Well, you could always decorate your portable to make it look like this. It’s much cheaper, anyway!

Custom Heroes of Ruin 3DS featuring an elephant gray shell and branding from n-Space’s Torchlight-esque action RPG (with four-player online co-op!).
To mark the launch of the game’s official site, n-Space announced a contest to give away this one-off system to a random person who registers at the community page and fills in an entry form before July 31st.
When we last talked about this promising title, connectivity features with the online hub were mentioned:
“[The] community website will reward players further with daily challenges and quests available to complete in-game. With social media functionality, the site will also give players a platform to meet other gamers, swap ideas and items and team-up in-game.”
So, if you plan on picking this up, you’ll probably want to register at the Heroes of Ruin site anyway!
Preorder: Heroes of Ruin
Find: Nintendo DS/3DS release dates, discounts, & more

[Thanks, Ray!]

Custom microfiber cloths printed out by NeoGAFfer and placed in between a 3DS’s two screens to prevent scratches when the system is closed (click for a larger image).
The latest concern among 3DS owners is the possibility of the raised bottom screen’s ridges scratching the top screen when they’re pressed together. It’s a very real concern, as I’ve often noticed marks on my own handheld from the ridges (that I can rub away), though they haven’t caused any permanent damage yet.
I have a Keys Factory screen protector set on the way — as do the two winners of our recent “Protect Ya Screen” giveaway — so I expect that will help prevent any future issues. Other gamers are placing microfiber cloths, custom bumpers, and even AR cards for scratch protection.
I’m unsure how widespread this problem is, but I hope Nintendo takes steps to fix the flaw for those affected.

Custom painted Mega Man Super Nintendo at New York Comic Con (click for a larger image). That’s a pretty neat system, but $75? I think I’d rather have a Mini SNES…
Speaking of the blue guy and SNES, did you guys see this video for Mega Man X’s “unused map editor”?

If I owned one of those, I would need to further modify it by replacing the console’s startup chime with Blanka’s cheer from Street Fighter II whenever he won a match.

Custom Professor Layton DS Lite engraved by Pablo Leal (click for a larger image). You can contact the artist to commission an engraving, but I doubt it’s cheap!

Tentacle DSi, a simple but cool customization for a white DSi by Dan Pickens (click for a larger image).
The artist wanted to buy a silver system but received a white handheld instead: “When I got it, it was white. How bland. I saw a canvas. So, I painted tentacles on it to mirror my love of the Eldritch Cthulhu mythos.”
Some paint rubbed off the DSi during Pickens’ deployment in Iraq, but I’m sure that’s easily fixed!

Buzzardbarf used acrylic paint to give his handheld this metal texture, and also place a rectangle cardboard panel on the console’s lid to “rivet” it and hide the DS logo.
Kind of related: have you ever listened to any music from Dirty On Purpose? They’re not a bad band! I saw them live like six years ago at a small show where they opened for Asobi Seksu, and they were totally the highlight of the night. The songs on their MySpace page are pretty great to listen to when you’re up late and just dicking around the internet, looking at photos of modded DSes.

Custom Noby Noby Boy and Katamari Damacy PSP-3000. I have no idea where this grainy image came from, but I spotted it in Fort90’s latest round-up of alternative gaming news/media. I wouldn’t mind owning this, though the (cute) faces and lines painted on the screen would make it hard to actually play games with the system.
[Update: Brandon, who posted the photos combo, pointed out in the comments that Katamari/NNB creator Keita Takahashi himself painted the PSP for a giveaway.]

I’m uncertain about they story behind these systems, but they were displayed at the Video Games Live concert in Paris last month.
They all look great, but the sparkle-decorated handheld with the teal and purple Link artwork is banoodles.

Mooninites invade a Nintendo DSi, armed with a boombox. I usually advise against attaching stickers onto your handheld, especially after seeing Daphaknee’s irreparable DS, but Thretris’ personalized Matte Blue system looks slick — even if the Mooninites are so 2002.
Unfortunately, this suffer the common defect of appearing upside down when you flip the lid open. The stickers look vinyl, though, so it’s easily fixable with some rearranging.
