My cats… IN 3D. A new site called 3D Porch lets you upload MPO files from devices including the 3DS, and share them as either “wiggle” or anaglyph 3d images — I chose the wiggle variety for two reasons: 1) lol, and 2) I can actually see this 3D effect!

As a result, I’m learning a bit about 3D photography. For example, the further away I am when I take a picture (see Indiana on the floor there), the more “3D” it appears instead of merely “the same picture taken simultaneously with two cameras”.

Happy Caturday!

So, what did you get for Christmas? Did your loved ones love you enough to buy you the year’s best DS RPGs? Maybe your relatives decided to make it rain with cash and gift cards? Cat and dog shirts? A copy of Videogames Hardware Handbook Volume 2? A Nene body pillow? Expensive things you don’t really deserve considering your meager contributions to this world? Let us know!

Sick day photographed by Will Yurman. I wish I could call off work tomorrow and just lay on the couch in my pajamas, playing video games (Scribblenauts!) next to two kittens.

I wouldn’t waste the entire day playing games, of course. I’d take a break to eat up a Totino’s pizza and watch some David the Gnome (sadly, I’m certain Nickelodeon stopped airing this show a decade ago).

Somewhat NSFW: Bathtub gaming.

What brought about this distressed expression? Perhaps Haggleman 3’s twist ending? Or a corrupted save file and an empty inventory in Shiren the Wanderer?

According to photographer and subject Skolvodka, she had just died in an unnamed video game she was playing.

Skolvodka asked us to take his photo down. Please enjoy this PictoChat artwork in its place, drawn by Katy Niikura.

Cat loves Rittai Picross. Or at least, he loves watching the game and occasionally pawing the DS.

It’s cute, yes, but not nearly as impressive as this video of my own cat, Hemingway, blazing through Ouendan 2:

He’s a beast! Literally, hur hur hur. Notice how far Hemingway was able to get in the game despite me distracting him and pulling his arm, halfway through.

Moving Memo Pad’s derivative animations

[The DSi’s free Moving Memo Pad software interests me much, so expect more ramblings on it. My apologies! For homebrew animation solutions, look into Flickbook, Animanatee, and Inchworm.]

One feature that I haven’t seen mentioned about the DSi’s downloadable flipbook app is the ability for users to download someone else’s animation, and then remix that piece with their own art or music.

The above clip, for example, takes an existing “dancing cat” cartoon and draws in an accompanying mouse. The original itself is based on another piece, a strange animation with the same music. There are several dozen additional derivative shorts, some featuring extra cats, Kirby, Gachapin’s Mukku, and, yes, Hitler.

When a user uploads an adapted animation to Ugoku Memo Hatena, a free YouTube-like service for these creations in Japan, the video page notes and links the original work, so you can’t just take all the credit like a jerk. The same page also lists other pieces that your clip might have inspired.

And if you don’t want anyone messing with your art, you can lock your animation to prevent edits to it.

Here’s another cool piece, based on this rotating skyline:

There are also versions with Kirby and strange fish.

Pretty cool, right? I thought so!

If you can get past the boring first half of the above clip, at the 1:15 mark, you’ll see some remarkable technology demonstrated with the DSi’s camera — the ability to attach cat whiskers and ears to your subject, no matter how hard they try to evade your system’s gaze!

The DSi’s camera is a lot like the always vigilant Eye of Sauron, except instead of piercing your soul with its cold stare, it makes you look like a cute kitten. Also, check out the new music visualizer around the 1:35 mark.

Since we’re talking about the DSi — and because you likely don’t want to see another DSi post pop up right after this one — I’d like to note that, yes, I’m one of those fools who put in a $300 ($325 with s/h) preorder for the system.

That sounds like a crazy amount of cash to spend on a somewhat region-locked device, especially in this economy, but it seems more sensible when you consider the following:

  • the strong yen (and declining dollar)
  • some Japanese shops ran out of preorder tickets within 20 minutes of making them available
  • Rakuten’s online shop has the DSi listed at $321, plus shipping and handling
  • middleman World Select Market is selling the systems for $393 through Amazon Japan
  • in addition to buying the systems, import shops need to pay homeless people (and Chinese nationals) to fill up launch lines, then pay to have the product shipped to their warehouse before they can send it to you
  • the DSi’s expected U.S. release is six months away

That all said, I still feel like a guy who does not make wise decisions about spending money.

Before you hear it from any other so-called “gaming journalists,” JC and I are working on a DS game loosely inspired by the cat in Konami’s Time Hollow.

We don’t have a title for the game yet, nor have we written a single line of code, but we’re in talks with several interested publishers already, so expect to hear an announcement from that front soon.

Though we didn’t actually produce the above video, consider it our first officially released trailer for the upcoming Nintendo DS title.
