Shin Megami Tensei IV's DLC outfits are like cosplay ⊟
The last batch of downloadable content for Shin Megami Tensei IV released this week, which I took as an opportunity to look through some of the gear you can purchase in the game. They’re all pretty odd/neat, like the gold Traje de Luces gear inspired by Spanish bullfighters and shown above (middle) — you can get that in the latest Radiant Equipment set of challenges.
A while back, I asked the game’s stylish art director Masayuki Doi how he picked which costumes are offered in the standard game or as DLC:
"All the costumes that are in the game itself, they were specifically designed to match the world, the characters, whether it be more European style, Eastern Kingdom of Mikado, or elsewhere the protagonist travels to. I made sure all these designs are functional, something that people actually wear with a purpose.
On the other hand, for the DLC costumes, I picked the ones that are more like cosplay, something that looks cool but may not actually make sense, [something that might not have] a real function or real world usage.”
Oh, and just as a PSA: the Fire Emblem: Awakening + SMTIV eShop promotion ends tomorrow, so make sure you register those games with Club Nintendo if you want to get that $30 eShop credit to spend later!
