Important indie game things

I’ve let quite a few indie game items pile up, mostly non-Nintendo related stuff, so here’s all of them in one go!

First off, Giant Robot is hosting Game Night 8 at its L.A. location tonight, another collab with Attract Mode, Meat Bun, and other partners. The free event will feature Monaco, the much buzzed about stealth/heist multiplayer game — creator Andy Schatz and producer Andy Nguyen will be attending. Bring your 3DS for mad StreetPasses.

Christine Love has just released Analogue: Hate Story, a futuristic follow-up to Digital: A Love Story, which you may remember me raving quite a bit about. The full version is $15, but you can download a demo to get a taste of this “mystery featuring transhumanism, traditional marriage, loneliness, and cosplay.” Those of you interested in the Love Plus phenomena might appreciate this.

Friend of the site Anna “Auntie Pixelante” Anthropy has a book coming up called Rise of the Videogame Zinesters, in which she writes about “how freaks, normals, amateurs, artists, dreamers, drop-outs, queers, housewives, and people like you are taking back an art form.” Need to finish The Corner and 1Q84 by the time this is out — and half a dozen games — so I can pick it up on my Kindle day-one.

Whoa, you could totally be playing Fez tonight. It’s not impossible! You just have to… be in LA from 7-10 this evening, and attend the Game Night 7 event at the GR2 gallery/store/thing, where it’ll be projected onto a big wall outside.

You’ll also get to check out Polytron’s superHYPERCUBE (a 3D Kinect game about putting cubes into holes), get first dibs on new Meat Bun shirts, and collect hella StreetPasses from all the other people there. Basically, if you want to live my ideal life, you should be at this thing tonight.

Game Night 6 features Mighty Switch Force. As always, Giant Robot’s Game Night event looks super fun, featuring a fully WayForward-themed night. This will be the first public demo of the rad-looking 3DS download game, and you’ll also be able to try the other DSiWare/PlayStation Mini games from the company! By the way, Mighty Switch Force’s 3D trailer is on the U.S. eShop right now.

And while you’re there, you’ll get to see (and probably buy) the new line of Meat Bun shirts. BE THERE September 17 at 7PM. And before that, BE HERE to RSVP.

Game Night 5 at Giant Robot LA tonight →

If you’re in the Los Angeles area and want to get together with like-minded gamers, don’t forget that Giant Robot 2, Attract Mode, and Meatbun, and others are holding their bi-monthly Game Night event tonight, starting at 7PM.

While there, you’ll have an opportunity to play unreleased indie games (projected outdoors and playable in game stations indoors) like Haunted Temple Studios’ Advance Wars-style strategy title Skulls of the Shogun, and Revenge Labs’ fascinating 2D fighter Skullgirls

Though neither of those games are for handhelds, you’ll still want to bring your 3DS, as Giant Robot 2 is taking part in today’s “StreetPass Day” promotion.

Anamanaguchi poster for a July show in Williamsburg, illustrated by Maré Odomo and designed by Cory Schmitz (click for a larger image). I am swooning all over this.

The art is based on Adrian Tomine’s ”Super-hero Girls” piece for Weezer, adding extra touches like the yellow Game Boy, Totoro pillow, Wavebird controller, and Famicom. You can also see some Anamanaguchi bits like Frug, the Four Loko can, and band members Peter and Luke (represented here by the lesbian rockers).

Attract Mode will sell 24” x 36” prints at the show.

“I Miss The Way You Felt In My Hands And The Way You Made Me Feel” by Mare Odomo (click for a larger image).

Mare, who you should know from his Letters To An Absent Father comics and all the other wonderful things he does, created this touching art for Attract Mode’s showing at The Toronto Comics Art Festival next month. This guy seems to knock it out of the park every time.

Attract Mode selling custom arcade cabs, three Game Over IV prints

Remember those neat arcade cabinets that we featured from the Attract Mode x Babycastles show a few months ago? They were painted by artists Hilary Florido and David Mauro, and featured designs inspired by shoujo manga and ’80s beat’em-ups, respectively.

Both of the cabinets — originally sticker club machines before these attractive make-overs — are now for sale on Attract Mode! They’re a bit pricey at $1,200 each, but you would be buying “a centerpiece from a watershed moment in NYC’s game-oriented history.” You can see a couple more shots of the setups and other related stuff I’ve been meaning to talk about after the break.

Save on zines and art during Attract Mode's Cyber Monday sale →

I’m sure both you and your wallet are experiencing severe fatigue right now due to a long weekend (and week, even) of sale announcements. So here’s another one! There’s no way I can pass up alerting you to the first Cyber Monday sale — first sale of any kind, in fact — at Attract Mode. Here’s what’s available (still no e-boning):

You can put that $5 you saved on (Cory Schmitz’s) EXP toward the new issue of (Mathew Kumar’s) exp., which is nothing like the former zine but is amazing in its own way.

exp. Issue Minus/Infinity is available now. For a sort of preview, you can download an abbreviated PDF version of the issue, though a print copy is definitely worth buying!

New Letters to an Absent Father comic by Maré Odomo (click for a larger image). Maré made a new strip in his wonderful, kind of melancholy Pokémon comic series as a gift for Attract Mode.

Attract Mode proprietor Adam Robezzoli said that “He got some quality time observing [my son Dante] in his natural habitat, so I’m going to pretend that second panel is our father/son comic strip debut!”

So yes, it is possible for that comic to get cuter, and all it takes is reading one sentence.

“Wisdom, Courage, Power” t-shirt by Cory Schmitz, now on sale at Attract Mode and Fangamer for $22.

There’s also a Stone/Heather Grey version, but since the name of this shirt reminds me of The Lox’s “Money, Power, & Respect” (probably because I saw Sheek Louch a few weeks ago), I have to suggest you snatch up this Gold/Black edition. Whichever one you decide to get, you’ll receive a complementary Triforce pin with it!

Here are both of the designs/styles up close:

If this gets you in the mood to buy more shirts, Meat Bun is selling most of its tees for half the price today — this doesn’t include the awesome “Osu! Giant Robot” design, but they have a lot of other great items you’ll want.

UPDATE: Now the “Osu!” design is on sale too! $18!

Buy: The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks ($18!)
