Special “Chotto Mario” 3DSes (click for larger images), sent to Japan’s Club Nintendo members this week who registered two 3DS games over the holiday and had their names pulled from a raffle. Nintendo made only 1,000 systems for each of the three designs.
As our commentors note, Europe and Australia have a similar lottery set up, where you need to register two select games to enter. And North America gets… nothing.

Nintendo’s Facebook page features a contest for the new 3DS Card Case 18. Send in a photo of yourself and your favorite Club Nintendo prize, with a note about why you love Club Nintendo (there’s pretty much just the one reason, right?) and you could win one of the cases.
After seeing this, Eric and I got super suspicious. What’s going on with this case? Nintendo is promoting this one thing way more than it ever has with previous rewards, including sending review samples to the press (like us, and JC Fletcher of Joystiq.com). And now there’s this contest, which someone had to put a non-zero amount of time into putting together.
It’s a really nice item, but is that the only reason for the media blitz? I don’t have any answers; I’m just wondering out loud about this sudden shift in policy. WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

While we get these four inserts in the U.S., the Japanese version of the 18-cart holder comes with three random slips pulled from a wider selection that includes our covers and the ones above. Dat Pikmin cover.

It’s already rad that this thing is almost the same size as a standard DS/3DS case (just a bit thicker) and holds up to 18 cartridges, but it also comes with four different sheets — including one with that awesome Nintendo Conference 2011 vector art — that you can slip in and use as a cover.
They have inside art, too, which shows artwork or icons in spaces you haven’t filled with games. For those wondering if you can use these with standard 3DS cases, I tested it and they fit in fine, but you can’t see the inside art through the eco-friendly holes in the plastic.

Club Nintendo halves free game offerings. I was impressed that Nintendo was giving away a free game for each of its download platforms (eShop, DSiWare, WiiWare, Virtual Console) through its U.S. reward program during the past couple of months, but this time around it only has two titles available.
If you’ve registered enough games with Club Nintendo to earn 150 coins, you’ll be able to pick up Art Academy: First Semester for DSiWare (but only downloadable for 3DS owners) and Mario Party 2 for Virtual Console. It’s difficulty to justify arguing with free games, but neither of these are terribly exciting, and we’ve been spoiled by Club Nintendo’s recent selections.
At least now you can get this snazzy game case that we’ve written about before for 250 Coins.

Club Nintendo (U.S.) updated its selection of downloadable games, which you can grab by trading in the coins you receive from registering titles you’ve purchased.
The new rewards include Kirby’s Dream Land (3DS Virtual Console), Dr. Mario Express (DSiWare), Dr. Mario Online RX (Wii), and The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask (Wii Virtual Console), all available until January 31, when Nintendo will introduce a new set of games.

Nintendo 3DS Card Case 18, a new Club Nintendo prize in Japan (150 points) that holds up to 18 tiny cartridges.
Yes, there are plenty of accessories like this already, but this one reuses that great vector art from Nintendo Conference 2011 — plus it will fit on your shelf with the rest of your DS and 3DS game boxes.
Another goodie for Japanese Club Nintendo members: a gold Nunchuk to go along with your limited edition gold Wii Remote that game with your Skyward Sword set.
Before those of you in the U.S. complain about how we never get anything great on Club Nintendo, the redesigned site launched today and now allows you to redeem points for eShop, DSiWare, WiiWare, and VC games!

You can buy select downloadable games with Club Nintendo points now! Well, not now exactly, as North America’s Club Nintendo site is down for maintenance, but as this screengrab shows, you can soon choose to spend your points on a handful of first-party eShop, DSiWare, Virtual Console (on Wii), and WiiWare releases.
The initial selection includes the following:
The games are chosen based on Club Nintendo member feedback, and are replaced with “a new surprise selection each month”. This is an obvious idea that I always assumed Nintendo would never implement because it’s too awesome, but here it is! The only problem is now I’ll never save enough points to get a Game & Watch: Ball.
In other digital download news, Pushmo is out on the eShop today or $6.99! Grab that shiz.

I’m not even being sarcastic, either. This game looks awesome with even static backgrounds. I’m genuinely impressed. They look kind of better than the NES could do, giving it a PC Engine-esque look. I’m so down for this.
If you’re in Europe, and you buy and register two select 3DS games between now and January 31, you’ll get this for free! In fact, just like Japan’s offer, this news is accompanied by a Club Nintendo giveaway of Mario-themed 3DS systems. When you register those two games, you’ll be entered!

It’s pretty cool that we’re getting some new stuff that isn’t straight from the Japanese site. Those shoelaces are pretty wonderful, and you get both the white and yellow sets for your 300 coins.
The t-shirt is 500 coins, if you want that t-shirt.
Man, am I really thinking about spending my fake money on some Mario shoelaces? I’m pretty sure I’d be humiliatingly worried about ruining my limited-edition mail-order shoelaces by getting them dirty, so maybe not.

The other gifts include the usual desk calendar, and your choice of two out of five soundtracks, including Tomodachi Collection, Pilotwings Resort, Star Fox 64 3D, Wii Fit Plus, and Mario Kart Wii.

The Game Boy Light is missing from the series, but other than that, the only cards I didn’t include here are those for the Game Boy Pocket and DSi XL — due to Tumblr’s 10-image gallery limitation.
You can trade in 300 Points to get these and a neat pouch from Club Nintendo in North America:
“Take a trip down memory lane with this collection of cards detailing Nintendo’s 30-plus year handheld history — from the Game & Watch series in 1980 to the Nintendo 3DS system in 2011.”
Virtual Boy gets no love because it’s more of a portable (kind of) than a handheld. Also, it’s the Virtual Boy.
