Cave Story Wii’s E3 trailer.

It’s a shame Nintendo didn’t talk about WiiWare at its press conference yesterday, especially since the company hopes to encourage more indie involvement on the digital download platform, at least according to its statements made at recent events like GDC and DICE. Oh well, I’m happy with this new trailer for Cave Story. This is slated for a summer release — I’m hoping for early summer.

Outer Wall from Cave Story’s WiiWare port.

This new version of “Moonsong” sounds great! Thankfully, if you don’t like Nicalis’ reworked songs, you can choose to play the game with the original soundtrack.

On a related note, if you haven’t yet, you should check out Fathom, the latest Flash game from Adam “Atomic” Saltsman, who happens to be working on the high-res graphics for the Cave Story port. Fathom certainly seems inspired by Cave Story (at first), but there’s more to it!

“I Am A Cave Story” by Annabelle Kennedy.

Another birthday tribute to Cave Story creator Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya! Kennedy was also the artist behind the “Cave Story Anthem” song and video, which you should watch below if you haven’t yet:

Cave Story tribute art by Nigoro. Like the brilliant art from Adam “Atomic” “Ice Cold 3000” “Gravity Hook” Saltsman, this was sent to Nicalis to celebrate Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya’s birthday. Also like that brilliant art, this one comes from one of our favorite indie game creators.

Nigoro just happens to be behind the wonderful slap-fighting Flash game Rose & Camellia, which, I just realized, I’ve gone too long without playing. Without the Rose & Camellia connection, this artwork is fantastic. Having noticed the connection, however, it’s even better.

Is Nigoro working on this game too? I mean, between Adam Atomic, Nifflas, and (obviously) Pixel, the Cave Story WiiWare team is already somewhat of a supergroup. And if they aren’t, maybe I should try to bug them about a WiiWare or DSiWare version of Rose & Camellia.

“Pixel put all the console and handheld ports on ‘indefinite hiatus’ when the talks with Nintendo started up …

[Nicalis and Pixel] didn’t want it souring the WiiWare announcement, fairly enough.”

— Ravenworks, who was working on the homebrew DS port for Cave Story. The small demo he posted in mid-2007 was very promising! It’s just a shame that promise wasn’t able to bloom into a full portable release. At least there’s still Cave Story PSP!

There were rumors about this stalling of homebrew CS projects last year, before the WiiWare game was announced, but I haven’t seen anything corroborating them until Raven left us this comment.

“The graphics and music of that era are very memorable and priceless to me. Looking back now, it was a really carefree time — at the time, I didn’t have to worry about the future.

All I had to worry about was playing games on my Famicom.”

— Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya, Cave Story’s creator, talking about classic NES games with Nintendo Power.

His favorites include Super Mario Bros., Dragon Quest II, Metroid, Chubby Cherub, Star Soldier, and Gradius.

First in-game screenshot of Cave Story running on the Wii with the new graphics. Head to GoNintendo to see it in full size, along with a Wii screenshot using the original graphics. It looks nice, but all the UI stuff has a Super Eagle filter or whatever on it.

Also, yesterday, Kotaku posted the new sprite for the protagonist, Quote. For a robot, the dude is hell of shaggy.

Unofficial sprite modification of Cave Story’s Gravekeeper, created by Sovan Jedi while discussing the addition of even more detail to Nicalis’ updated sprites. Pixel’s original Gravekeeper sprite is shown in the center.

Sovan Jedi’s comments on the experiment:

“While I do think they would be quite nice with more rounded shading and more colours as on the right, it lacks its particular style of the high-contrast low-colour variants, and that’s partly what makes the game so appealing in its retro graphics.”

Since we’re talking about the enhanced graphics for Nicalis’ forthcoming Cave Story WiiWare release, if you haven’t seen it yet, JC secured an exclusive preview of Sue Sakamoto’s sprite from the developer.

Splash Woman hentai (NSFW), by Anonymous

In the year 20XX, Splash Woman will sit on your face.

Gamers being the deviants they are, the Splash Woman hentai scene is already booming. Even without any visible female genitalia, the Mega Man 9 boss has fast become a sex idol for people who spend hours each day seeking new perversities to worship.

So, while I’m not surprised by the growing amount of fanmade Splash Woman pornography, it’s interesting to see some of the fetishes that artists have used the villainess to satisfy, like the image above of an ample-bottomed Splash Woman smothering Mega Man.

Other images that will never leave my head despite my best attempts to scrub them from my memory — I’ve even considered erasing them Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind-style — include Splash Woman drawn as a muscular bodybuilder and Mega Man shown performing fin-illingus.

I won’t identify the community where I stumbled upon all this, as its name is too offensive to print here, but I will share some of the more interesting and less explicit pieces:

Oh Dr. Light, what hast thou wrought?!

[The artists are all anonymous, otherwise I’d properly credit them.]

Cave Story WiiWare developer Nicalis revealed this menu screen on its blog, showing that the new version will support three save files.

Not only is this nice for multiple players, it also means that I’ll be able to play through multiple paths simultaneously, perhaps even copying my save into all three spots at branching points. What a timesaver!

The original King sprite from Cave Story, compared with the new WiiWare sprite. King looks like even more of a jerk. I wonder if the SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER will be updated as well.

Interview with Nicalis’ Tyrone Rodriguez on Cave Story.

There are a few spoilers in this clip, but you can hear a short bit of music at the 00:25 mark, and Rodriguez also talks about the WiiWare game possibly coming before year’s end at 500 - 1000 Wii Points.

More video and music: Grasstown Gameplay and Slippery Bogle Gameplay.
