Tiny Review: Golden Sun: Dark Dawn

After seven years of fans calling for another Golden Sun release and some encouragement from Nintendo, Camelot has shipped a new entry that continues many of the series’ themes but transforms it into a 3D adventure and stars the children of the first two games’ heroes.

Most of the gamers who are picking up Dark Dawn likely also played those first two Golden Sun releases, beloved GBA titles that, for many, served as their first taste of a big RPG on a small handheld. I’ve had little experience with the franchise, but havingg heard so much about its mix of turn-based JRPG combat and Zelda-style dungeon puzzles, I was eager to find out how it compared to all the other quality RPGs releases for the DS this year.

Old Golden Sun commercial finally makes sense thanks to Dark Dawn

Back in 2001 when Nintendo released the first Golden Sun for GBA, the company produced this neat commercial that seemingly had nothing to do with the game.

Check out some of the insane explanations Youtube commenters came up with to justify the commercial:

“It’s just showing the maestro controlling the orchestra in a epic battle like we control the players in the game thus explaining ‘role-playing’, as Golden Sun was one of the first RPGs on the GBA system.”

“The commercial is supposed to be describing how culture (a mainstay of RPGs) is more advanced with the GBA… and uses the Nintendo high end RPG for the system as a simple plug for the game.”

Developer Camelot Software Planning must have either loved the ad or wanted to somehow clear up all the confusion from almost a decade ago, as it’s paid homage to the commercial in Golden Sun: Dark Dawn with a Crystal Dragon summon and a similar opera house scene:

“Psynergy” trailer for Golden Sun: Dark Dawn. For those new to the series like me, Psynergy is the game’s fancy name for elemental powers. They aren’t so special when you remember that the Planeteers have the same abilities, but here’s an excuse to watch new video of the JRPG.

Did you see the new Golden Sun: Dark Dawn commercial we tweeted yesterday? Yeah, not the best ad. Its in-game encyclopedia linking system, though, looks promising!

“Abilities” trailer for Golden Sun: Dark Dawn. So far, I’ve seen a lot of overworld videos for this upcoming RPG, but this three-minute clip shows how you can interact with the world using your characters’ abilities — there’s some combat bits with those abilities, too, which is nice.

As for other Nintendo news coming out of Japan, rumor has it that local, respected paper Asahi Shimbun indicated a 2010 release date for Paper Mario 3DS in Japan, implying a similar launch plan for the Nintendo 3DS. Of course, this supports similar reports we’ve heard from other sources.

Just thought I’d mention that before all the Tokyo Game Show news/media starts to roll in (while I’m asleep)!

A chance encounter at Golden Sun’s Hyrule Bridge. Atrius posted this video last year to demonstrate his homebrew editor for GBA RPG Golden Sun: The Lost Age, but I didn’t get around to watching it until this afternoon.

Since Nintendo and Camelot are taking their time releasing new media and details about Golden Sun DS, I figured this might be a good distraction for the Golden Sun fanboys who are desperate to see anything new done with the series.

There’s a chance that Nintendo will bring this Golden Sun DS to E3 in a couple weeks (if the project is still alive); just expect news for the game to be buried under dozens of announcements, trailers, and screenshots for higher priority titles… like Pikmin 3.

Homebrew Shining Force II remake for Nintendo DS.

Brazilian programmer Renato Bittencourt is adding new graphics, music, characters, secrets, and more to the 1994 Mega Drive tactical RPG. Though he says this is purely a fan project, he has also talked with Ubisoft and Tectoy Digital about possibly releasing the game through Brazil’s curious Zeebo console (I doubt Sega will allow this).

Renato plans to release a demo ROM soon, and eventually hopes to put out the game as episodes in English. He’s still finishing the remake’s engine, but he’s already spent at least a year working on the game. Here’s an emulator preview he posted back in May:
