Long before iOS apps, or even DS “non-games,” the Infogenius series cornered the then-nonexistent market for productivity software on handheld game consoles. Seen above is Spell Checker and Calculator, but Frommer’s Travel Guide, Spanish Translator, French Translator, and Personal Organizer and Phone Book were also sold in 1991.

“The most remarkable InfoGenius cart is the Personal Organizer,” according to a ubiquitous column by Chip and Jonathan Carter (seriously, I’ve found it in like five different newspapers). “Simple Game Boy controls let you store names, addresses and phone numbers. You can keep track of appointments and events with the day planner and find dates through the year 2000 with a calendar.”
