Custom Cave Story figurine by Kodykoala. This memorable scene of Quote carrying an unconscious Curly Brace has lots of great details, large (the optional air bubble) and small (junked robot parts on the floor). I always find this sequence really nerve-wracking…

The basis for this figure is a Pinky Street toy, with Ash from Pokemon as the head.

Cave Story (DSiWare) trailer. So Cave Story will finally be released on DSiWare in Japan on November 22!

Is it just me, or is the new footage of Quote sitting in the dark playing Cave Story just slightly creepy? Like, not full-on creepy, but bearing an essence of creepiness.

A story about Cave Story 3D →

I can confirm that Nicalis’s polygonal update of Cave Story is not butt. I can confirm this by having played the damn thing for a bunch of hours.

My review is up on Joystiq right now, if you’d like to read that opinion in more detail. Like all of you, I was hella skeptical about the graphics, only to come to the conclusion over hours of play that I liked seeing a new take on familiar environments, and I really liked the new look of some of them! The new Egg Corridor is awesome. The new Plantation is really strange!

Eric and I were both kind of surprised that this was actually coming out this week. Not really really, because we knew the date and I had that review copy and all, but just in terms of still feeling like Cave Story 3D is something we’d be waiting months for. Does that make sense?

Cave Story + contest winners!

We recently asked our readers to “describe Balrog” for a chance to win a Mac App Store copy of Cave Story +. We got tons of fun responses, because you’re all brilliant, but in the end we did the terrible duty of reducing the list down to five winners, to whom we’ve handed out the codes. Huzzah, etc. Here’s who we picked:

Axel described Balrog as “an Altoids tin who only comes in one flavor: bumbling.”
wuuds said “Balrog is the craziest enemy I’ve ever fought. I mean the guy wears suspenders over his eyes… WITHOUT PANTS! I still have nightmares…”

Surprise! Cave Story+ out for Mac

Out of nowhere, Nicalis has released Cave Story+, an enhanced port of last year’s WiiWare remake, to the Mac App Store (Windows release on Steam forthcoming).

Along with the upgraded “HD” graphics, remastered soundtrack, official re-translation, and bonus modes, Cave Story+ adds the Wind Fortress level, the first original area designed from scratch by Daisuke ‘Pixel’ Amaya since the original PC release. This version also has USB gamepad support, and will receive future content updates.

I wonder if Wind Fortress will make it into the upcoming 3DS remake? Anyway, you can download Cave Story+ right now for $9.99 — more screenshots after the break!

“Sand Zone” music remix from Cave Story 3D. This sounds great — and features a synth sound that totally reminds me of the Mannheim Steamroller Christmas album we used to play in my house every year.

If you want to read less about ’80s synth music and more about Cave Story, Gamasutra posted an interview with creator Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya, conducted by Christian Nutt. Asked about the prospect of more people being able to play his game thanks to the 3DS release, Pixel said he was “so happy that it’s beyond my capacity to explain it.” Aw!

New Cave Story 3D screens show the options for the bottom screen. As of now, you can see a cool-looking map of the room you’re in, or an inventory screen, on the “PXL-001” computer. Cute!

The screens also give you a look at the redrawn weapon icons — a pretty subtle change that might get overlooked because of the less subtle change of all the graphics. Nicalis now has time to make some more changes — publisher NIS America announced yesterday that the game was delayed until November 8.

Cave Story 3D trailer with 2.5+ minutes of new gameplay clips. The Sand Zone environment doesn’t stand out for me, but the Egg Corridor and Waterway scenes show a very different and much better looking game than what we saw in the remake’s initial screenshots. Also, we get to hear more of Danny Baranowsky’s “Bushlands” remix!

Did you read JC’s Cave Story 3D preview from E3, by the way? It’s full of reassuring notes like this:

“Nicalis had been paying attention to the reaction to those first images, and is working to make something that reinterprets the environments of the retro-style original in a more palatable — and more parsable — way. It is not ruined by the 3D graphics.”

Sounds great! Worryingly, though, two retailers recently updated their listings for Cave Story 3D to indicate a release date long after its scheduled August 9 launch…
