DataPort chip show in Portland tomorrow →

Portland, the small Oregonian hamlet made famous by IFC comedy series Portlandia, will host a chiptune show you won’t want to miss if you’re anywhere near the suburb.

Starting around 8 at the Backspace Cafe, DataPort 3 will feature live performances by out-of-towners Bud Melvin (from New Mexico) and Covox (travelling all the way from Sweden!). P-Town native Mechlo will also rock a set.

You can RSVP and find out more info on this Facebook event page. It’s all ages, so you really don’t have an excuse not to go! I mean, come on, it’s Portland. It’s not like there’s going to be anything else going on.

[Update: And if you can’t make it, the show will be livestreamed tomorrow night starting at 8PM PST]

Reformat the Planet, part 1 of 7. If you haven’t taken the time to watch 2 Player Productions’ brilliant chiptune/Blip Festival documentary, now you have no excuse*: 2PP just uploaded it to YouTube, loaded with new annotations and reportedly hilarious automatic captions.

If you like seeing it in a little window, you might like seeing it on your TV even better! In which case, you can buy it from 2PP’s IndieBlitz store, Fangamer (with lots of available extras) or Amazon.

Reformat the Planet streaming on Hulu →

We gave a few readers the opportunity to watch 2 Player Productions’ chiptune documentary Reformat the Planet for free in our birthday contest. If you didn’t happen to win that, you now have a second chance to check it out — and you don’t have to do anything more complicated than clicking on a link. (Well, you have to live in the US, which would be a lot of work for some of you.)

You can watch the documentary right now on Hulu! I guess it got reformatted itself. It’s only available on computers, and not Hulu Plus-enabled TVs or phones or whatever. And, of course, you don’t get any of the amazing extras that you would get from purchasing it from Fangamer. But it is the movie, for free, on your computer. However you choose to watch it, you should watch it!

Reformat the Planet available from Amazon and other stores in December →

In the event you want to buy Reformat the Planet, 2 Player Productions’ awesome NYC chiptune/Blip Festival documentary, but don’t want to get it from Fangamer and get cool t-shirts and buttons and stuff, well, you can preorder it now from Amazon, to ship out December 7. That’s when the DVD set will be released to the wider world of retail — it was released exclusively through Fangamer in August. It was also a component of most of the prizes in our unbelievable contest.

While I’m on the subject of 2PP DVDs you should own, the DVD set of Penny Arcade: The Series, Season 1 is available from Penny Arcade’s shop. I watched every episode of the web show as soon as I could, and this set has all of that first season, plus tons of extras.

Box of collectible Dragon Quest figures. We’re giving away a grip of these toys to our “Birthday Contest of Forever” winners. I was tempted to check if any of these packages contained a Metal Slime that I could keep for myself, but opening the boxes kind of ruins them, which would be a dick move for real. So, no Metal Slime for me!

For those wondering when we’ll announce the winners, well, JC has been busy in Tokyo for the past couple of weeks, so we haven’t had time to discuss our favorites. I can tell you there are more awesome entries than we have prizes to give out, unfortunately — we didn’t expect people to appreciate our site as much as they apparently do.

We intend to start revealing the winners early this week, but instead of announcing them all at once, we’re going to torture you by featuring one exceptional submission at a time. That way, we can give our contestants’ work the attention they deserve, which they wouldn’t get if we crammed them into a single gallery post.

Long live Tiny! (and Dragon Quest toys!)

Reminder: Birthday Contest of Forever →

We don’t want you to miss out on an opportunity to win tons of Reformat the Planet merchandise, import Nintendo DS games (Love Plus and Maestro!), collectible Dragon Quest figures, and a bunch of other tchotchkes, so here’s a reminder about our Tiny Cartridge birthday contest!

Again, if you want to win free stuff, just send us something creative featuring or inspired by our mascot, Tiny, to the following email address: contest at tinycartridge dot derp (replace “derp” with com, of course).

We’ve already received some Tiny fanart and even fan fiction — to be honest, we only have a few submissions so far, so if you enter anything cool, it’s likely you’ll win one of our major prizes. Just make sure to send something in by September 12, 11:59 PM EST!

Visit our friends at PAX!

If you’re spending the weekend at the Penny Arcade Expo (thanks for making some time to check our site, btw!), please make sure you visit to our comrades at the event. And if you’ve cash to spare, please give them your monies, too.

  • 2 Player Productions (Reformat the Planet), video game culture shop Attract Mode, Letters To An Absent Father artist Mare Odomo, EXP zine creator Cory Schmitz, and other talented folks are all sharing a booth, selling hella merchandise. You won’t find a nicer group of dudes (and dudettes) at PAX. Unfortunately, I’ve no idea where that booth is!
  • Fangamer will also have lots of video game apparel and other goods to sell. Apparently, our friend Fort90 was even able to score a Tiny Cartridge pin (pictured) at the booth! We were surprised by the whole thing, too! You can visit them at booth #3838, which is near Square Enix’s huge setup on the fourth floor.

Disclaimer: We are currently running a contest with 2PP and Fangamer that is the fucking bees’ knees. We’re giving away Reformat the Planet DVDs, shirts, import DS games, Dragon Quest figures, and more. If you miss it, you’re basically a terrible person.

TC x RTP: Birthday Contest Of The Forever

Since no one bothered to throw us a birthday party last week (not that we got our hopes up for one; it’s just that, you know, we thought maybe a store-bought cake or something… forget it. it’s not a big deal or anything.), we’re holding our own, and we’re buying your friendship giving away free stuff to make sure people show up.

We’ve partnered with Fangamer and 2 Player Productions to give away an insane amount of Reformat the Planet merchandise (DVDs, shirts, etc). We’re also throwing in junk that Tiny Cartridge fans are sure to love, like import games, esoteric trinkets, and more!

Reformat the Planet DVD’s wicked cover (click for a larger version), designed by Fangamer and now available as a wallpaper for your desktop or your iPhone.

I really love this image — it reminds me of that raw 16-bit pixelart feel Danger tried to capture in his 09/17 2007 teaser videos. As mentioned last night, Fangamer and 2 Player Productions are selling a poster for this artwork, but you can only buy one with Reformat Combo Packs or Blip Bundles, both of which include a Bit Boy Shirt and the excellent Reformat the Planet DVD set.
