Happy Holidays card from Capy, illustrated by the studio’s Nick “Qiqo” Stephan and Kelly Smith. Our page’s resized version doesn’t do it justice, so click for the larger version!
Those of you who are fans of Capy — as you all should be — will recognize the developer’s adorable blue mascots, a couple characters from Clash of Heroes (one of 2009’s best DS games), Critter Crunch’s Biggs, Super Shove It’s Joe, and Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP’s hero.
Capy’s poised for big things in 2011, what with S:S&S (iPad/iPhone) and Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes HD (XBLA/PSN) on the way. It also has a WiiWare project in the works called Heartbeat, which will be “a dot-matrix musical odyssey about love and robots”!
[Update: The studio also posted a rad holiday pixelart wallpaper, complete with an animated version!]

Clash of Heroes figures/cards/marbles for the Bone Dragon and Sorcerer. You’re supposed to be able to play a game with the cards and marbles (and an opponent, of course), but I don’t understand the Spanish instruction sheet that came included with these two figure packs.
Much thanks to Nathan Vella of Capybara (the developer behind Clash of Heroes and its upcoming HD PSN port) for sending these over. As far as I know, you can only get these figures at shops in Spain/Portugal.

Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes figures, Necropolis set. We covered these toys a few months ago, but they’re finally out! In Spain. As far as I know, Ubisoft hasn’t announced plans to release these PVC toys in other territories, so you’re stuck admiring these online unless you want to bother finding a retailer to import them from.
They’re sold in small packs (presumably with random figures in each pack) and boxed bundles that include four toys, four marbles with symbols from the different factions, four cards, and a copy of the Nintendo DS game:
You can see the full 360° views of all 30 figures from the five factions (Silvan, Necropolis, Academy, Haven, and Hell) at Ubisoft’s Spanish Clash of Heroes site. The photos from the slideshow above come from this lucky chap here, who seems to have all of the toys!

Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes figures, cards, marbles, and history booklet?! All in this Spanish commercial!
I’m not certain if this odd interpretation of the DS game’s addictive puzzle mechanics will translate well to whatever’s going on in this marble/card/figure setup, but it’s nice that Ubisoft is expanding the brand, not just with an HD remake for consoles but with physical toys/games, too!
Nathan Vella, president of Clash of Heroes developer Capy, agrees: “Great to see Ubi is pushing our concept out there.” Hopefully, the publisher will reveal more details on where it will sell the toys and which figures it will manufacture soon. The commercial suggests that fans in Spain will be able to buy bundles with one or four figures/marbles/cards each.
Another interesting point about the commercial is the new CG animation; it’s very different from the U.S. trailer Ubisoft made using just artwork pulled from the game. Barcelona-based ad firms Pistacchio and Kotoc created a shorter version of the spot without the toys, possibly for the game itself. I wonder if Clash of Heroes DS commercials will begin airing in Spain soon?

Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes for $15.45 →
Amazon is selling Capy’s Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes, one of our favorite DS titles and the game we called 2009’s best RPG/puzzle hybrid, for just $15.45! The deal is through a third-party seller, but this is the cheapest I’ve ever seen Clash of Heroes priced.

There’s a disappointing pattern with the portable puzzle/RPG hybrids I enjoy; it started with Puzzle Quest, which was great on the DS but lacked the online battles included in its later PSN, XBLA, and PC versions. Galactrix was fun, too, but the DS edition again only offered local multiplayer, unlike its home console counteparts.
And now Clash of Heroes, a delightful DS game that I’d still have in my system today if it offered online battles, is moving to Xbox 360 and PS3 with online multiplayer, four-player co-op/versus, and new multiplayer-specific artifacts. I don’t blame Capy for not including Nintendo WiFi Connection support in the DS edition, as it’s a small studio and I’m sure they lacked the time or budget to pull it off, but I’m still irked by this.
The Clash of Heroes port looks beautiful, but I’d trade its HD graphics in for a portable and online version any day.

Co-Op #313: Time Capsule. Two reasons why I love this episode and why you should watch it:
- Ryan O’Donnell is wearing Attract Mode’s sharp Game Girl t-shirt. This is the second time in a week I’ve seen someone in a video wearing something I own! The other instance was when I saw the hapless FreeCreditReport guy with my blue jacket.
- The group spends the first half of the show talking about Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes, discussing and demonstrating everything I love about the SRPG/puzzler. It’s a fun watch even if we’ve already convinced you to buy a copy.

Clash of Heroes’s Fiona painted by Capy’s Nick “Qiqo” Stephan (click for the gorgeous large version). I’m guessing this is the piece that studio president Nathan Vella teased when I asked if Capy will put out any walpapers or art for fans of Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes to admire.
Qiqo’s vision of Fiona is dramatically different from Tri Vuong’s more cartoonish design seen in the game:
When I first started talking about this puzzle/SRPG hybrid, I remarked that the characters seemed generic, but I was surprised by how much attention Capy paid to each hero’s story and fighting style when I actually spent time with the game. Though the puzzle mechanics remain the same in every chapter, each character has access to different elite/champion units, wall abilities, spells, and artifacts that change the pacing and tactics for your battles.
If you haven’t picked up Clash of Heroes yet and it no one loves you enough to give you the game as a gift, spend your Christmas bucks on buying a copy!

In our fabulous Clash of Heroes interview last Friday, I complained to Capy about the lack of artwork available for fans to enjoy the addictive game even when they’re not playing it. A few days later, the developer delivers! Expect wallpaper-sized versions of the full scene soon.
It’s been a big year for Capy, pulling itself out of the unfulfilling mobile space to release two outstanding titles, Critter Crunch (PSN) and Clash of Heroes, the latter of which I’ve already described as the best puzzle RPG/puzzle game of the year. They have a lot more planned for 2010, so keep an eye on them next year!
