“Vampire Killer” super mix by Hardcore Gaming 101’s Discoalucard. I love me some Vampire Killer music compilations, and this one is a continuous mix of seamlessly integrated songs from throughout the Castlevania series. I’d type more about it, but I’m listening to several versions of “Vampire Killer” right now.

“Castlevania Ghost” by podkaynestudios. This painting of a classic Castlevania sprite has an awesome color scheme and highlights a less commonly fan-arted creature.

I think it also has kind of an abstract appearance. Even more so if you’re not totally familiar with vintage Castlevania! It’s the combination of the somewhat out-of-context image and the fact that seriously, what the hell is the Ghost in Castlevania supposed to be? It’s like a flaming, elongated skull or something? Kind of looks like those disgusting owl pellets we dissected in school.

Shanoa by Jian Huang (click for the large, detailed version). This is a variation of the artwork Konami debuted Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia with in 2008, showing the DS game’s heroine in mid-leap wielding a giant spear and dressed in hooker boots. This ink illustration lacks the deep blues and purples in the official art but has a “Xeroxed zine” look to it that I appreciate.

“Vampire Killer” from Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth. Now that the game is finally out in North America, we can get to important matters, like obsessing over its soundtrack. If you’d like to join in, you can download the music from the Castlevania Dungeon!

This “Vampire Killer” sounds a lot more like the X68000 version than the SNES Castlevania IV, Dracula X, or Genesis versions, so maybe the X68000 platform is what ReBirth is actually imitating.

At this point, I realize I’m essentially writing out the “Vampire Killer” music comparison I posted before, so you should just go listen to that.

“Mansionvania: Vacuum of Sorrow” by Shane Gill. A pixelart remix of Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow and Luigi’s Mansion! I could do without the UI elements cluttering the image, but I guess if this was actually turned into a DS game (which won’t happen ever), Konami or Nintendo would move that junk to the second screen.

Speaking of Metroidvanias, 1UP’s Jeremy Parish put up a post today about why he hates Order of Ecclesia. I don’t have an opinion on the game, seeing as I played it for only 10 minutes to help my wife figure out the crab boss.

St. Nicalis leaves coal in our X-Mas stockings

I predicted yesterday that this could be the week we finally receive Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth and the Cave Story remake, basing my prophecy on the absence of both titles in Nintendo’s 2010 schedule. As those of you who checked your WiiWare stockings this morning for a Christmas week present found out, however, neither title showed up! Sorry if I ruined Christmas for you.

Instead of those titles, we got a bunch of junk and Intelligent Systems’s Eco Shooter: Plant 530, which might be junk, too; who knows? Of course, none of this was actually the fault of Cave Story developer Nicalis — it just made for a snappier headline. Blame Nintendo of America for holding back its anticipated releases, leaving you to spend your holiday break playing TV Show King 2 (although at least one person has told me this is an interesting game).

I think I’m going to stop making guesses on release dates because I’m always wrong about them (And no, Reflection, I haven’t forgotten about you). But before I do that — I guarantee you that Castlevania and Cave Story will come out on WiiWare next week. In fact, if they don’t, I will make up for it by not mentioning my failed prediction at all and by acting as if this post never happened.

Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth U.S. trailer. I’ve no idea why they chose this out of place music for the clip instead of using one of the tracks in the actual game.

Konami finally posted a page for the game on its U.S. site — perhaps this means it will hit our Wii Shop Channel soon? Maybe even tomorrow? It would make sense considering that Nintendo didn’t list Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth in its 2010 lineup (Cave Story wasn’t included in next year’s schedule either).

Hatsune Miku cover of “Vampire Killer,” presented here in honor of Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth. A remixed song to go with a remixed game! Here’s a big-ass medley of Castlevania II music:

My favorite thing about listening to a bunch of Miku music is that eventually I’ll stop hearing it as a fake voice, and it’ll just sound like synthesizer noise. Then I’ll suddenly pick it up again.

Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth stage 1. Now that this is Game Boy remake is available on Japan’s WiiWare channel, full stage playthroughs are hitting YouTube, and the game looks like brilliant, old school Castlevania fun. And the soundtrack — my God, the soundtrack is insane.

Here’s what’s come out so far about the game (spoilers):

  • three difficulty modes
  • six stages with alternate paths
  • no jumping on or off stairs
  • you can control your jumps in mid-air, but if you beat the game, you can access a “Classic” player style that won’t let you control your jumps in mid-air
  • Koji Igarashi is listed as the producer for the project (eat it, Iga haters)
  • M2, which also handled the Contra and Gradius Rebirth titles, developed this
  • Nobuhiko Matsufuji (Dawn of Sorrow), Basiscape’s Manabu Namiki, and M2’s Keisuke Koga and Jason “Chip-Tech” Nisperos handled the music

Even if you don’t want to spoil the game for yourself, you should definitely load up VixyNyan’s Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth video playlist in a background tab just so you can enjoy the kickass soundtrack.

Five screens from Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth. More likely than not, this will release on Monday, ahead of Halloween and a day before Japan.

Again, this is a remake of Castlevania: The Adventure, the nearly 20-year-old Game Boy game that kind of sucked, starring Christopher Belmont, the great-grandfather of Simon Belmont. What made him so great? Well, he has a fireball whip. Also, I hear he gives out loads of candy to trick-or-treaters. True story.

Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth scan from this week’s issue of Famitsu (click for larger image).

Along with a visual overhaul, this WiiWare remake of the first Castlevania release for Game Boy features “new enemies, new traps, and other improvements”, according to Duckroll’s translation. The soundtrack consists of new arrangements for classic Castlevania tracks.

Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth releases in Japan for 1000 Nintendo Points on October 27th, just in time for Halloween. I suspect the U.S. version also release this month to coincide with the holiday, though Europe is another matter. Aren’t Cave Story and the LostWinds sequel supposed to hit in North America this month, too?

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“The Accursed Seal” by Sixto Sounds, from OverClocked Remix. Not sure how I feel about the flanger effect early on in this “Bloody Tears”/”Within These Castle Walls” performance, but at least it’s an interesting choice, and the rest of the song is searing hot.
