Trailer for Vampire Variations, a Castlevania tribute coming October 31. Intended as a tribute to the original game with “references” to the others, this album seems to have a lot of guitar-heavy, totally metal reinterpretations of the series’ music, which is completely okay. It even features music by Metroid Metal creator Stemage.

Also completely okay: the album will be released for free.

Hypothetical “3D Remix” boxart for Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (click for a larger image) by Jocchan. For those scratching your heads over why Capcom is listed as the publisher instead of Konami, it’s an old (2006!) NeoGAF joke that I’m ashamed to remember.

Speaking of 3DS packaging, we’ve learned two things about the system’s new boxes in the past week:

  1. As with the Wii, Mature-rated 3DS games in Japan will feature black boxes — this practice hasn’t made it to the U.S. yet, so who knows if we’ll see these.
  2. Japanese 3DS boxes will be slimmer than DS boxes. As long as they’re not those thick, ugly things from Europe, that sounds good to me!

Oh, and word has it that DSi/XL AC adapters should also work for the Nintendo 3DS. Yay.

Card Sagas Wars: Castlevania’s Soma vs Crono and the whole Chrono Trigger crew at times — the team attack at the 1:23 mark is pretty wild!

For those of you wondering when Ahruon and Orkimedes will get around to finally releasing a playable version of this fanmade, M.U.G.E.N.-powered PC project, the Spanish developers explain, “We do what we can when we want and without hurry, so we can only advise you to try to enjoy our development a bit more, even it it’s slow.”

So, yeah, you’ll just have to just settle for these clips we post every few months for now. If you want, you can hold a controller while the video runs and pretend you’re playing — you’ll be amazed by all the moves you can pull off!

“Bloody Tears” mixed with Tupac’s “Realist Killaz” by Rainyphase. This mix is from 2007, but I hadn’t heard it until OSV posted it last night. Not bad!

After listening to this, I realized that with a new Castlevania game out, there must be new versions of “Bloody Tears,” “Vampire Killer,” and other standards to listen to… and then I read this other OSV post, which reveals that none of the Castlevania standards appear.. As much as I don’t want to be the kind of person who dismisses a new game for not adhering to every aspect of its predecessors, I can’t deny feeling some disappointment. I mean, I was about to listen to that on YouTube, and now what am I going to do?

Buy: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow

Castlevania soundtracks on Amazon MP3! Also, an Order of Ecclesia bag

GoNintendo posted this random Amazon deal yesterday, in which purchases of Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia include a voucher for the soundtrack through the retailer’s MP3 store. I thought that a pre-order style bonus for a game that’s been out for almost two years is weird, but I also thought the soundtrack must be available on its own if it’s being offered in this manner.

As it turns out, there are a few Castlevania albums available for download on Amazon! Including Symphony of the Night, Curse of DarknessDracula X Chronicles and even the NES Castlevania. But… not Order of Ecclesia. Still, there are a few ways you can spend those random $5 bonuses Amazon frequently offers with game purchases.

There is, however, an Order of Ecclesia bag available on Amazon. So that’s something. It’s got Shanoa on it.

Japanese commercial for Super Castlevania IV. Before now, there might have been three or four Castlevania tracks that you knew would stay with you for life, pleasantly replaying in your mind whenever you hear about the series. Now there is another.

New shirts from Meat Bun! The theme of this collection is “Wizards ‘n Warriors,” but this seems to have more “utterly fucked-up mashups” than Elrondian knights.

The five new shirts (each available in multiple colors for $24) include things like Golden Axe’s Gilius Thunderhead — who I definitely never thought would be immortalized on a t-shirt — as well as elements from issue 2 of Nintendo Power, and a thoroughly mind-blowing combination of Peanuts, Kid Icarus, and Castlevania II. No, really. That’s a thing you can buy from the internet and put on your body.

“Castlevania The Adventure Rebirth: Another Melody.” These two songs weren’t used in the recent WiiWare game, but were included on the combined Castlevania/Contra ReBirth soundtrack disc.

A similar bonus was included for Contra:

Who the hell knows if the new XBLA/PSN Contra game will be any good, but at least we should get some new YouTube music rips out of it.

Castlevania’s first level, played with a DDR Mario Mix pad. I’ll forgive Nick Hagman’s mugging in the intro to the video, because this is actually pretty impressive. I remember trying to play a traditional game with a DDR pad back when the first PlayStation game came out, but I wasn’t at all successful. I kinda feel like trying again now.

At the very least, it looks like a novel exercise program — playing Castlevania tends to have a pretty dramatic effect on my heart rate anyway.

How the hell did he jump and throw holy water?

“Vampire Killer” super mix by Hardcore Gaming 101’s Discoalucard. I love me some Vampire Killer music compilations, and this one is a continuous mix of seamlessly integrated songs from throughout the Castlevania series. I’d type more about it, but I’m listening to several versions of “Vampire Killer” right now.

“Castlevania Ghost” by podkaynestudios. This painting of a classic Castlevania sprite has an awesome color scheme and highlights a less commonly fan-arted creature.

I think it also has kind of an abstract appearance. Even more so if you’re not totally familiar with vintage Castlevania! It’s the combination of the somewhat out-of-context image and the fact that seriously, what the hell is the Ghost in Castlevania supposed to be? It’s like a flaming, elongated skull or something? Kind of looks like those disgusting owl pellets we dissected in school.

Shanoa by Jian Huang (click for the large, detailed version). This is a variation of the artwork Konami debuted Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia with in 2008, showing the DS game’s heroine in mid-leap wielding a giant spear and dressed in hooker boots. This ink illustration lacks the deep blues and purples in the official art but has a “Xeroxed zine” look to it that I appreciate.
