Tiny Cartridge's 2010 game favorites

image

2010 is coming to an end, which means it’s time for us to link to a bunch of old stuff look back on the year and think about what we loved the most. It was a pretty great year not only for DS games (especially if you’re a fan of RPGs), but for weird junk related to video games! And that means it was a great year for Tiny Cartridge.

Besides, other video game sites have scaled back most of their updates today, so you might as well hang out with us and read a list of our favorite stuff from this year.

Game Center CX NYE live stream → justin.tv

image

To ring in the New Year, Game Center CX is holding a 12-hour live show that Google Translate tells me is “the collaboration of miracles”!

So far, the show has featured an acoustic performance of the theme song from The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido (unfortunately the original performance is offline) and a Japanese punk version of “Camptown Races”, so I’m inclined to believe that translation is sound.

I believe the show began four hours ago, but it’s still entertaining to watch whenever you jump in. Ray Barnholt (of course) posted a link to a Japanese live stream, so you, too, can celebrate the last day of 2010 with Arino!

Buy: Retro Game Challenge ($13.99!)

Import: Game Center CX 2

Best DSiWare/WiiWare/Virtual Console games, 2010 handheld releases

image

I meant to share these two links with you forever ago, but I kept getting distracted by Pokemon Spirit comics, Love Plus Christmas dates, and other easy posts that wrote themselves. Enjoy these stale articles!

  • JC wrote an excellent Holiday Buyer’s Guide for DSiWare, WiiWare, and Virtual Console titles at Joystiq. Christmas is already long behind us, barely visible in the horizon, but it’s still a great collection of quality releases on Nintendo’s download platforms. Also, if anyone gifted you Nintendo Points cards, here’s how to spend them!
  • And I published an obligatory Top 5 list for the year’s best DS and PSP releases at Gamasutra. I was happy to spotlight a couple games that most sites neglected to include in their own end-of-year lists.

Yay for people employing us.

Buy: Special Edition Red Nintendo DSi XL bundle, DSi XL (Blue, Burgundy, & Bronze), Standard DSi (White, Pink, Black, & Blue), Standard DSi Orange & Green bundles

A year of Tiny Cartridge favorites

image

If we had to sum up the year in a single post — wait, that’s exactly what we have to do in this post. So, uh, rather than explain how we’d collect our favorite Tiny Cartridge 2010 moments, we’ll just share that collection with you.

To read about our favorite video games from the past year, make sure to hit up this post. For links to haunted games, anti-piracy stories, our favorite chiptunes, and a lewd PictoChat exchange, jump past the post break:

Super Robot Wars J translation released

image

Did you know that every time a Super Robot Wars translation patch is completed, a Gundam gets its Wing? It’s true, just like all the other lies that grace this page.

Romhacking Aerie, which also helped translate Tales of Innocence in June, has released an English patch for Super Robot Wars J, which was never going to come out in the States for a number of reasons:

  • It released in Japan way back in 2005, which seems like a century ago in internet/gaming years
  • It’s a GBA title — you might have noticed that publishers haven’t localized many of these lately
  • All the licenses would be a nightmare to negotiate for anyone who’d try to release it in the States

'Towel Slappin' Pro Jumper' rated for DSiWare → esrb.org

Furo Jump!!: Guilty Gear Gaiden!? is a Japanese DSiWare title by Arc System Works, tenuously tied to Guilty Gear 2 by starring Chimaki, a pillow thing who appears as a secret item in GG. This game, however, isn’t about beating up on bishonen with ’80s metal band names, instead focusing on Chimaki’s trip from hot spring to hot spring, slapping animals with towels.

And now it’s coming to North America! For some reason (That reason is likely “Aksys localizes everything Arc System Works makes”)! According to the ESRB, the American version is called Towel-Slappin’ Pro-Jumper and includes levels whose names ”are based on innuendo and puns (e.g. Nude York, Rome Laid Bare, and Full-Frontal Fuji).” Also of note, the ESRB’s content description: “one leaflet contains text that reads, ‘For help with … un-natural male enhancement.’”

A pillow spinning around on a bar of soap, snapping a towel at animals in hot springs. That sounds like an easy 500 DSi Points’ worth, even if you don’t factor in the extra dick-joke value.

Buy: Special Edition Red Nintendo DSi XL bundle, DSi XL (Blue, Burgundy, & Bronze), Standard DSi (White, Pink, Black, & Blue), Standard DSi Orange & Green bundles

MegaStopwatch: Get Equipped with DS homebrew → nintendomax.com

Here’s a goofy, totally unnecessary, but amusing homebrew DS app: MegaStopwatch, the Mega Man-themed stopwatch from Thungbard.

It includes various timing-related functions, including saving times for up to 20 participants in a race, an egg timer, and a metronome, all represented in the menu by altered Mega Man bosses. It also lets you assign start/stop functions to any button on the DS, which is nice.

Nintendo 3DS system, games preorders

image

Starting today, GameStop is accepting preorders for the Nintendo 3DS — I believe most stores require a $50 deposit, though some report that several shops are taking $25. The retailer should contact you once final pricing and colors for the system in North America are announced, likely following the January 19th press event.

I personally prefer to buy my games/consoles elsewhere, so I’ll wait for other shops to begin taking reservations, like Best Buy, Amazon, or Toys R’ Us.

Also, Amazon is taking preorders for several Nintendo 3DS titles, mostly Konami games, anticipating prices of $34.99 to $39.99 (not the final prices, of course):

  • Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3DS
  • Contra 3DS
  • Nintendogs + Cats
  • Frogger 3DS
  • Winning Eleven 3DS
  • Baseball 3DS (Pro Baseball Spirit Series?)

Legend of Zelda prototype found → tcrf.net

image

This is a pretty damn amazing find on the part of the TCRF/Lost Levellers who made it happen: a prototype version of the Famicom Disk System release of The Legend of Zelda has been found and ripped!

The changes mostly involve number of enemies (way more enemies were added to almost every dungeon room in the final release), though there are slight differences in room layouts, music and sound effect changes, and tweaks in gameplay (like the Wizzrobes’ beams hurting less, and the screen not pausing when you use a candle). You can’t even hit the old man!

I say this a lot, but given that I can now download and play a version of my favorite Zelda that I’ve never seen before, it’s a Christmas miracle.

Buy: The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, Phantom Hourglass, and more

Christmas with Nene, Rinko, and Manaka

image

Since it’s Christmas Eve and we figured you’d have to be in a pretty lonely state to spend your night at our site, we brought in three virtual ladies to keep you company: Nene Anegasaki, Rinko Kobayakawa, and Manaka Takane from Konami’s virtual girlfriend series Love Plus!

As you can see in the above image, Japanese players with a copy of Love Plus+ are treated to some holiday-themed bits right now. Even if you haven’t imported the game, though, you can still enjoy some Christmas Love Plussing with all the photos we’ve collected after the break.
