Conception 2’s Classmating seems innocent, but the rest of the game… ⊟
Despite being about creating babies with your high school classmates, Conception 2 is surprisingly chaste in regards to its signature feature. “Classmating” is successfully portrayed as totally innocent and nonsexual, at least in the couple of hours I’ve played.
Which makes it so much more jarring when the game gets bawdy elsewhere.

Conception 2’s Classmating is basically a religious ritual overseen by a priest, involving the magical energies of a young man and woman commingling in a special matryoshka thing to create Star Children, non-human fighters who look like chibi kids.
I mean, this is definitely a metaphor for actual procreation, and not even a veiled one. Even so, it’s treated as a relatively benign event. The player character frequently introduces himself to female students with something like “Well, we’re going to be Classmating a bunch, so we should know one another!” to a generally casual, upbeat agreement. Spike Chunsoft went to great pains to make Classmating seem totally innocent, just a way for two kids to use their star power to generate tiny cowboys.
Meanwhile, your friend Chlotz is constantly talking to you about how attractive other students are, and trying to get you to get closer to female students. One scene involves you and Chlotz being sent to find a new student who ranks high in combat potential; because she’s a high-ranking student, Chlotz assumes she’s going to be tall and large-chested, because… I’m actually not sure why.

Oh, and that priest? Who is also the school’s headmaster? He seems to take Classmating seriously, but he’s not at all above commenting on the attractiveness of the teenagers around him.
The girls are just as weirdly obsessed with their own bodies. At one point, two students have a conversation about their relative breast sizes out of nowhere, and there’s a particularly embarrassing scene in which a bunch of students get drinks from a vending machine, leading to… well, this line:

Basically, here’s what I think is happening. The central mechanic of the game, which is just barely removed from being actual sex, is treated respectfully and tastefully as a side effect of being novel. What I mean is that there isn’t an existing anime/game template regarding this kind of metaphorical coupling, and so it ironically avoids the usual material.
Whereas the rest of the game is textbook Moe High School Anime, or at least fits my limited image of it, and thus subject to all the tropes that come along with that, including the dumb best friend, the male protagonist humiliated by accidental double entendres, and “waaah, they’re huge!”
Bear in mind, I haven’t completed the game; it’s possible the Classmating gets more moe-infused and the daily life less so. This is just a weird juxtaposition I noticed early on.

Atlus picks up Citizens of Earth for 3DS, Vita (and more) ⊟

Former Kickstarter project Citizens of Earth is now being published by Atlus for 3DS, Wii U, Vita, PS4, and PC. It’s an Earthbound/Mother-esque RPG starring the Vice President of the United States, and has a pretty fun gimmick:

In Citizens of Earth, the new RPG from ATLUS and Eden Industries, help comes in the form of 40 recruitable citizens, each with unique abilities. Everyone can lend a hand — from the way-too-jittery Barista and the ever-optimistic Weatherlady to the notoriously skeezy Car Salesman.

The company is even holding a contest to create your own citizen/combatant.

Introducing Conception II’s Torri ⊟

So Atlus has started doing trailers for all of the heroines in Conception II, and not just wallpapers – like this one for Torri, who carries a really really big gun.

However, Atlus also sent out a wallpaper for Torri, and just like last time, Twitter people kinda went off script:

Glorious Shin Megami IV OST box ⊟
I’ve embedded an unboxing of the recently released Shin Megami Tensei IV OST posted by @xanthax after the break. There’s not too much exciting stuff included in the set besides the neat sticker and the five million tracks on the four discs, but this was a great excuse to share this legendary cover that we somehow never posted when it was originally unveiled. It’s so awesome and perfect and I would not mind having that framed as a poster in my office.

Seems like Atlus’s PS3 and PS Vita games go on sale every week! I am quite all right with this, especially when it means savings on Persona, Persona 2 (both of them)! Persona 3 Portable, and Persona 4 Golden on Vita!

Conception II demo hits March 25 for 3DS, Vita ⊟

And it will offer demo completion bonuses that players can import into the full game, similar to Bravely Default. The Spike Chunsoft RPG, which has you making star babies who fight alongside your hero in turn-based battles, will release on April 15 in the U.S. and some time in the second quarter of the year in Europe (this demo news is just for North America, by the way).

Publisher Atlus also provided screenshots and details on Mecunites, “giant death robots” that your Star Children can join to form and unleash “a mega-devastating single target attack, an AOE attack, and a heal that heals allies for 100% of health.”

Persona Q coming to U.S. this fall ⊟

Persona Q's 3DS XL, subbed trailers ⊟
We don’t have a photo of it yet, but we now know that Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth will have a special edition 3DS XL system and bundle when it hits Japan on June 5. All first-run copies of the game will also include a Persona Q: Sound of the Labyrinth arrange album from the Atlus Sound Team.
Atlus released two full-length (instead of the usual character-focused) trailers for the game today, which we have subtitled for you thanks to Pepsiman. First up, here’s the trailer for the Persona 4 group:

And one for the Persona 3 crew:

Famitsu also shared a few gameplay details (translated by Gematsu), including how characters will be able to summon multiple personas:

"In Persona Q, characters can have multiple personas. In the past, only the main character could have more than one, but this time your other party members can have “sub-Personas.” Use sub-Personas to complement the skills that each characters’ main Persona doesn’t know.
There are 20 characters and you can use five people in a party. You can set your team in front and back rows during battle. Of course, making a team that complements each other is good, but certain character combinations will have special dialogue occurrences.”

We’ll let you know when/if any of this is announced for the West. :o)

Here’s a Conception II wallpaper, chaps ⊟
So I wanted to post this wallpaper for two reasons, the first being that this game comes out in April and it has totally slipped my mind on several occasions. Are we even going to be ready for another big RPG? Probably not!
Second, everyone else on Twitter had the same idea as me in response to Atlus’s tweet: “Conception II Chloe wallpaper. She’s a teacher at the Academy. What would you like to learn from her?”

Really glad we can come together as a community to make fun of those weird pants.

Y’all didn’t tell me about Conception's cowboy babies ⊟

This English trailer — the first for this 3DS and PS Vita game — cleared it up, though. You can have cowboy babies in Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars. Glad to hear that Spike Chunsoft has put a lot of thought into the conception system, recognizing that it is possible for you to have a cowboy baby when you decide to have a child with your partner.

Oh, and we also now know the game is coming out on April 15!
