Tiny Preview: Ocarina of Time 3D

As mentioned on Twitter earlier (follow us!), I spent a few hours with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D recently, and so far it’s an enjoyable remake.

Having abandoned consoles for PC gaming in the mid-90s, I missed the PS1/N64 generation and never experienced the original, so I can play this sans rose-tinted glasses or Water Temple grudges. Since a few readers asked about my limited hands-on time with Ocarina of Time 3D, I whipped up some brief impressions.

Three details that are fab:

  1. Intuitive inventory. From what I hear, swapping items was a pain in the original, but I experienced none of that! Mapping everything to different buttons or on the touchscreen made everything a breeze.
  2. Super Guide-style hint system. So, uh, when I first explored Kokiri Forest, I couldn’t figure out where to procure a sword. But then I came across a mysterious stone that took me through a quick vision/dream sequence pointing me in the right direction. Very helpful and seamlessly implemented!
  3. Condensed instruction manual that isn’t like a booklet at all. It’s a 22”x9” foldable sheet with a visual guide for the controls/UI, adventuring hints, and tips on starting/saving.

Two details that are butt:

  1. No rupees on the inside cover like the European version (might be limited to their preorder copies).
  2. Quickly jumping out and back into the first-person perspective doesn’t return you to the angle you were aiming the camera/slingshot. It’s a minor annoyance, but I ended up twisting into weird positions while trying to aim with the gyroscope.

Something I noticed while playing, at least in these first few hours, is that Ocarina of Time 3D doesn’t feel like a 12-year-old game, or look like a last-generation portable title — a nice plus for the very few people like me who never enjoyed the original!
