Hitting the batting cages in Renegade 3DS. It’s great that Million is packing fun little experiences like this into the remake, but I still think this game is going to have a hard time selling copies when it releases to Japan in a month, even with the reduced ¥4,410 pricing (games typically sell for ¥4,800 to ¥6,090 there).
Again, I’m wishing on a star here that this will sell enough to make a River City Ransom remake with this kind of treatment happen and release to the States.

I know most previews for this import-only 3DS game are mixed, to say the least, but you’ll want to watch this anyway just to hear that remix of River City Ransom’s shop music again.
While I expect hardly anyone will buy this in Japan, I’m crossing my fingers that sales will meet expectations and Arc System Works will greenlight a similar remake for River City Ransom — I’d love to see this motorcycle sequence brought into that potential game.

I wish using that bicycle allowed you to ride around the stage, running over fools, but no, all you can do is pick it up and wield it as a weapon. Who hits people with a bike? If anything, you’re more likely to hurt yourself when the spokes jam into your fingers. Know what I mean? That is some bullshit. I’ll stick with the soccer ball, or, you know, stay strapped with the automatic handgun.

In the third image with the game’s menu screen, you’ll see there’s the expanded and RPG-ish Story mode, the original Arcade mode (but still with Kunio sprites), the Mission mode with local co-op, four-player Battle Royal brawls, the Gallery mode with “nostalgic posters and illustrations”, and the StreetPass Card Battle thing.
JC is flying off to Japan right now to cover Tokyo Game Show for Joystiq — if he doesn’t play and preview this at ASW’s booth, I’m considering his whole trip a failure.

Appropriately beat-up Famicom box for Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun (Hot-Blooded Tough Guy Kunio), or Renegade as we knew it in the West (click for a larger image).
In the partial list of games coming to Tokyo Game Show, Arc System Works has put down a previously unannounced title, also titled Hot-Blooded Tough Guy Kunio, in its lineup. We don’t know much about this title, like whether it’s a remake or something totally new, other than it’s coming to the Nintendo 3DS.
Now anyone who played the original Renegade on an NES or in an arcade will tell you that the game was ass — real talk, it was the butt king of poo mountain. But the title is notable for being of the first beat’em ups, and for being the predecessor to Double Dragon.
Oh, and it was the first game in the Kunio-kun franchise! I presume Million is handling this again — hopefully the studio learned from the dismal sales of River City Super Sports Challenge and River City Soccer Hooligans, and is returning to the series’ 2D roots with this (then again, maybe the reason they switched to 3D is because no one bought Super Dodgeball Brawlers…).

Unfortunately, everything about the game looks kinda sparse, judging by the trailer — sort of like a slower F-Zero with flat tracks. So… I don’t know.
I hope it does turn out not to be boring, because I’d like to stare at this game for a while. On a related note, I hope it’s released outside of Japan.

We noted recently that the release date for this was marked for the same day Dead Or Alive Dimensions is due to drop (according to Nintendo’s schedule, at least), but Aksys has avoided that potential issue by pushing this to a week later — expect this to hit stores on May 31.
The portable version of this arcade fighter adds an Abyss Mode (“upgrade your character to reach the bottom”), a Legion 1.5 mode (“create an army to conquer your foes”), a revamped Challenge Mode, a Platinum Dollars system for unlocking in-game rewards, and more. Unlike SSFIV3D and DOAD, though, multiplayer is local-only!

It looks like a variant of the Sokoban-type puzzle game, in which you have to push blocks into goal areas. And therefore I hate it.
Nevertheless, it’s really cute, and I think the introduction of different-shaped boxes, and rotating boxes, is interesting. It’ll be out February 23 for 500 DSi Points.

BlazBlue: Continuum Shift 2 boxart. For some reason, I’m way excited about all the fighting games on 3DS, despite the fact that the 3DS does not include arcade-quality controls, and despite the fact that I am so, so bad at these games. I’m also pretty excited about the black boxes Nintendo of Japan uses for adult-style games.
In case you missed it, ASW released a new trailer, which I posted on Joystiq last night:

This game, however, isn’t about beating up on bishonen with ’80s metal band names, instead focusing on Chimaki’s trip from hot spring to hot spring, slapping animals with towels.
And now it’s coming to North America! For some reason (That reason is likely “Aksys localizes everything Arc System Works makes”)! According to the ESRB, the American version is called Towel-Slappin’ Pro-Jumper and includes levels whose names ”are based on innuendo and puns (e.g. Nude York, Rome Laid Bare, and Full-Frontal Fuji).” Also of note, the ESRB’s content description: “one leaflet contains text that reads, ‘For help with … un-natural male enhancement.’”
A pillow spinning around on a bar of soap, snapping a towel at animals in hot springs. That sounds like an easy 500 DSi Points’ worth, even if you don’t factor in the extra dick-joke value.

There’s a version of Okiraku Watch for each family member, each of which displays the time and a single still image, and plays random voice clips that I believe are from the games. “Yatta!,” etc. In other words, they’re not-very-useful apps based on games that I didn’t know had fans.
Or do they? If you’re, like, crazy about the Okiraku games, and were really disappointed when the dating one turned out to be a joke, do let us know.

While I’m still thrilled about the idea of new Kunio games, the 3D engine Million has adopted for this and River City Super Sports Challenge is a little disappointing. The instantly recognizable Kunio characters are now jagged block people, and the movement looks nothing like what I’m used to from the series.
Of course, I’ll probably still buy it, so I hope it’s good. It’s out in Japan May 27, so maybe it’ll be out here sometime in the summer.
