DS/3DS Release Dates & Sales // Tiny Cartridge Stickers For Your Games!

Sharp Twin Famicom commercial. This video becomes continually more perfect as it approaches the end of its 15-second runtime. Laser Famicom! Stop-motion flying cartridges and disks! Semi-casual space uniform kid! And then… surprise Meijin!

Mega Man 10 infiltrates Inside-Games →

As it did for the release of Mega Man 9, Japanese gaming site Inside-Games has updated with a full Mega Man 10 makeover. Not only do you get to stare at those adorable Mega Man faces next to every icon, there’s also a pop-up music player at the top of the page, and more pithy little slogans to read upon every refresh! Examples include “It’s timing! Timing!”, “Mega Man 10 in 2010!”, and “I’ll meet you all on three different platforms!”

I’d like these full-site advertising makeovers a lot more if they all had this much care put into them. And if they were all about Mega Man.

Rescue: The Embassy Mission ad, scanned by national treasure Frank Cifaldi for a Retronauts feature. Publisher Kemco-Seika tried to kid-friendly it up by making the focal point a real, neon-clad kid carrying his homework — but the effort kind of falls flat when you notice the terrorist trying to shoot down his helicopter and thus murder him.

A collection of Famicom game commercials. YouTube user Rad1kus pulled these launch-era commercials from the Famicom 20th Anniversary Commemoration DVD.

I love how straightforward they all are! Sort of infomercial-ish in their presentation. That is, until the end, when Nintendo takes us into the future, complete with super-clean cities and Game Police!

Mega Man Battle & Chase ad. I didn’t realize just how close the Mega Man kart racing game was to being released in North America. It finally came out in 2006 as part of the Mega Man X Collection, which kind of doesn’t make sense given that it isn’t a Mega Man X game.

Mockup Mega Man 9 magazine ad, by NeoGAFfer “Beardz”. There’s a whole thread of fake ads for the game, and some of them are pretty good! A few actually nail the “print ad” feel, and there’s even one that accurately imitates vintage Capcom magazine advertising. It’s totally worth the browse.

I guess I like posting about things related to Mega Man 9 marketing today.

“Marketing is shaped by what’s appropriate for a particular game. While it might seem to some that games that appeal to the expanded audience get more attention, that’s probably because the expanded audience has a steeper learning curve.

Core gamers and their friends are tuned into the gaming news and blog sites, so they already know a lot of what’s going on.”

Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime in an interview with GameDaily, confirming something I’ve long suspected: we are Nintendo’s advertising force among gamers.
