DS/3DS Release Dates & Sales // Tiny Cartridge Stickers For Your Games!
3D screenshots come to eShop →

It seems like an obvious thing to do, but it wasn’t always the case that sample screens for 3DS games on the eShop were in 3D. Starting with Mario Kart 7, however, they are (as 3DSTribe reports), allowing you an accurate image of what the game looks like. We’re still waiting on demos, but this is a nice, if dainty, step toward letting us sample stuff.

For those of you who don’t spend much time on the eShop (most people), yes, you can browse screenshots of upcoming retail games on there.

Azito 3D’s superb boxart replicates Japan’s mid-century kaiju film posters (click for a larger image).

If I was in charge of creating a 3DS game about building and defending a secret base against giant monsters, this is exactly the cover I’d have in mind for the project.

The box is so good, but I know better than to expect the cover’s quality to extend to the actual game. If that were the case, Frogger 3DS would be the swankiest thing ever.

Preorder: Nintendo 3DS ($169.99 on August 12!)

Netflix on 3DS: Impressions

The free Netflix app is now out on the 3DS’s eShop, so if you have a subscription to the service, download it to start streaming movies and TV shows today (in 2D).

For some reason, many people thought the app would allow you to watch movies in stereoscopic 3D, but I don’t believe that was ever announced — really, it wasn’t something I was clamoring for anyway, as just streaming 2D films on a 3DS is sweet enough for me.

Nintendo, though, let it slip today that “users will soon have access to an additional library of select movies that can be viewed in 3D without the need for special glasses”. So, there’s that for those of you who want it. [Update: Nintendo claimed it was just talking about its ‘short-form video service, so… the 3D movie thing isn’t happening.]

Anyway, some quick impressions on the app!

Virtual Boy wigglepics! On the heels of that life-changing Pizza 3D² photo, some VideoMan fellow uploaded a set of stereoscopic 3D screenshots from Virtual Boy games.

Through a bit of wizardry, I managed to copy the MPO files to my SD card and load them on my 3DS, allowing me to see the 3D effects of these old games on the modern portable. I don’t know what it is, but I felt a headache immediately coming on after looking at them for a few seconds (I don’t have this problem with 3DS games).

The Virtual Boy’s still got it!

“You never hear people say, ‘The HD visuals looked great but didn’t add to the gameplay, and so are nothing more then a gimmick.’

3D, like HD graphics or surround sound, improves the presentation of the game and helps with immersion. There’s nothing wrong with that. Why do some act like it needs to do more in order to be considered worthwhile?”

Astute observation from NeoGAF forumer Padlock on the complaints from journalists and gamers that 3D effects don’t add much to the gameplay in the 3DS’ launch titles.

Curiously, for all the criticisms about Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars having “last handheld generation graphics” and being a “rushed 3DS port”, of the launch titles I’ve played, this unassuming strategy title has the best implementation of subtle 3D effects I’ve seen.

Aside from the immersive “living board game” effect, the game does simple stuff like layering menu elements or those static images of talking heads during RPG-style conversations (e.g. person talking is in the foreground).

Basically, what I am trying to say here is that you should be playing Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars.

Steel Diver reminding me to take a break after an extended play session. Nintendo doesn’t want your eyes spontaneously combusting from staring at the 3D screen too long — though this message popped up while I was playing with the stereoscopic 3D effects turned off.

Wouldn’t it be great if all 3DS titles had essentially the same warning message (they don’t) except with that last bit changed to make it appropriate to your game character? Like “Don’t forget to take a break, soldier!” in Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars, or “Take a break, dino-butt!” in Bust-a-Move Universe, or “Get outta here, pedo!” in the inevitable Doki Doki Majo Shinpan 3DS.

Anyway, if you have any questions about Steel Diver, other 3DS games, or the hardware itself, ask away!

“Touchable” chibi Love Plus girls. A group of students showed a demo for “RePro 3D” at the Digital Contents Expo, which uses a sensor on the player’s finger to provide realistic touch feedback for virtual objects — including the girls here, with whom contact apparently created a “biting”-strength feedback. So maybe tune it down a bit, Tokyo University and Keio University grad students.

I am consciously choosing not to think about the inspiration for this demo. I do love the “real” objects on the 3D display. It reminds me of the random shapes on those Sega 3D arcade games.

Holographic girl pops out of a DS, by Ao Usagi. This isn’t an accurate representation of the 3DS, what with this actually being a DS Lite and the girl appearing over the bottom screen (the top screen of the system will have the 3D display), but I’m posting it here anyway because of the hilarious comment I read about the image at Danbooru: “Oh man… 3D armpits.”

This also gives me a chance to share the rumored 3DS specs IGN gathered from an anonymous source:

  • two 266MHz ARM11 CPUs (the same CPUs featured in the Zune HD, several Android smartphones, and older models of the iPhone/iPod Touch)
  • 133MHz GPU (DMP’s PICA200)
  • 4MBs of dedicated VRAM
  • 64MBs of RAM
  • 1.5GBs of flash storage (256MB in the DSi)

IGN says that “numerous developers” working with the hardware are claiming the 3DS’s graphical capabilities are comparable to the Xbox 360 and PS3, which I don’t buy — I’m sure it looks nice, but real talk, guys. Real talk.

Commercial for the SegaScope 3-D glasses. I actually had a pair of these giant Sega Master System-attached shades, with which I happily played Zaxxon 3-D, secretly not getting the appeal of the whole 3D thing.

It was only later that I learned that my lazy eye prevented me from ever enjoying stereoscopic visual effects.

Nintendo 3DS mock-ups/concepts, redux

Now that Nintendo has revealed its hardware design (or at least a prototype of it) for the Nintendo 3DS, the demand for fan-made system mock-ups with dual analog control schemes and sliding screen mechanisms has died down.

But since the 3D effects the handheld promises are difficult to capture and communicate in screenshots or videos — Nintendo’s promo trailer relied heavily on CG to convey the system’s 3D-ness — several illustrators have posted artwork for how they imagine images popping out of the 3DS.

If we’re to believe Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime’s recent prediction that the portable won’t hit the States until some time next year, we will have to wait around six to nine months before we can try out out the 3DS ourselves. So, these concept artworks/mock-ups collected here are the closest we’ll come to picturing the portable’s 3D effects until then (unless you don’t mind crossing your eyes at stereoscopic images).

Nintendo 3DS to feature new anti-piracy measures, toggle option for 3D

Speaking with Forbes earlier today, Nintendo CEO and president Satoru Iwata disclosed that the upcoming Nintendo 3DS model will introduce new anti-piracy measures designed to prevent gamers from playing downloaded games on flashcarts.

Nintendo tried something similar when it launched the DSi in 2008, but flashcart manufacturers found a way to circumvent those protections within a couple months. Then the company released a 1.4 firmware update last July again blocking flashcarts, but pirates developed a workaround for that in under a week.
