

Game Center CX Virtual Console special on Volfied, a Taito game that looks like a shmup, but is actually a Qix sequel. Arino’s challenge is to enclose 99.9% of a level — something that is made challenging not only by the enemies, but by the fact that a score of 75% or more automatically ends the level.
At one point, Arino employs a strategy that I’d never thought of for Qix (I don’t mind revealing the secret that I’m terrible at Qix): building a tower in the middle of the screen. In part 2 (below), that strategy is expanded into a specific maneuver designed to trap the boss in the smallest possible area.
