It’s a Boohemoth! Like one of those big Boos, but a little different from what we first saw in Super Mario World.

If you skip to 00:20 in this New Super Mario Bros. 2 clip, you’ll see the Boohemoth doing the standard hiding-behind-its-hands bit when you’re looking at the ghost — albeit with tennis balls stuffed in its cheeks, and its tongue waggling like crazy — except now it peeks at you after a few seconds, then starts to creep toward you anyway.

The team behind New Super Mario Bros. 2 discusses this addition and other new stuff in the game — like the Sonic the Hedgehog-esque “Dash Mario” run-through shown at 00:35 — in the latest edition of Iwata Asks.
