We recently asked our readers to “describe Balrog” for a chance to win a Mac App Store copy of Cave Story +. We got tons of fun responses, because you’re all brilliant, but in the end we did the terrible duty of reducing the list down to five winners, to whom we’ve handed out the codes. Huzzah, etc. Here’s who we picked:
Axel described Balrog as “an Altoids tin who only comes in one flavor: bumbling.”
wuuds said “Balrog is the craziest enemy I’ve ever fought. I mean the guy wears suspenders over his eyes… WITHOUT PANTS! I still have nightmares…”
Blue gave us the paradox of Balrog: A bar of soap that’ll make your hands dirty. A lunchbox that’ll leave you hungry. A briefcase that’ll get you fired. A suitcase that’ll leave you shivering in the cold. A hollow brick that’ll cause your house to tumble. A broken drive that you decided to for some unfathomable reason to pop into your OS. What did it say? Well, what did you expect?”
How does Chris Kraft know? “Balrog pees sitting down and poops standing up.”
Congrats to the five of you, thanks to Nicalis for the generous offer of prizes, and “stay tuned” or whatever you do to a website for more opportunities to win this game!
Nicalis has offered us five codes for Cave Story+, its updated Mac release of Cave Story based on the WiiWare version. Would you like to welcome fall with a nostalgic trip through Pixel’s masterpiece? Doesn’t that sound comforting, like a cool breeze coming in on a warm day? (Not that I’d know, we haven’t really had “cool” anything here in Austin in months…)
We’re giving away five copies of Cave Story+ this week, from now until Friday at 11:59PM EDT. All you have to do to win, is go into the comments section of this post, and … describe Balrog. We’ll pick our favorites and dispense codes. Good luck, and thanks to Nicalis for the generosity!
So, a few weeks ago we basically bribed a bunch of our readers to say nice things about Tiny Cartridge, offering everyone free games and merch in exchange for lies about how much they love this site. What can I say, it was our third birthday, and we needed some reassurance.
Anyway, here are the best liars winners we picked!
Are you convinced that you need to own a copy of Bit.Trip Complete (Wii) after seeing yesterday’s poignant trailer? Or maybe the promise of portability in the 3DS release has you committed to Bit.Trip Saga? Both versions have their advantages — if only there was a way to acquire both without spending too much cash.
Well, as usual, we have the answer to all your problems*. We have partnered with our sponsor Aksys to hold a fanart competition, and will be giving two winners copies of both Bit.Trip Saga and Complete. Details after the break!
Custom Heroes of Ruin 3DS featuring an elephant gray shell and branding from n-Space’s Torchlight-esque action RPG (with four-player online co-op!).
To mark the launch of the game’s official site, n-Space announced a contest to give away this one-off system to a random person who registers at the community page and fills in an entry form before July 31st.
When we last talked about this promising title, connectivity features with the online hub were mentioned:
“[The] community website will reward players further with daily challenges and quests available to complete in-game. With social media functionality, the site will also give players a platform to meet other gamers, swap ideas and items and team-up in-game.”
So, if you plan on picking this up, you’ll probably want to register at the Heroes of Ruin site anyway!
No, I don’t mean women who are part grasshopper. Please don’t draw that, and if you do, don’t show me.
Our awesome pal Matt “Fort90” Hawkins has teamed up with Grasshopper Manufacture and Jap-Sai to give away lots of rad Grasshopper swag to the person who sends him the best fanart of any female character from a GHM game.
He explains, “Not gonna lie: I’m mostly interested in NMH babes, though I’d like to believe that game provides the greatest variety of potential subjects, so no one feels too constricted.” Check the site for image size and format requirements.
So what do you stand to get for your efforts? Only way too much fucking stuff, including the NMH2 “Erotica Comic,” two portrait postcard books, the Japanese guidebook for No More Heroes: Heroes’ Paradise, a copy of the rare Hand in Killer7 book,Bizarre Jerry 5, “Hellride,” Flower, Sun, & Rain t-shirts, and Cory Schmitz’s Killer 7 t-shirt (not having any of these shirts makes me wonder where my life went wrong).
You have until May 1 to prepare your entries. Fair warning: you’ll have to compete with me, and my artwork might just be sad enough to win out of pity.
How to apply the Keys Factory Screen Guard Plus for 3DS. Thanks to the clever D-pad guide thing and the adhesive tab on the right side, this looks way easier to apply than the arcane Hori Screen Protective Filter — though I’m happy in both cases for this trend of video guides.
It’s also way easy to get one of these Screen Guard Plus covers for yourself — by retweeting, reblogging, or liking our DS Dates contest post! Only once, please, we don’t want to be responsible for a spam outbreak.
You have until midnight PST tonight! Go! We want to put plastic sheets on your screeeeeens!
Our DS Dates giveaway for a couple free Nintendo 3DS screen protectors was supposed to end last night, but we realize that we didn’t promote it enough this week, and that the release of Raekwon’s new album yesterday probably distracted people from the contest.
As part of our efforts to insinuate our DS Dates spinoff site into everyone’s online experience, we’re holding another easy contest and giving away multiple Keys Factory screen guards (with the handy applicator guide!).
As many of gamers have learned in the past, screen guards are essential for ensuring that your DS/DSi touchscreens don’t get scratched up. The same will be true with the Nintendo 3DS — as the Wu-Tang Clan/Rza once rapped, “Ain’t a damn thing changed, boy, protect ya screen”.
Check after the break for details on how to win one!
If you still have yet to follow DS Dates on Tumblr, Twitter, or Facebook , I suggest you go do that right now! Through midnight EST tonight, following our new spinoff site on any of those services will enter you for a free copy of Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective.
And unlike the characters in that game, once this offer expires, there will be no jumping backward in time and manipulating a room full of objects to bring it back. So enter today! As a bonus, you’ll be able to keep up with new DS/3DS releases and deals…
With last week’s launch of DS Dates, our new spin-off project tracking DS/3DS releases and discounts, we kicked off a contest to trap our fans into following the site.
Until February 15 midnight, anyone who “follows” DS Dates on Tumblr, Twitter, or Facebook will be entered to win a free copy of Capcom’s excellent adventure game Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective.
You can enter multiple times by following the site on multiple services, and the contest is open to readers from all countries (which hopefully does a little to make up for DS Dates being a North America-only site for now).
We hope to make contests like this on DS Dates a weekly thing, so please keep an eye on the site!
Okamiden’s U.S. and JP boxarts compared, preorder items revealed. If you reserve this DS follow-up to Okamithrough GameStop, you’ll receive a paintbrush stylus and screen cleaner when it releases this March 15th.
And if you already have enough branded bonuses accumulated from six years of Nintendo DS purchases, you can probably pick it up from Amazon without all that stuff and for a buck or two cheaper.
Capcom is also running a contest in which you can win Okamiden, a Nintendo 3DS (!), Chibiterasu plushies, and more when you try out its Goblin Mask Facebook app.
