bit Generations-esque Art Style covers by Stephen Gibson (click for a larger version).

“The Art Style series on DSi is the perfect follow-up to the bit Generations series. The one thing that didn’t make the jump to digital distribution though was the stylish little boxes that each game came in. I decided to try and create artwork for each of the new games, following the same structure and style of the bit Generations boxes.

And yes, these are the Japanese logos. Since the original packages were Japan-only (and half of these aren’t out in the US and Europe yet), I decided to use those to begin. I’ll put together some Western variations soon.”

The deviantArt watermark is distracting, but other than that, these are great, very much like the original minimalist bit Generations covers.

[Update: Stephen removed the watermark! Yay!]

In other Art Style news, apparently Nalaku released in Europe as Kubos last week. What’s the deal with Europe having five (out of six) Art Style titles, while the U.S. only has two? At this rate, autumn will arrive before North America receives Hacolife.

Mini Phantasy Star coming to DSiWare →

Sega will release Phantasy Star Zero Mini, a condensed RPG experience, to the DSi’s download service in Japan later this month for only 200 Nintendo Points!

“This downloadable version of last year’s Phantasy Star Zero (available only in Japan at present) consists of a score attack where players select from three characters and attempt to defeat a creature known as Raven. Just like its big cartridge brother, the game will support four player wireless play and a ‘visual chat’ hand drawn messaging service.”

In other DSiWare news, Siliconera uncovered an Australian classification listing for a game called D-Code (not to be confused with Juvenile’s lackluster 1999 rap album Tha G Code), indicating a potential worldwide release for Skip’s Art Style puzzle game Decode. Maybe Nintendo will also bring HacoLife and PiCOPiCT stateside?

Six minutes of Art Style: Decode.

Quite an odd puzzle game from Skip! Apparently, you flip LCD numbers and pick out groups that add up to 10. YouTube user NintenDaan has several more video previews of Nintendo’s new DSiWare releases, like Art Style: Aquario and Pyoro.

Strangely, most major gaming sites have hardly given DSiWare’s launch any coverage; you would think that they’d scramble to write about a console’s new game download service!

Perhaps everyone has been distracted by the holiday? Or maybe it’s just hard to care about budget-looking games released for a system that isn’t available in the West yet.
