“The new Game Boy Pocket. Seriously distracting.”

Nintendo’s advertising agency Leo Burnett ran this mature-targeted Game Boy Pocket ad in Loaded, FHM, and Viz, reasoning that it fit those UK magazines’ audiences.

Several readers complained, however, and said the girl looked terrified and held against her will — Nintendo wanted to convey her frustration over her partner ignoring their bedroom bondage activities to play Tetris.

The Advertising Standards Authority asked Nintendo to remove the ads from future issues, and described the company as irresponsible for implying the restrained woman was “subjugated and humiliated”. Isn’t that what sadomasochism is about?

Japanese F1 Race ad. It doesn’t make me want to buy a Game Boy Racing game, so much as it makes me want to buy a tiny race car costume thing.

Inside-Games rounded up a bunch of vintage Japanese Game Boy ads like this in celebration of the console’s 20th anniversary. There are ads for Zelda, Mario Land, Tetris (2), the Game Boy Camera, Kirby, Pokemon, and other favorites.

Sonny Chiba is not impressed with your handheld game, Tomy. Blip may have a cool display, but it’s nothing more than the worst Pong implementation I’ve ever seen. Each paddle only has three possible positions, controlled by the buttons on either side of the screen.

Well, okay, Blip isn’t a great Pong, but it is novel — the ball is actually an LED light that moves around mechanically. It’s clearly not enough for The Street Fighter.

I think it’s important for you to understand what I went through when I came upon this video, for, uh… science, or the good of humanity, or whatever reason will make you happiest.

  1. I came upon this, which stated: Nintendo DS game Girls Aloud DS.
  2. I suffered a minor heart attack, stroke, and aneurysm at the thought of a(nother) game for some pop group.
  3. I watched the video. Why, God? Why do you give me these urges?
  4. I was relieved to find that it was just a commercial for the system and not a Girls Aloud game.
  5. I realized I actually knew who Girls Aloud were and decided I should probably punish myself thoroughly, preferably with hot irons or some similarly horrendous method of torture.
