Secret transformations in A Kappa’s Trail. The first outfit is Captain Rainbow’s titular hero, and the second one is possibly Puddy from Magical Starsign. You can find a Pigmask costume (Mother 3) in the game, too!

I know that Brownie Brown, which developed A Kappa’s Trail, also created Magical Starsign, but I’m unsure if they actually contributed to Captain Rainbow. Perhaps the studio just wanted to pay tribute to Captain Rainbow’s developer Skip Ltd.? If so, it’s a kind gesture.

This is probably the closest to an official release we’ll see for Captain Rainbow in the States. Too bad that the cameo is hidden in a DSiWare game no one bothered to buy.

I don’t know how I missed this rumor, but apparently Official Nintendo Magazine implied a European release of Captain Rainbow in Summer 2009. Nintendo of Europe is so much cooler than Nintendo of America. I’m quite certain we will never see a game over here in which you prove that Birdo is a woman by retrieving a vibrating object from under her pillow.

Captain Rainbow site mining: success!

Thanks to Arne, I can now present you with the wallpapers from the Captain Rainbow website — no Mimin-hunting required! The linked ZIP file contains three different wallpaper images of Skip’s nostalgic “actio-venture” game, each in six different resolutions! None of these feature the NES Golf guy’s protuberant balls, so there’s that.

I then captured enough stupid Mimins to unlock the other bonus material, a set of alternate Captain Rainbow boxarts, as print-friendly PDFs. Most of us probably don’t have a Captain Rainbow box to cover with any of these five new images, but now we can pretend we do. Or we can just look at the images and be happy because we are looking at nice things.

Wishing for Captain Rainbow stuff →

The website for Captain Rainbow, like that of Skip’s previous game Chibi-Robo, makes you hunt for stuff around the site in order to unlock downloads. As a recently-converted Skip superfan, I am quite frustrated to be unable to find enough Mimins for a wallpaper. Anyone else having better luck?

If you can read Japanese, you can take a personality quiz on the site that matches you to one of the exiled Nintendo characters, including Birdo, Crazy Tracy, Devil (from Devil World), and the guy from NES Golf.
