SMH: This isn't the Good People Die web game I was hoping for →

I was excited that Chunsoft posted a web game to promote the looming Japanese release of Good People Die  for 3DS and PS Vita. I remembered that Aksys made an online demo available for the game’s predecessor 999, allowing people to try out an early chapter of the adventure title, so I was hoping for more than that.

That’s not what this is at all! It’s a simple minigame that takes a few minutes to load, and has you clicking as fast as you can to open a gate, so you can rescue Clover/Yotsuba and see her in increasingly skimpy outfits. :o/

It’s not nearly as reprehensible as Hachi Koi’s Tetris clone, but I expected better from Chunsoft.

Plenty of new screenshots from Good People Die, the successor to Chunsoft’s visual novel/adventure game 999, coming to 3DS/PS Vita on February 16 in Japan.

Good People Die takes place in the same world as 999, even featuring some returning characters it seems, but it updates the Nonary Game with an AB (Ambidex) version. Siliconera explains how the AB game works:

“Each player in the game has a bangle attached to them, with BP, which presumably stands for bangle (or bracelet) points. Like in 999, you travel in pairs, and can cooperate with or betray your partner.

AB rooms have a voting machine set up within them, and each pair of participants must make a choice within a time limit. Do you “cooperate” or “betray”? Each choice you choose unlocks a different scenario and, depending on different situations, you’ll see different stories unfold.

The key is to get more than 9BP so you can open the door to escape. On the other hand, if your points fall below 0, you’ll get injected with poison from your bangle and die.”

You can see more Good People Die screenshots and details on the game (if you don’t mind running the page through Google Translate) at this new Famitsu report.

New screenshots of Good People Die, the new nonary game from Chunsoft’s 999 team, coming to Nintendo 3DS and PS Vita. Nothing too revelatory here — the image of the white-haired girl essentially says, “My name is Phi”.

For some discussion on what’s going on with this title, there’s a forum thread over at Court-Records with plenty of speculation on all those weird numbers that appeared in the trailer, the significance of the characters’ names (the protagonist is named Sigma), and what this “Ambidex edition” of the nonary game will entail.

English-annotated trailer for Good People Die, or Gyokugen Dasshutsu Adv: Zennin Shiboudes, the new 3DS/PS Vita game from the Chunsoft group that worked on 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors.

If hints from the initial artwork didn’t give it away, this video all but verifies that Good People Die is related to 999, what with mentions of a nonary game, Zero’s cameo, and the similar music. I wonder what this “Ambidex edition” will entail, though?

Art and screens from Good People Die, the new 3DS/PS Vita visual novel from the Chunsoft group that brought you 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors.

Holy crap, it’s in 3D! And the plot, which centers around nine people who are trapped in a warehouse and are somehow connected to each other, is awfully similar to 999’s. Chunsoft says development on this “game of betrayal” is currently 50 percent complete.

As for whether or not Aksys will bring this Stateside, the official word is that it has “no plans at this time regarding localization,” but a few jokes in the game’s NeoGAF thread from producer Frank deWindt II hint that the company is interested in publishing Good People Die (an awesome title that I fear will be toned down for the U.S.).

999 staff working on new 3DS, Vita game

The Chunsoft team that brought you DS visual novel 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors, which was a bit of a cult hit last year, is working on a new adventure title for 3DS and PS Vita, according to a report from Famitsu.

Titled Gyokugen Dasshutsu Adv: Zennin Shiboudes, or Extreme Escape Adventure: Good People Die (similar to 999’s Japanese title), the project and its scenario is once again helmed by Kotaro Uchikoshi, while Kinu Nishimura will return to handle the character designs.

Several notable voice actors will lend their talents to this fully voiced project, too, including Akio Otsuka, Yukari Tamura, Chiaki Omigawa, and Rie Kugimiya.

I have a feeling 999 sales far exceeded Aksys’ expectations, what with the multiple print runs needed to keep up with demand, so don’t be surprised if the publisher announces this for the States somewhere down the line!

Dramatic reading of a 999 press release, by Aksys Games’ Ben Bateman. Though it would make my workday a lot longer, I am in favor of having more press releases presented to me in this manner. It’s definitely the only time I’ll ever post an unaltered press release on TC.

This is, perhaps, the best use yet (the only use?) of Cozy Fire, the second WiiWare fireplace app.

999 watch bundle back in stock →

If you’re ready to check out Chunsoft’s shockingly well-received DS “sound novel” 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors, good news! Aksys is once again offering bundles containing the DS game and a replica of the odd-looking watch featured in the game — which, in real life, is a lot heavier than it looks (it’s pretty much solid die cast metal!). It’s $36.99, and it’ll probably sell out soon. This is the best deal you’re going to get on a game-and-watch-you-could-break-someone’s-jaw-with package.

In other DS deal news, the Dragon Quest Slime Speaker Stand is now down to $20.58 at Amazon, a price at which the accessory is very nearly irresistible. I know because I’m trying to resist it.

Zombie Daisuki wallpapers for smartphones. These are designed for iPhone 4, but would also look great on previous iPhones, Palm Pre, Android, or whatever. You have your choice of four adorable blue zombies over which to display your icons!

Now I need to make a ringtone of Smileage’s song from the commercial. That started out as a joke, but now I really want to do that. I haven’t changed my ringtone since I found the ringtone version of the Steel Samurai theme from Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney!
