Cave Story releasing ‘after the new year’

Not wanting its fans to make wild speculations on the Cave Story WiiWare remake’s release date, developer Nicalis disclosed that the highly anticipated title will likely appear on the Wii Shopping Channel “after the new year.” Those of you who pegged its release for next week have got to be feeling really stupid right now.

The studio outlined the remake’s new features:

  • Three save files
  • New graphics and music
  • Original graphics and music
  • Classic Controller support (suggested)
  • 60 frames per second vs the PC version’s 50
  • A lot of DLC planned (Nicalis is taking requests)
  • Translated script with the blessing and support of original developer Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya
  • Three game modes (easy, normal and hard)

In Easy mode, the protagonist, whom Nicalis is referring to as “Mister Traveler”, takes half damage and is dressed in a yellow outfit. Normal mode should remain mostly the same as the PC version. In Hard Mode, players have to make it through with 3HP and no missiles, their sprite now sporting blonde hair and a blue outfit.

In the spirit of the holiday season, Nicalis also put out two Christmas-themed remixes of Cave Story songs (a third is slated to appear tomorrow), composed by Dustin “k-wik” Kulwicki, a name fans might recognize from the Cave Story Remix Project. You can listen to them here.
