Tiny Cartridge 3DS

Prototype Cave Story Quote figurines. Nicalis tweeted these yesterday, noting that the little one is about 3” tall, and the big one is about 5” tall. Assuming that they are some day painted and mass-produced (or the other way around), I’m down for one.

Oh wow, Cave Story 3D's Japanese cover is like a spillion times better than the North American box — yes, the counter we used to measure just how much more amazing it is shot up so fast, numbers started spilling out of the device and left our floor a jumble of digits.
I am pretty sure this cover is from Zanpan, the same fellow behind this fantastic Cave Story fanart we featured a couple of years ago. Now, who’s with me in pressuring NIS and Nicalis to put out a high-res image for this, so we can print it out and use it as an alternate cover?

Cave Story 3D 3DS case by whataboutki. Nice use of Cave Story 3D concept art, on what looks like a well-made case. It even has a pocket for AR Cards. Remember those?

I can confirm that Nicalis’s polygonal update of Cave Story is not butt. I can confirm this by having played the damn thing for a bunch of hours.

My review is up on Joystiq right now, if you’d like to read that opinion in more detail. Like all of you, I was hella skeptical about the graphics, only to come to the conclusion over hours of play that I liked seeing a new take on familiar environments, and I really liked the new look of some of them! The new Egg Corridor is awesome. The new Plantation is really strange!

Eric and I were both kind of surprised that this was actually coming out this week. Not really really, because we knew the date and I had that review copy and all, but just in terms of still feeling like Cave Story 3D is something we’d be waiting months for. Does that make sense?

New gameplay trailer for Cave Story 3D, mostly showing off the Egg Corridor, Grass Town, and Sand Zone. That remixed version of the Egg Corridor music is very nice.

Quote in 2D and 3D, exploring Cave Story 3D. In case you didn’t get the memo, you can play the game with the original 2D sprite through a selection on the main menu. For the rest of you who want to play something that looks more like the original Cave Story on your 3DS, well, you know the game’s also on DSiWare/eShop, right?

Don’t forget! We’re giving away five copies of Cave Story+ for Mac — it’s a suuuuper easy contest.

"Sand Zone" music remix from Cave Story 3D. This sounds great — and features a synth sound that totally reminds me of the Mannheim Steamroller Christmas album we used to play in my house every year.

If you want to read less about ’80s synth music and more about Cave Story, Gamasutra posted an interview with creator Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya, conducted by Christian Nutt. Asked about the prospect of more people being able to play his game thanks to the 3DS release, Pixel said he was “so happy that it’s beyond my capacity to explain it.” Aw!

Cave Story 3D’s title screen, in wigglepic form. Nicalis posted the first 3D screenshot of the upcoming 3DS remake on Twitter, and we wiggled it up using 3DPorch. If you want to view it on your 3DS, you can download the file from Nicalis. Some pretty nice 3D for a title screen!
In other 3DS wigglepic news, developer Arika showed off some shots of a fighting game “test project” for 3DS. You can download a bunch of MPOs here, load them on your 3DS, and see what it would be like if that were a game.

New Cave Story 3D screens show the options for the bottom screen. As of now, you can see a cool-looking map of the room you’re in, or an inventory screen, on the “PXL-001” computer. Cute!

The screens also give you a look at the redrawn weapon icons — a pretty subtle change that might get overlooked because of the less subtle change of all the graphics. Nicalis now has time to make some more changes — publisher NIS America announced yesterday that the game was delayed until November 8.

Cave Story 3D trailer with 2.5+ minutes of new gameplay clips. The Sand Zone environment doesn’t stand out for me, but the Egg Corridor and Waterway scenes show a very different and much better looking game than what we saw in the remake’s initial screenshots. Also, we get to hear more of Danny Baranowsky’s “Bushlands” remix!

Did you read JC’s Cave Story 3D preview from E3, by the way? It’s full of reassuring notes like this:

"Nicalis had been paying attention to the reaction to those first images, and is working to make something that reinterprets the environments of the retro-style original in a more palatable — and more parsable — way. It is not ruined by the 3D graphics."

Sounds great! Worryingly, though, two retailers recently updated their listings for Cave Story 3D to indicate a release date long after its scheduled August 9 launch…

Fresh Cave Story 3D screens take us through Sand Zone and Egg Corridor. Many gamers have been denouncing this game so far based on early shots, but the remixed soundtrack is on point, this latest image set looks great, and impressions popping up online are positive.

From Nintendo Life’s new preview:

"For anyone that’s seen the various screenshots of Cave Story 3D, you need to toss those out of your mind because you can’t truly appreciate the game’s amazing visual presentation until you’ve seen it for yourself.

Once you witness the game in motion and with the full 3D depth in place, then you’ll begin to appreciate just how beautiful the game truly is. Worlds that were once familiar to you from past releases come alive onscreen in a way never before seen.”

Okay, that almost sounds like an NIS America marketer penned that, but maybe it really was that good?
