Photos tour of Japan’s wonderful Meteor shop. Yes, we have featured a more comprehensive video tour of the Famicom/music/video culture shop in Tokyo’s Kichijoji neighborhood before, but that one wasn’t shot by me, so there.
This tiny store is stuffed with CDs, books, Famicom carts (arranged beautifully, by color!) and t-shirts by The King of Games and Polygraph. It’s also densely decorated with knitted mobiles and trinkets from the collection of owner/Fami-mode organizer Satoshi Sakagami. In the spring, it’s home to the Famicase exhibition.
After asking Sakagami-san if it was okay to take so many pictures (Mary and I took so many pictures), we had a really nice conversation. He had visited our site before! He offered to send me info about next year’s Famicase, and agreed to come out from behind the counter and take a picture. Yes, we noted the similarity in our attire.
When I was checking out with my purchases, Mary noticed the cool Mario tape he used to seal my shopping bag. He explained that it came packaged with Pepsi bottles (in 2005). He assumed we had the same kind of promotion in the US, and then threw a roll into my bag when I explained that Pepsi is not that cool here.
Meteor is the coolest place ever. If not for the distant location, I’d hang out here all the time, which would be a problem for Sakagami-san, because he wouldn’t have room for a second customer. On that note, I’d like to thank him for being so hospitable to us!
