Modded duotone (Black/White) Game Boy by Nonfinite. I showed off this glorious customization before, but this post comes with video and a demonstration of the system’s chip music capabilities. Fuuuuuuuckkkkk.

I have a whole round-up of chiptune-related links I’ve been meaning to share with you this past week:

  • First off, congrats to Leeni for winning the Beaterator Challenge, a competition that had entrants creating original songs with Beaterator for PSP. I don’t like her submission as much as some of her other tracks like “Animatronic Boy” or “Nice Young Man”, but it’s great a chip artist won and took home $5,000.
  • Someone (or a group of someones?) launched Chipmusic.org, a new community for micromusic artists and fans, and an alternative to 8bit Collective. The design seems Minusbaby-esque, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s involved! It’s just a forum right now, but apparently music/image uploads, a video area, and member blogs are in the works.
  • Marjorie Becker took dozens of amazing photographs at Blip Festival 2009.
  • Again, you should read Matthew “fort90” Hawkins’s extensive report on Blip Festival 2009.
  • The latest episode of Penny Arcade: The Series is out (Child’s Play, Part 1), which is produced by the talented 2 Player Productions, so of course it has a great chip soundtrack.

“Party In The USK”, a Miley Cyrus cover by Luke Silas (Anamanaguchi) at the pre-Blip Festival 2009 open mic.

If you missed Blip Fest 2009 (or even if you managed to attend), check out Matthew “fort90” Hawkins’s extremely thorough report on the chip music concert, sharing summaries for different acts, photos of performances, and a lot of background on the three-day event.

Je Deviens DJ en 3 Jours performing Daft Punk’s “Aerodynamic” at Blip Festival ‘09, accompanied by NO CARRIER visuals. You can see more performance clips from Thursday and Friday at Bytejacker.

Even with the (understandably) shaky camera work, this is amazing. If 2 Player Productions is shooting an official DVD for this show, I am hell of buying it.

Blip Festival starts tonight →

Blip Festival, the annual three-day chiptune festival that I’m not at, started tonight. As I type this, Leeni is performing (picture above tweeted by @blipfestival). If you’re not in New York City, or if you’re in one of the few non-Blip Fest areas of New York City, why not listen to some of the performers’ recordings?

Peter Swimm [via TCTD] put together this playlist of songs from Blip Fest artists whose music is available on the Free Music Archive. It’s really great!

If you’re at Blip tonight and having rad times, check in with us! We want to hear about it.

Tiny Contest: Blip Festival 2008 CDs

Courtesy of 2 Player Productions, we will give away three copies of 8bitpeoples’ landmark release Blip Festival 2008, a two-disc collection of live songs from all 32 artists/groups that performed at last year’s premiere chiptune show.

The four-day concert’s lineup was nuts — Bit Shifter, Minusbaby, Anamanaguchi, Nullsleep, USK, etc. — so if you follow the micromusic scene, you already know it’s off the chain, off the hook, and off the wickkity doo-dah yezzelbar. Plus, we will also throw in 2PP’s Blip Festival 2006 and 2007 DVDs to sweeten the pot.

To enter, leave a comment in any of our chiptune and music posts over the next two weeks (this includes audio posts and any other music-focused media/links we put up) before October 6th, 11:59 EST. Running our giveaway like this has three advantages:

  1. We ensure that the people who actually follow this niche interest will win the prizes
  2. It motivates us to post more chiptune songs
  3. I have an excuse to listen to something other than Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx… Pt. II for the first time in two weeks

As usual, please refrain from leaving us crap comments to sift through — we prefer messages that have substance to them and will ignore any frivolous junk.

Look out for more music posts in the future so you can win a copy of the two-disc set. You can listen to my favorite song from the album here, as well as stream the entire deal through the Blip Festival 2008 Bandcamp page.

Before you ask, yes, commenting in this post counts as a giveaway entry. Yezzelbarr!

Blip Festival 2008: 32 Live Recordings 2xCD.

This two-disc compilation album, 8bitpeoples’s 100th release, is now on sale for $15 — a steal when you consider what 2 Player Productions and 8BP packed in here:

“Every Blip Festival 2008 performer, in order, live at the Bell House in Brooklyn New York City; December 4th through the 7th, two-thousand and eight. The event was recorded, mixed, and mastered to be played at maximum volume by you and yours. So take pity on your neighbors or invite them over to dance.”

l’ve listened to the album several times already — for micromusic fans, this is essential for your collections. Expect a sample recording from the release soon! You can see the full list of chiptune artists appearing on the CDs as well as the tracklist here.

Tiny Review: Blip Festival 2007

In a perfect world, we’d all get to attend Blip Festival, the annual chiptune music event gathering over 30 artists who perform with hacked Game Boys, C64s, and other video game consoles repurposed as music instruments.

In this fallen — some would even say doomed — world, though, most of our schedules and localities don’t match up with the four-day, New York City show. Thankfully, 2 Player Productions chronicled the festival with 2006 and 2007 DVDs designed to “[position viewers] directly between a surging crowd and a bracing wall of sound, one built upon familiar technology turned on its ear.”

True, this review covers a 2.5-year-old show, but 2PP is gearing up to release a Blip 08 live album soon, as well as its Reformat the Planet documentary, so watching this DVD is a good lead-up. Plus, the performances are as great now as they were the day these discs were pressed.

Three details that are fab:

  1. Provides a condensed experience. The 32 sets are collected into four chapters or days, each beginning with a montage of artists setting up their gear in the empty venue. Someone takes the stage, and a sampling of eight sets, one song from each act, stream onto your screen, like a short mixtape.
  2. Excellent way to discover new groups/songs. This mixtape format made it easy for me to hear (and love!) artists that I didn’t pay attention to previously, like Rugar and The Depreciation Guild.
  3. Always interesting cinematography. 2PP received “unrestricted camera access” throughout the festival, which the film crew combined with cuts of the audience, projected animations accompanying the sets, and special effects techniques that kept every performance visually exciting (see Loud Objects’ circuit-bending clip below).
  4. A second disc packed with features, including interviews with the artists, Reformat the Planet clips, Pulsewave videos and flyers, and more.

One detail that is butt:

  1. I wish the DVD extras included more non-show, jam session videos other than the bit with Graffiti Monsters. Speaking of jams, you should check out the Hello France/Farewell Swine Flu sessions, which 2PP recently posted with JDDJ3J, Larry, Glomag, Anamanaguchi, and Starstream.

Tree Wave performing “May Banners” at Blip Festival 2007. I ignored all of the BF07 videos that 2 Player Productions put up last week due to their age, but watching them now, these clips are choice.

“Flash Me Back” by USK.

Like several other dozens of chiptune artists, USK is at this weekend’s Blip Festival and is scheduled to perform tomorrow evening!

I’m not too familiar with most of his work, but he used to perform in a two-man group called Portalenz along with fellow Fukuoka-based Game Boy musician Maru, one of my favorite artists in the chiptune scene.

According to Gameboy Genius, there’s a live stream from Blip Festival running until tomorrow. Give it a listen!

“Man QQQ” from Jellica’s With Love From Grandma.

This six-track album isn’t available for free downloads, but you can purchase a copy or listen to a low-quality stream at Retinascan.

As with the other chiptune artists we’ve featured lately, Jellica will be at this weekend’s Blip Festival 2008 in New York City, performing tomorrow night.

“São Roque (Bella/Boa)” from Minusbaby’s (Richard Alexander Caraballo) latest EP, Saudade for Beginners.

Quick album description:

“After a five-year hiatus, Minusbaby returns … with the hip-shaking Saudade for Beginners; five tunes written in São Paulo, Brazil and East Harlem, New York City.

Saudade for Beginners aims to express life after the experience of ‘saudade,’ a term often discussed pedantically by the academe, but best left to music and poetry as in bossa nova and samba – of which Minusbaby is a devoted connoisseur. Shake what your mãe gave you.”

If you like the song, you can download all five tracks for free, or even see Minusbaby live at Blip Festival 2008, which kicks off tonight in New York City.

Speaking of Blip Festival, it’s interesting to see that organizers for the event bought advertising space on 4chan. Weird!
