Tiny Cartridge's favorite tiny cartridges of '09
We (JC and Eric) came up with a one-of-a-kind idea to close out 2009: a list of our favorite games from the last year. If you see any other site doing this, they totally ripped us off!
2009 was overloaded with rad DS games, and it was hard to narrow it down to just ten. Which means that if your favorite game isn’t on this list, that doesn’t necessarily mean it wasn’t rad!*

I often heard people say, ‘Mega Man can’t crouch,’ but we...
– Keiji Inafune, in commentary from the Mega Man Official Complete Works artbook. Protodude offers several more quotes from within the book, all of which just convince me further that I need to pick up a copy.

“Vampire Killer” from Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth. Now that the game is finally out in North America, we can get to important matters, like obsessing over its soundtrack. If you’d like to join in, you can download the music from the Castlevania Dungeon!
This “Vampire Killer” sounds a lot more like the X68000 version than the SNES Castlevania IV, Dracula...

Title music from the Robocop Game Boy game. While this original version sounds quite chiptuney (having more of a C64-type sound than the Data East-developed NES game), joeyclassic went and made a very chiptuney cover of it! Which I can’t embed here because it’s 12 megabytes!

Exquisite video tour of Meteor, the Japanese retro game culture shop we’ve featured previously for its annual “My Famicase Exhibition” art show.
This clip, shot by Katya “Kitsuney” Mokolo, doesn’t just provide glimpses of the Tokyo store’s 8-bit baubles, King of Games apparel, and antique consoles. It captures the full experience: the building’s...

“Dragoon” by Clean Tears. At the HG101 blog, Dai Jou Bu has been rounding up albums available on the US iTunes store that include vocals by Hatsune Miku and other Vocaloid synthesizers.
Apparently Sega used a lot of these artists in Hatsune Miku: Project Diva, which is pretty neat!

Pac-Man is a game where you wander aimlessly through a maze of dark, featureless...
– KevinCow shares a far-fetched but thought-provoking interpretation of Pac-Man as a survival horror game.
If I recall correctly, Namco Bandai is planning a special title for the yellow guy’s 30th anniversary in 2010, with Sonic the Hedgehog co-creator and former level designer Hirokazu...

A Boy and His Blob for $20 at Amazon →
For reasons I can’t understand, some people refuse to pay full price for games like A Boy and His Blob or Muramasa because of their 2D graphics. Totally ridiculous! Anyway, those people can finally pick up A Boy and His Blob, as Amazon has cut its price down to $19.99.
If you want the free shipping that comes with any orders over $25, you could also throw the Mistwalker-designed tactical...

A Tiny Christmas
Happy Holidays, Tiny Cartridge readers! We’ll be too busy spending time with our families to attend to the site, but we hope that you’re having a decent Christmas, that no one gives you a copy of Mega Man: Rush Marine (not sure how that would even be possible), and that if you try to commit suicide today, your attempt fails spectacularly.
Since we’re not here to entertain you,...

Cave Story releasing 'after the new year'
Not wanting its fans to make wild speculations on the Cave Story WiiWare remake’s release date, developer Nicalis disclosed that the highly anticipated title will likely appear on the Wii Shopping Channel “after the new year.” Those of you who pegged its release for next week have got to be feeling really stupid right now.
The studio outlined the remake’s new features:

St. Nicalis leaves coal in our X-Mas stockings
I predicted yesterday that this could be the week we finally receive Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth and the Cave Story remake, basing my prophecy on the absence of both titles in Nintendo’s 2010 schedule. As those of you who checked your WiiWare stockings this morning for a Christmas week present found out, however, neither title showed up! Sorry if I ruined Christmas for you.
Instead...

Q&A: Capy on creating Clash of Heroes, 2009's best...
Despite its low key status as the secret best RPG/puzzle game of the year, you might have heard about Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes, if not for its addictive battle system, pretty boy smiles, and inventive take on the puzzle/RPG formula, then for the acclaim it’s received from anyone who spent more than a minute with the DS title.
Both Boing Boing and Gamasutra honored it as one of...

Blip Festival starts tonight →
Blip Festival, the annual three-day chiptune festival that I’m not at, started tonight. As I type this, Leeni is performing (picture above tweeted by @blipfestival). If you’re not in New York City, or if you’re in one of the few non-Blip Fest areas of New York City, why not listen to some of the performers’ recordings?
Peter Swimm [via TCTD] put together this playlist of...
