Persona Q coming on November 25 ⊟
Atlus has a North American release date for Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth launch, and it’s… too far away. 3DS owners are going to have a lot of new toys to play with at the end of the year.
The November date gives you time to save up for the premium-priced $49.99 game (includes 11 tarot cards), the $79.99 limited edition bundle (includes 11 tarot cards, art boooklet, soundtrack CD, 3DS XL hard case, and a special box), and Persona 4 Arena Ultimax for PS3/Xbox 360 (includes inflatable Teddie bop bag and the rest of the tarot cards to complete your collection).
You can watch and sing along with Persona Q's opening movie here. Big ups to YukiXL for the Teddie GIF!

This is not broccoli; it’s probably an Etrian Odyssey teaser ⊟

Atlus posted this tweet and teaser site (titled “This is not broccoli”) for a new game, with a big tree that you scale by clicking an up arrow button. As you scale the tree, the letters 2, D, and X pop out.

Seems reasonable to believe that this is a teaser for a new Etrian Odyssey, as those deal with the world tree Yggdrasil. My guess is that it’s an “Untold” remake of Etrian Odyssey 2 – a “DX” version, so to speak.

We’ll find out, uh, “soon,” by which I mean when the Famitsu article shows up online two days before the game is officially revealed.

Dragon’s Crown for $20 ⊟
The Vita version of Dragon’s Crown is on sale at Amazon for $19.99. I loved Dragon’s Crown when it came out, and frequent tweaks, patches and updates have only made it better since then! There’s an endless tower thing now! Via @wario64.

Shin Megami Tensei IV heads to Europe in Q3 ⊟
Atlus finally completed all the proper demon negotiations required to bring Shin Megami Tensei IV to Europe. It’ll be released on eShop only (in English, which probably won’t be an issue for Tiny readers) sometime in the third quarter of this year.
Meanwhile… sorry Europe, but the game is on sale on the North American eShop for $25. That sale’s active through June 30. Image via Ounomachi.

Persona Q's premium edition coming to North America ⊟

Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth, the Etrian Odyssey-esque dungeon crawler that mashes characters from the Persona 3 and 4 universes, will release in North America with a $79.99 “The Wild Cards Premium Edition” that includes the 3DS game, tarot cards, an art booklet, a soundtrack CD, and a 3DS XL hard case, along with a special box to house all of that.

The standard edition of the game will be priced at $49.99 (reminiscent of Shin Megami Tensei IV's premium pricing). This “first run” will include the tarot cards and special packaging.

These cards are just half of a set, the other half being included in copies of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax. The Persona Q batches will include Tarot Cards of Arcanas XI - XXI.

Persona Q's English E3 trailer ⊟

I feel like we’ve watched two dozen of these Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth clips already leading up to the 3DS game’s launch in Japan, but now we get to see them all again before the Western release, in English this time.

While I don’t see the game up for preorder yet, Amazon does have a variety of Persona Q 3DS skins, 2DS decals and cases, and even the limited edition Grimoire system (for slightly cheaper than you’d find on Play Asia).

I love this FOE’s attack in Persona Q ⊟
This Demon’s muscles are just straight-up knocking out people. The GIF comes from a new clip Atlus put out for Japan showcasing the game’s FOEs.
There’s also a clip that demonstrates map making in Persona Q. Yup, that sure is Etrian Odyssey-esque. Persona Q releases for the 3DS in the U.S. this fall.

Monokuma Strikes in Conception 2  ⊟
Atlus just released some free DLC for Conception 2: “Monokuma Strikes,” a special boss battle against the evil mastermind/stuffed bear from Danganronpa – someone who, I’m sure, would love to hear all about your Classmating, puhuhu!
It’s awesome that this actually made it over, since Danganronpa and Conception 2 don’t share a publisher in the US like they do in Japan. There’s a lot more DLC available, too, both free and paid, that I didn’t notice because it wasn’t Monokuma. Image via Famitsu.

Five-minute Persona Q trailer, subtitled ⊟

Thank you PepsimanGB! I’m even more excited about this 5-minute Persona Q video now that I can easily understand what’s being said. The dialogue seems really fun!

Between the use of Personas, the in-battle/dungeon dialogue, and just the look of the thing, it seems more Persona-y than Etrian-y, even if only superficially. That should really help ease me into the hardcore dungeon crawling.

Conception 2’s Classmating seems innocent, but the rest of the game… ⊟
Despite being about creating babies with your high school classmates, Conception 2 is surprisingly chaste in regards to its signature feature. “Classmating” is successfully portrayed as totally innocent and nonsexual, at least in the couple of hours I’ve played.
Which makes it so much more jarring when the game gets bawdy elsewhere.

Conception 2’s Classmating is basically a religious ritual overseen by a priest, involving the magical energies of a young man and woman commingling in a special matryoshka thing to create Star Children, non-human fighters who look like chibi kids.
I mean, this is definitely a metaphor for actual procreation, and not even a veiled one. Even so, it’s treated as a relatively benign event. The player character frequently introduces himself to female students with something like “Well, we’re going to be Classmating a bunch, so we should know one another!” to a generally casual, upbeat agreement. Spike Chunsoft went to great pains to make Classmating seem totally innocent, just a way for two kids to use their star power to generate tiny cowboys.
Meanwhile, your friend Chlotz is constantly talking to you about how attractive other students are, and trying to get you to get closer to female students. One scene involves you and Chlotz being sent to find a new student who ranks high in combat potential; because she’s a high-ranking student, Chlotz assumes she’s going to be tall and large-chested, because… I’m actually not sure why.

Oh, and that priest? Who is also the school’s headmaster? He seems to take Classmating seriously, but he’s not at all above commenting on the attractiveness of the teenagers around him.
The girls are just as weirdly obsessed with their own bodies. At one point, two students have a conversation about their relative breast sizes out of nowhere, and there’s a particularly embarrassing scene in which a bunch of students get drinks from a vending machine, leading to… well, this line:

Basically, here’s what I think is happening. The central mechanic of the game, which is just barely removed from being actual sex, is treated respectfully and tastefully as a side effect of being novel. What I mean is that there isn’t an existing anime/game template regarding this kind of metaphorical coupling, and so it ironically avoids the usual material.
Whereas the rest of the game is textbook Moe High School Anime, or at least fits my limited image of it, and thus subject to all the tropes that come along with that, including the dumb best friend, the male protagonist humiliated by accidental double entendres, and “waaah, they’re huge!”
Bear in mind, I haven’t completed the game; it’s possible the Classmating gets more moe-infused and the daily life less so. This is just a weird juxtaposition I noticed early on.

Atlus picks up Citizens of Earth for 3DS, Vita (and more) ⊟

Former Kickstarter project Citizens of Earth is now being published by Atlus for 3DS, Wii U, Vita, PS4, and PC. It’s an Earthbound/Mother-esque RPG starring the Vice President of the United States, and has a pretty fun gimmick:

In Citizens of Earth, the new RPG from ATLUS and Eden Industries, help comes in the form of 40 recruitable citizens, each with unique abilities. Everyone can lend a hand — from the way-too-jittery Barista and the ever-optimistic Weatherlady to the notoriously skeezy Car Salesman.

The company is even holding a contest to create your own citizen/combatant.
