To celebrate the Independence Day weekend, Sega announced that the iPhone version of Columns Deluxe has been marked down to the low, low price of free. Who dares say that the iPhone is too expensive when you can occasionally download an old game for free? Two old games, in this case, as Columns Deluxe includes Puyo Puyo.

Once in college, I introduced a next-door neighbor to Columns, either on the Genesis or in the Dreamcast’s Sega Smash Pack. He’d never played it before, but his very first game went on for something like six hours, with a pause-break for dinner. I don’t know if he just had a natural talent for Columns or if he went into some kind of involuntary gem-shuffling fugue state.
