eShop sale for The Denpa Men

This week’s list of 3DS downloadable releases in the U.S. is weak, but there’s a decent sale for Genius Sonority’s whimsical RPG The Denpa Men that cuts its price from $9.99 to $7.99. Now’s a great time to pick it up if you haven’t yet, as its sequel releases in a week and you can carry over your hero’s data.

Meanwhile Wii U’s Virtual Console is holding a buy 2 Kirby games get 1 free sale, and Europe’s 3DS eShop gets a demo for Project X Zone. And on the retail side, Amazon is still selling New Super Mario Bros. 2, Fire Emblem: Awakening, Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D for $29.99 each.

This custom Twin Famicom looks sharp

I’ll typically take matte surfaces over gloss for my consoles all day errday, but this commissioned paintjob by Zoki64 is foine.

Type of system that turns heads as it walks by, a glance and a smile thrown over her shoulder when she catches you gawking. Type of system you bring over to show off to your friends, only to have them talk behind your back about how she’s way out of your league and comment, “I’m not even sure what she’s doing with him/her.”

Type of system next-gen consoles hide their men/women from, knowing she could steal away their partners with minimal effort, on some ol’ Jolene shit. Like, damn, custom Twin Famicom, don’t do’em like that. Don’t break Xbone’s heart after all it’s gone through to find happiness, just because you can.

Altered Beast welcomed to its doom the 3DS

Hey, it’s another classic from Sega enhanced and thrown onto the eShop — Altered Beast! The game will add a lot of the features we saw in 3D Sonic the Hedgehog, like a CRT emulation mode, button remapping, options to play JP/Western versions, depth and zoom 3D options, etc.

Sega will put out 3D Altered Beast next week to Japan. There’s no word about a Western release, but the publisher has announced that it’s bringing 3D Space Harrier to Europe, so maybe the rest of the series is on the way too.

Spelunker on Wii U VC

Here’s the big news everyone’s going to be talking about on Twitter today: the NES version of Spelunker is being released on Wii U Virtual Console. Not Spelunker HD, as released on the PlayStation Network, but Spelunker One.

This is truly the next generation of ways to play crazy hard platformers from 1985. And unlike some other world-changing video game news announcements, we have a firm release date and price point: May 30 for $4.99. You can also yell at it. Not to change your TV inputs or anything, but just out of rage.

Freedom Wars for PS Vita

After teasing this as “Panopticon” for the past two weeks, Sony has revealed this original property as Freedom Wars, a 2014 game that looks pretty interesting despite its boring title.

Dubbed a “recovery multiplayer action” game, Freedom Wars looks like more than just another urban/dystopian Monster Hunter clone based on this NeoGAF-translated press release:

“The player is a criminal in a post-apocalyptic near future, sentenced to a million years of hard labor, fighting for his freedom. By completing missions where you rescue civilians and allies who have been captured by huge enemies known as Abductors, you can reduce your sentence. The game supports a maximum of 8 players at a time in both co-op and competitive modes, and supports Adhoc and Wi-Fi Online functions so players all over the country can play together. The game will also support the GPS and Near capabilities of the PS Vita to enhance the gameplay experience.”

A month from now, you’ll be able to buy cult Game Boy Color platformer Shantae — the first original property from WayForward, and the first release that got people to really start noticing the studio — on 3DS’s Virtual Console in North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.

WayForward is putting out so much on the 3DS this year: this release, Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse, Mighty Switch Force! 2, Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon Because I DON’T KNOW!, and Regular Show: Mordecai and Rigby In 8-Bit Land. I wouldn’t be surprised if we heard more announcements for 2013 either.

Great, even Nintendo is exploiting crowdfunding now

I’m sick of hearing about big publishers taking advantage of services like Kickstarter, which is supposed to be for indies, or at least people who would have trouble raising money for their projects themselves otherwise.

And Wario is the last person I’d give money to. Hasn’t he already raked in millions from his WarioWare series? Plus he’s known for running scams, so I don’t trust this Crowdfarter site he just launched at all. His business plan sounds fishy, too — I’m not sure how he expects to make cash by asking people to tweet or like his site.

The rewards don’t even sound that great!:

At 50 KAJILLION coins, you will receive my voice as a ringtone for your too-cool-for-school phone. HOW AWESOME IS THAT?

If I help him make 50 Kajillion coins, the least I’d expect is a DRM-free copy of Game & Wario, a cameo or credit in the game, and a downloadable soundtrack. This is just straight-up greed and an abuse of his fans’ good will. It’s official, Wario now is worse than Penny Arcade.

Yakuza Direct

I was watching the US Nintendo Direct yesterday, so I missed this significant development in Nintendo Direct Gesture Semiotics over in the Japanese stream, with Satoru Iwata and Sega CCO Toshihiro Nagoshi revealing the Yakuza-themed Ring Flash Direct. GIF via HN3DS, because I tried and failed to make one of my own. :(

It’s to signify the announcement of the Yakuza 1&2 HD Collection coming to Wii U, an announcement that somehow manages to be both totally minor and totally desperate. Like, Yakuza’s a big deal in Japan, but these are old games, and even the HD versions came out on PS3 back in December…

The good news is that since Nintendo of America is also desperate for Wii U games, maybe we’ll get the collection over here! Both have been translated, after all (and Yakuza 1 fully localized with English voices).

I love the Yakuza games. Part RPG, part soap opera, part tourism, part brawler, part absolute nonsense…

Animal Crossing: New Leaf’s fortune teller

Katrina set up her tent in my town the other day and offered to tell me my fortune for a nominal fee. Now, I dont usually believe in all this astronomy nonsense or what have you, but I’m telling you, something weird happened there. I was floating in space for a second, and I saw an owl flying backwards, but there was no owl. And a faraway voice sang:

come back in my heart
so dark
so dark

I ran home and slipped into some hot pants. Also made sure my New Leaf character wore shorts that day.

Though you’ll need to have reached The Hall of Darkness (6th Maze) to access the quest, if you’re not at that point yet, you’ll have this whole weekend to fight your way there! :oP

Nintendo Direct’s 3DS highlights

There was a minimal amount of 3DS news in this morning’s Nintendo Direct (you could say the same about interesting Wii U announcements), but I was happy to hear a couple minor but nice items about the eShop.

First, The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons will sell for only $4.99 each during its first three weeks on the storefront (starting May 30). After that, the Game Boy Color releases will go for $5.99 each.

And there’s over a dozen more Game Gear titles coming to 3DS Virtual Console:

Ace Attorney 5 demo

Just like it has for every Ace Attorney game, Capcom has put together a web demo of Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies. And just like I have for every Ace Attorney game, I’m going to try to play this demo in Japanese because I CANNOT WAIT.

My Japanese is awful. This is a game that relies entirely on wordplay and careful reading. Have fun!
