“Contrary to the wishes of two or three guys on the Internets, we’re not just going to rip through games we love just to put out sub-par versions no one is happy playing (that’ll give said trolls more reason to bitch).

I’m much happier hearing a few guys complain about our games ‘coming out in 2015-2020’, then have something out there that one of our developer friends or I’m happy to release.”

Nicalis delivers real talk while also announcing a delay of Ikachan for DSiWare, until 2012.

So what’s the developer doing with the extra time? “First, the artwork is being redone from scratch by Daisuke [Pixel].” New enemies and a new, larger play area are also being added. The team is making a new localization, too, replacing the fan translation in the English PC version.

I’m sure most of us will have plenty to play for the rest of the year even without this game. Maybe not on DSiWare, but everywhere else — certainly on DS cards. This game would get super lost in holiday 2011.

Surprise! Cave Story+ out for Mac

Out of nowhere, Nicalis has released Cave Story+, an enhanced port of last year’s WiiWare remake, to the Mac App Store (Windows release on Steam forthcoming).

Along with the upgraded “HD” graphics, remastered soundtrack, official re-translation, and bonus modes, Cave Story+ adds the Wind Fortress level, the first original area designed from scratch by Daisuke ‘Pixel’ Amaya since the original PC release. This version also has USB gamepad support, and will receive future content updates.

I wonder if Wind Fortress will make it into the upcoming 3DS remake? Anyway, you can download Cave Story+ right now for $9.99 — more screenshots after the break!

New Cave Story 3D screens show the options for the bottom screen. As of now, you can see a cool-looking map of the room you’re in, or an inventory screen, on the “PXL-001” computer. Cute!

The screens also give you a look at the redrawn weapon icons — a pretty subtle change that might get overlooked because of the less subtle change of all the graphics. Nicalis now has time to make some more changes — publisher NIS America announced yesterday that the game was delayed until November 8.

Cave Story 3D trailer with 2.5+ minutes of new gameplay clips. The Sand Zone environment doesn’t stand out for me, but the Egg Corridor and Waterway scenes show a very different and much better looking game than what we saw in the remake’s initial screenshots. Also, we get to hear more of Danny Baranowsky’s “Bushlands” remix!

Did you read JC’s Cave Story 3D preview from E3, by the way? It’s full of reassuring notes like this:

“Nicalis had been paying attention to the reaction to those first images, and is working to make something that reinterprets the environments of the retro-style original in a more palatable — and more parsable — way. It is not ruined by the 3D graphics.”

Sounds great! Worryingly, though, two retailers recently updated their listings for Cave Story 3D to indicate a release date long after its scheduled August 9 launch…

Fresh Cave Story 3D screens take us through Sand Zone and Egg Corridor. Many gamers have been denouncing this game so far based on early shots, but the remixed soundtrack is on point, this latest image set looks great, and impressions popping up online are positive.

From Nintendo Life’s new preview:

“For anyone that’s seen the various screenshots of Cave Story 3D, you need to toss those out of your mind because you can’t truly appreciate the game’s amazing visual presentation until you’ve seen it for yourself.

Once you witness the game in motion and with the full 3D depth in place, then you’ll begin to appreciate just how beautiful the game truly is. Worlds that were once familiar to you from past releases come alive onscreen in a way never before seen.”

Okay, that almost sounds like an NIS America marketer penned that, but maybe it really was that good?

Snippet of Cave Story’s “Bushlands” theme remixed by Danny Baranowsky for the upcoming 3DS remake. That beat drop toward the end of this sample is soooo fresh.

Those of you familiar with indie games will recognize Baranowsky’s work from titles like Super Meat Boy, Canabalt, and many other releases. As much as I love Daisuke Amaya’s original and very catchy soundtrack, I can’t wait to hear all the new Cave Story 3D arrangements from Baranowsky and Dustin Kulwicki.

Cave Story 3D looks much better in motion. In this demonstration posted by GameSpot and explained by NIS America, we’re treated to the first gameplay video of the upcoming remake. It doesn’t have the charm of the original 2D visuals (hopefully an option in the final game), but it’s prettier than the screens we saw two weeks ago.

As producer Jack Niida mentions, while the stereoscopic 3D effects aren’t visible in this YouTube video, you can see how the environments take advantage of this feature, attempting to offer a more immersive experience.

Secret song in Cave Story WiiWare. If you loaded the game yesterday, which was creator Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya’s 34th birthday, you would have been treated to this special music track on the title screen. You can hear this pleasant tune if you set your system date back a day, too.

By the way, did you know the upcoming Cave Story 3DS remake will feature new arrangements by Dustin Kulwicki and Danny Baranowsky (Canabalt, Super Meat Boy)? Very neat! Hopefully, the game has an option for the old soundtrack and 2D visuals for those who prefer the classic style.

Early Cave Story 3D boxart found on Gamefly. Quote seems to have misplaced his mouth between here and the concept art! Nicalis has already said that this isn’t the final boxart. Gamefly also has a June 30 release date down, but that’s even less likely to be final!

In other, more substantial Cave Story news, Nicalis’s Tyrone Rodriguez tweeted last night about playing a new Pixel-created level called “Wind Fortress.” A new level!

Cave Story remake coming to 3DS

If you haven’t gotten enough Cave Story from the original PC version, the WiiWare port, and the recent DSiWare release, Nicalis has another project in the works for the revered indie game: a new 2.5D remake for the 3DS!

Nicalis and Cave Story creator Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya have teamed up with NIS America to release a new version of the game with 3D graphics (though still presented as a side-scrolling, Metroidvania-type game), stereoscopic 3D effects, remixed music by a mystery composer, and some new content this summer.
