“There Is a Light That Never Goes Out” by Leeni (The Smiths cover). Leeni is one of my favorite chip artists and all, but this version hardly matches the brilliance of the original. It’s not her fault; Morrissey is just the fuckin’ boss.
Anyway, I’m sharing this track here because it’s an opportunity to mention how I overcame my karaoke fears and sang this song in front of a real audience (one I’ll hopefully never see again) after much goading during my Philippines trip a couple weeks ago. My wife followed up with an awesome rendition of The Animals’s “The House of the Rising Sun.” Yes, I know people sing karaoke all the time; those people are not us.

He’s also one of the 13 acts announced so far for New York City’s Blip Festival 2009 this December! His upcoming Pamplemousse EP is definitely one to watch out for.

Taito’s sound team Zuntata put out this CD in Japan last month featuring music from the DS game along with a few mixes from other artists. Here’s another remixed song preview from Japanese music collective Norishirocks (with Pepper Shop’s visualization of the album’s cover):
Can you believe Space Invaders Extreme 2 releases in the U.S. in less than two weeks? How did that sneak up on us? Don’t forget to buy a paddle (only available in pink)! Unless you have a DSi. In that case, yeah, forget about it.

I’ve loved the original version of this track since I first heard it in 28 Days Later’s supermarket scene. My wife has made at least one mix CD with “A.M. 180” on it for me, and my hand never fails to find her whenever the song comes on while we’re driving around.
Along with employing this chiptune intro for his one-shot program Gameswipe, British comedian Charlie Brooker apparently uses the song for his regular BBC show Screenwipe — I hade no idea it was so popular across the Atlantic! Anyway, Gameswipe is rad, and you should watch it if you’re interested in seeing British guys making fun of how idiotic some games are. I wrote about the show and even embedded its first 10 minutes here.

Vorc Records has released several more samples from its tribute to Japanese “techno-pop unit” TM Network, which you can pick up at HearJapan. The second track in the above clip, “Telephone Line”, is way smooth, one that I’d put on while making eyes at my lady.
Here’s another 8-bit Prophet sampler set from Vorc Records posted just last week:

This wintry song’s resposeful first half reminds me of Let The Right One In, easily the best film I saw last year (and one of my all-time favorites). I highly suggest you seek out the movie and watch it! It’s a great date film!

In addition to this excellent 8-bit rendition of Guns N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child of Mine,” D-Pad Hero also features similar reimaginings of A-Ha’s “The Swing of Things,” Chicane’s “Low Sun,” Michael Jackson’s “The Way You Make Me Feel,” and Daft Punk’s “Aerodynamic” and “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger.”
You can download and play the ROM on an NES emulator — creators Kent Hansen and Andreas Pedersen suggest using a gamepad instead of your keyboard to play, though. Even with a gamepad, JC described his experience with D-Pad Hero as “hard as fuck.”
Fortunately, there’s also a Listen mode for those of us who just want to enjoy the chiptune music.
