EGG Music: retro game soundtrack downloads →

So, maybe I didn’t know about this, or maybe I did and forgot, but EGG Music is a sort of online record label that sells downloadable soundtracks to old games. It’s run by D4 Enterprise, who also runs the Project EGG MSX download store, and (theoretically) publishes MSX games on Virtual Console.

EGG Music announced today that the soundtrack for Shubibinman 3 is now available. It joins stuff like Monster World, Brandish, the Princess Maker series, and Cho Aniki, which I’m about to try to buy right now. Seriously, guys, if you haven’t heard the music from Cho Aniki, listen to the samples.

The PlayStation Cho Aniki game, Cho Aniki: Kyukyoku Muteki Ginga Saikyou Otoko, is now available on the Japanese PSN, making me really wish I had a damn PS3.

Saikyou Otoko isn’t anywhere near as good a game as the other Cho Anikis, but it manages to be even more of a bizarre novelty due to its use of digitized graphics. That’s right, all the sprites have been replaced by grainy photos of nearly-nude dudes. It’s even more hilariously off-putting in motion than in screens. Check HG101 for more screens, and click here to see the intro sequence.

Cho Aniki concept art →

To promote the PSP release of Rei Cho Aniki, Famitsu put up a special page for the game — basically a big ad. It’s loaded with fairly amazing concept art for the new shooter, including the above excerpt. Where does one arrive at the kind of ‘concepts’ from which Cho Aniki bosses arise? I’m not just talking about the ‘manly’ component — I get the idea of liking dudes, but it’s quite a leap from ‘dudes are great’ to ‘hey, you know what would be a cool boss for this shooter? Giant dude inside a watermelon.’

I like how Adon and Samson follow you up and down the page.

I’m about to move into a new house, so I’m on the lookout for new decorative items for my office — like this Cho Aniki Seinaru Protein Densetsu store display, from NCSX’s eBay shop.

Cho Aniki stuff! →

After I saw NCSX’s announcement of preorders for the PSP Cho Aniki remake (including a special edition with a soundtrack CD, which I very much want), I decided to go poke around developer Extreme’s website. They have a store! In which they sell Cho Aniki stuff!

In addition to this awesome “MUSCLE BROTHERS” shirt, the store offers a plush version of the Uminin mascot character (who appeared in the Cho Aniki games as well as others), and… this towel.

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

Cho Aniki’s Stage 1 theme by Koji Hayama.

The music may not be as widely recognized as some other aspects of Masaya’s PC Engine CD-ROM shmup, but it is just as memorable as anything else about the game.

The whole soundtrack features synthesized voice like this. It was silly the first time I encountered it, and then it grew on me. Now I love it. Just like Cho Aniki!

61 Frames Per Second has a cool weekly column that I’m tempted to steal, Alternate Soundtrack, which replaces a classic game’s tunes with songs from an unrelated band.

In the above video’s case, PC Engine shooter Ai Cho Aniki has been further beefed up with music supplied by indie group Xiu Xiu, with pleasing results.

I don’t think a similar column would be successful here, as I’d likely substitute soundtracks with whatever song I was listening to when I first played the title back in the day. Basically, the audio portion of every featured game would consist of Warren G and Nate Dogg’s “Regulate.”

“Despite having dominated the Galactic Bodybuilding Contest for the past 10 years, the emperor of Planet Builder felt ill at ease.

His home planet’s supply of PROTEIN was running out.”

Excerpt from the premise of Cho Aniki, as described on Hudson’s info page for the game

Who is coming to Virtual Console? →

Oh no, Cho Aniki is coming to Virtual Console! How can that be?

Even though the first game is the least homoerotic in Masaya’s infamous shmup series, the announcement still comes as a total surprise. If Nintendo paid any attention to the Virtual Console, they’d probably fight it! As an avowed fan of weird games, this is what I’ve been campaigning for, much like normal people advocate for Super Mario RPG or something.
