Zombie Panic-related game coming to 3DS

Akaoni Studio — the Spanish developer that broke off the Little Red Riding Hood’s Zombie BBQ team and went on to create Zombie Panic in Wonderland — recently revealed that it has a 3DS project in the works.

So far, all we know is that the 3DS title will be related to Zombie Panic, the on-rails shooter Akaoni released to WiiWare last year. Perhaps it’s a port? A sequel? Or something totally different but with the same characters/world? Considering Zombie Panic’s mixed reviews, I’m hoping for something totally new.

Don’t forget that you can now download Zombie BBQ, which is a solid shoot’em up, on DSiWare/eShop.

Zombie Panic in Wonderland’s Dorothy by Eva Lara Ruiz (click for a larger image). Spanish studio Akaoni posted several great fan tributes to its WiiWare third-person shooter, including this image of Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz posing with a submachine gun.

Ikari Studio, which produced the character art for Little Red Riding Hood’s Zombie BBQ, the spiritual predecessor to Zombie Panic, also created three illustrations for Snow White (NSFW!) and Dorothy, both of whom are playable characters in the WiiWare game.

If you’re in Europe, by the way, you can now download a single-stage Zombie Panic demo for free on WiiWare!

Unintentional Zombie Panic in Wonderland cosplay, modeled by Deanne Marsh and shot by Sito Alvina (click for a larger image). I was tempted to also call this cosplay for Little Red Riding Hood’s Zombie BBQ, as both games feature gun-toting versions of the fairy tale character, but Red’s outfit in Zombie BBQ’s is much more immodest than the one in this photo.

[Update: As several commenters pointed out, this is actually cosplay for Darkstalkers’s Baby Bonnie Hood!]

So, Zombie Panic in Wonderland released in Japan last month and hits Europe later this month; how much longer before this on-rails shooter comes to North America?

New Zombie Panic in Wonderland characters, wallpapers. Last I heard, the playable fairy tale characters for this WiiWare shooter includes Snow White, Momotaro, and Dorothy from Wizard of Oz. These new wallpapers, though, reveal alternate costumes for Snow and Momo, as well as two other notable fables: Little Red Riding Hood and (I think) Alice from Lewis Carroll’s famous novel.

Some thoughts on the two new characters:

  • Alice: Her inclusion as a playable character makes sense considering the game’s title, but I’m surprised Akaoni hasn’t promoted her presence, what with the attention Tim Burton’s new Alice in Wonderland movie has given the character recently. Also, the belt of potions is a great detail!
  • Red: Wow, she looks so different from the well-proportioned heroine we saw in Little Red Riding Hood’s Zombie BBQ (this game’s spiritual predecessor). I’m surprised Akaoni is revisiting this character! I love the machine gun hidden in her basket and the stuffed wolf toy, too.

This released on Japan’s WiiWare today! I hope we’ll see it in North America soon; it looks like a fun on-rails shooter, and I really like the character designs.

Zombie Panic In Wonderland’s playable characters, with Red from Little Red Riding Hood’s Zombie BBQ thrown in for comparison. For those who haven’t followed the Zombie saga, Akaoni, the Spanish studio behind WiiWare rail-shooter Panic, houses several key staff members from Gammick, the Barcelona-based company that put out DS shoot’em-up BBQ last year.

Panic’s character art mimics BBQ’s provocative poses/dress without shame, but the former’s anime style isn’t as magnetic as this particular concept piece for Red from the latter (to be fair, I don’t think this art ever appeared in BBQ or in its promotional materials). And it has more to do with Red’s immodest eyes than her bust.

I like Toto tucked in Dorothy’s pocket, though!

New Zombie Panic In Wonderland details:

  • Nine stages across three chapters
  • Each chapter is based on the respective characters’ fairytales (e.g. Wizard of Oz)
  • Each character has a unique weapon (Momotaro with a katana, Dorothy with a knife, and Snow White with brass knuckles)
  • There are secret weapons, secret levels, and a secret character to unlock
  • Arcade, survival, and multiplayer modes
  • Two difficulty settings
  • Releases in the U.S. this December for 1,000 Nintendo points

Zombie Panic In Wonderland is slated to release in the U.S. this December for 1,000 Nintendo points.

DSiWare cooking up Zombie BBQ

Europeans upset over the missing PAL release for the fairy tale-based shoot’em up, rejoice — Little Red Riding Hood’s Zombie BBQ is now headed to DSiWare for that region.

This isn’t just a condensed version of EnJoyUp’s game either; it will include all 21 stages, 10 bosses, three difficulty levels, three game modes, and both playable characters. I didn’t know Nintendo allowed developers to put out full retail games through the service like this!

But will Zombie BBQ also show up on the U.S. service? That’s difficult to predict, as there’s a chance Nintendo made an exception for the title only in Europe because it never crossed the Atlantic. Japan also never received the game, so perhaps it will also release there and I’ll be able to play it with my import DSi (it’s a longshot).

I initially thought the DSiWare game would be a follow-up to the original but was incorrect in that speculation. However, Zombie BBQ’s spiritual WiiWare sequel from Akaoni Studio, Zombie Panic in Wonderland, is still slated to appear before the year ends. Here’s a new trailer:

I’m still dissapointed that you don’t move forward through stages in the game, but it’s nice that multiplayer is still in and that there are three playable characters planned. Also, Zombie Panic features “scented dwarves”, a goofy workaround for Disney’s seven dwarfs copyright.

Buy: U.S. Nintendo DSi (White, Pink, Black and Blue)

Import: Japanese Nintendo DSi (White, Black, Pink, Red, Lime Green, Metallic Blue)

Zombie Panic in Wonderland direct screen video.

The game looks great! Well, except for these concerns:

  • I hope your character moves forward after several enemy swarms to see more of the level.
  • As with Zombie BBQ, I hear the same sound effects too often; every enemy, from the zombies to demons, has the same death sound effect.
  • Timed stages? Not sure how that will work out.
  • The game could look too cluttered with two players.

I love everything else, though — the music, stage designs, and weird enemies (especially the cherry blossom trees). Expect this to release for WiiWare and PC this December.

Zombie Panic in Wonderland footage from Ideame 2009.

If you missed it the first time we talked about this WiiWare title, this is the spiritual sequel to EnjoyUp’s Little Red Riding Hood’s Zombie BBQ, made by many of the same people behind the DS gem and featuring a similar premise — fairy tale characters blasting the undead.

The main difference between the two is Zombie Panic drops the camera behind your character; it’s surprising how that transforms the game from a vertical scrolling shmup to a Sin and Punishment-style rail shooter.

Unfortunately, whoever is playing in the above video is terrible, so it’s not a good representation of the action you can expect from Zombie Panic.

Zombie BBQ’s WiiWare successor

If I didn’t know that Zombie Panic in Wonderland has a different title and developer behind it, I would assume these screenshots are from the sequel to EnjoyUp’s Little Red Riding Hood’s Zombie BBQ.

But no, this WiiWare title comes from Akaoni Studio, a seven-month-old studio based in Spain. I know EnjoyUp is in Barcelona, so perhaps the Spanish have a unique cultural view on how the undead should look in video games?

As it turns out, a little research shows that Akaoni’s CEO and lead programmer are from Gammick Entertainment — Zombie BBQ’s publisher — as are one of its artists and likely many other employees. So, it’s no surprise that Zombie Panic looks like a more graphically impressive version of the DS shoot’em up from a lowered perspective.

Not that a rehash of Zombie BBQ is bad at all — I loved the first game! While it’s a shame that this isn’t portable, I’m eager to shoot at zombie ninjas with an uzi.

Actually, I’m hoping this new developer succeeds with all of its endeavours, just based on its awesome logo:

Seriously, I’m having a difficult time thinking of any other video game company with a better logo/mascot. You can see more screenshots from the game at Eurogamer.
