Children learning to paint with DSi XLs and copies of Art Academy during a Nintendo-sponsored workshop at Belgium’s Museum of Fine Arts (click for a larger image).

Spending an afternoon at the museum, taking a tour of their exhibits, and taking a free workshop with Nintendo’s Art Academy software sounds like a pretty fun way to get out and waste a weekend afternoon.

I posted more photos from the event earlier this week at GameSetWatch, so hit that up!

Imoto Ayako learns how to draw a tree in Art Academy. Nintendo used the same method for promoting the Japanese release of Art Academy as it did for WarioWare DIY: hire an annoying, but popular, comedian. For DIY, it was Sekai no Nabeatsu, and now, it’s Imoto Ayako, star of Sekai no Hate Made Itte Q! (and its DS game).

You can see an extended video of Imoto learning to draw a tree here. It’s actually kind of sweet! Less sweet and more damned impressive is the gallery of artwork Nintendo curates on the game’s site.

Muramasa’s Kongiku, painted by Vanillaware artist (and Habanero-tan creator) Shigatake. Not only is it notable to have one Vanillaware artist contribute his take on the work of Vanillaware head George Kamitani, this piece is notable for another reason: it was created using DSiWare’s Art Academy!

In fact, it was actually made using two DS games. First, Shigatake drew Kongiku in WarioWare DIY. He then took a picture of a screen displaying that image with the DSi camera, and, using that as a template, drew over it in Art Academy’s “free paint” mode. If you’d like to see the all-DS drawing process for yourself, there’s a video at Nico Nico.

DSiWare-bound: New Shantae, Fieldrunners, and Art Style: Digidrive

Nintendo unveiled a surprising collection of first- and third-party titles slated for its DSiWare service, and I think we can all agree that the most exciting title in the batch is Sparkle Snapshots, which I presume is actually Itsudemo Print Club: Kira Deco Premium.

Oh, and another bit Generations game, Digidrive, is receiving a DSiWare/Art Style port, but consider these details before you get too excited about the game:

Also announced from Nintendo’s end: 10 Electroplankton minigames, Art Academy: Second Semester, Picturebook Games: The Royal Bluff (this weird thing), and Pinball Pulse: The Ancients Beckon (I’m curious about this!).

As for other developers, WayForward is finally releasing one of its many Shantae prototypes, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge, after years of fanboys demanding a new game for the genie. It’s the first release of a three-episode series!

Subatomic is also bringing its acclaimed iPhone tower defense title Fieldrunners to DSiWare (and PSP Minis).

All of the games mentioned above (with the exception of Second Semester, releasing September 28th), are slated for the fourth quarter of 2009. Yay!

Import: Japanese Nintendo DSi (White, Black, Pink, Red, Lime Green, Metallic Blue)
