Blip Fest Australia tickets on sale now →

Preeeeeetty sure I won’t be able to make it out for this one, but if you’re closer to Melbourne than me, you can pick up tickets now for the inaugural Blip Festival Australia, a two-day chiptune event featuring — a fucking great lineup, actually. Bit Shifter, Hally, little-scale, Saitone, Nullsleep, Trash80, and more.

Tickets cost $22 each per day, or $40 for both days. The festival takes place February 17 and 18 at the Evelyn Hotel. I’m hoping for a livestream, and I’m expecting pictures and videos from you guys.

Blip Tokyo livestream →

I’m not in Tokyo for Blip Festival Tokyo this year — and you’re probably not either :( But! If you’re around the computer this weekend, you can totally listen to a livestream of the performances.

There are both high-quality audio streams (in dedicated regional links) and a video stream (above! or here). You can find a schedule here.

“Prom Night” by Anamanaguchi, a song about prom night and shit, performed live at Blip Festival 2011.

So I tried to record this song with my phone, but it just came out as an undecipherable drone of noise. I guess the iPhone camera isn’t the best audio recording tool? But this video by Emma Story does a great job, and even captures the accompanying visuals by Party Time! Hexcellent!

Here is Anamanaguchi’s other new song from its Blip Festival performance last month:

4mat performing at Blip Festival 2011. This show was definitely one of the more pleasant surprises for me, because I’m a jerk and haven’t followed the Amiga chiptune artist’s work very closely, despite Eric’s posting of three rad tracks over the last couple of years. After the live show (4mat’s first!) I am now a for-real fan.

YouTube user Shikaku11373 captured lots of other performances from the second night of Blip Fest, all available on the YouTube channel. Here’s Bit Shifter covering The Church’s “Under the Milky Way.”

Bit Shifter 3D. I’m really surprised, and happy, that a 3DS photo from last night’s Blip Festival came out!

I always thought Bit Shifter was, you know, pretty cool, but last night’s performance was beyond my expectations, drawing in the whole crowd and making me really, seriously consider trying to teach myself music and/or programming. I came right back to the hotel and downloaded the LSDJ demo after this.

Two Game Boy cameras capturing Anamanaguchi’s Blip Festival 2011 performance. I handed a card to one of the two GB Camera photographers following the incredible, incredibly loud set, so it’s possible we’ll get to see some of the pictures — but this picture of them taking pictures works pretty well too.

Blip Festival continues tonight and tomorrow! Mary (my wife) and I will continue being there, as well.

[Note from Eric: Speaking of the Game Boy Camera, the new and improved GameSetWatch has a pretty rad post today about a Game Boy Camcorder mod!]

Blip Festival kicks off this week [sponsor] →

The Western Hemisphere’s biggest chiptune event of the year, Blip Festival 2011 in NYC, launches in just a couple days, and the line-up of performing artists is killer: Starscream, Anamanaguchi, Nullsleep, Henry Homesweet, Noisewaves, and a couple dozen other talented folks.

Blip Fest will also feature daytime workshops, indie arcade after parties, and much more — the full schedule for the official and satellite events is at the show’s site.

You can buy tickets for the entire May 19-21 concert or for individual nights. From what I hear, the three-day passes are close to selling out, so if you want to experience the full festival, jump on those real soon, kids.

Not familiar with chiptunes or what makes them so great? Well, thanks to our archive, you can get familiar.

Blip Festival returns to New York in May →

The organizers of the Blip Festival chiptune concert series have announced the dates and venue for the fifth Blip Festival New York, and surprise! It’s not in Austin. In a bold move, they’ve gone ahead and picked a location in New York. Specifically, the “art and technology center” Eyebeam, from May 19-21.

No acts have been announced yet, but I’m guessing you can expect NYC-based favorites like Bit Shifter, Nullsleep, Anamanaguchi, Starscream, and basically I’m just going to start listing everyone seen in Reformat the Planet if I don’t stop now.

Blip Festival Tokyo flier by No Carrier and Batsly Adams, with art by Enso and music by chibi-tech. This is definitely the most enjoyable way to look at the lineup for the two-day concert.

Well, actually, loading up the ROM on an NES flashcart and playing it on a real system probably trumps this embedded video, but this is still pretty great. Of course, it goes without saying that if you happen to be in Tokyo on September 4 or 5, you should prooooooobably check this out.

Blip Festival goes to Tokyo! →

Blip Festival organizers have just announced an additional venue for the annual chiptune festival: TOKYO. On September 4, and 5, Koenji High will host the inaugural Blip Festival Tokyo show, featuring awesome Blip Fest stalwarts like Bit Shifter, Hally, and Nullsleep, as well as Nintendo legend Hirokazu “Hip” Tanaka (here’s the Balloon Fight music to let you know why that’s so exciting — and here’s his song about people with the name Hirokazu Tanaka) and YMCK. You can see the full list so far at the site.

I can’t find a good clip from YMCK’s performance at Blip Festival 2006, so here’s a video for YMCK’s cover of Yosui Inoue’s “Yume no Naka E:”

Any Tokyo-based readers willing to share some apartment space for… most of September?
