Tiny Cartridge 3DS

Castlevania: Mirror of Fate demo out today

If you head to the eShop later this afternoon, you can grab the 3DS demo for Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate. The impressions I’ve read for the trial so far have been mixed, but supposedly the actual game is decent times. Plus the cutscenes, like the ones you see in these GIFs posted by video game stuffs, seem to have the right tone.

As usual, you can see the full list of handheld digital releases for today, a couple new sales, and more on our Upcoming Releases page.

Castlevania: Mirror of Fate 3DS case
Preorder the game at GameStop and you’ll get one of these to decorate and protect your (original style) 3DS. The game will be out… man, sometime in 2013? Hopefully? Right now Gamestop says March 1, but that’s almost certainly a placeholder.

Castlevania: Mirror of Fate playthrough of the entire E3 demo. I’m still unsure what to think about this — though after watching the presentation last night, my Castlevania-obsessed wife was not happy at all with these changes for her favorite handheld game series.

Was I the only one half-expecting/hoping Trevor Belmont would jump into that red-armored enemy’s suit, then roam around the stage demolishing fools Metal Slug-style?

Here’s a throwaway trailer for Castlevania: Mirror of Fate for you to take in and pass a few minutes while we wait for Nintendo’s E3 presentation to begin in a half hour. There’s like ten seconds of gameplay at the end, which is better than nothing but not by much.

Half an hour, guys. My body is Reginald.

Simon and Trevor Belmont return for Castlevania: Mirror of Fate on 3DS

More details have come out from Nintendo Power's cover story for Castlevania: Mirror of Fate, and it turns out that the game stars two familiar heroes from the series: Simon and Trevor Belmont. My Nintendo Power cover art comparison — and Pushmo code posted last week — seems way prescient now, even though I didn’t plan that.

Mirror of Fate takes place within Lords of Shadows’ continuity reboot, so this is not the same Trevor you know and (presumably) love. … The gameplay in Mirror of Fate stretches across time, and players will eventually be able to control Trevor’s descendent, Simon Belmont. Two other unnamed characters are in the game as well.”

This seemed like a great opportunity for me to share these illustrations of Simon and Trevor (unrelated to Mercury Steam’s game) posted recently by Simon Gough.

Comparing Nintendo Power’s Castlevania: Mirror of Fate and Simon’s Quest covers — Mirror of Fate's art is great, but the latter cover is unforgettable.

So the latest NP formally reveals Castlevania: Mirror of Fate, a new 3DS entry for Konami’s vampire vanquishing series, from Spanish developer Mercury Steam. As indicated by the full title on NP’s cover, the game is related to Mercury Steam’s Lords of Shadow games that came out in 2010.

Judging by the initial Mirror of Fate screenshots scanned and posted online, this looks like a 2.5D platformer, and not the sprite-based 2D affairs we’re used to.
