Zombie BBQ shoots up U.S. DSiWare

I don’t know how the studio managed it, but Gammick is bringing its unconventional shoot’em-up Little Red Riding Hood’s Zombie BBQ to the U.S. DSiWare service.

The game originally came out with a retail release in North America way back in October 2008 but debuted in Europe via DSiWare a year later. From what I’ve head, Nintendo discourages companies from republishing full cart games on DSiWare, but since Zombie BBQ was never available in European stores, an exception was made.

Nintendo has apparently made another exception for the fairy tale-based shmup in the States, too, as the full game is slated to come here some time for just 800 Points. The release will include all 21 levels, 10 bosses, three difficulty options, and three game modes.

Here’s an old trailer for Zombie BBQ:

Stuff we liked in 2008: Little Red Riding Hood’s Zombie BBQ

We were so enamored with Little Red Riding Hood’s Zombie BBQ, we wrote almost 20 posts about the campy, fairy tale-themed shoot’em-up this year! The only other games that received anything close to that amount of coverage were Mega Man 9 and Wonder Pets.

Three details that are fab:

  1. Red’s Spanish accent (the game’s publisher and developer are based in Barcelona).
  2. Near constant stream of enemies, obstacles, and mini-bosses to (sexy) dodge and blast.
  3. Creative and challenging boss fights — one stage has you drifting down a canal in Venice, following and fighting a giant zombie Pinocchio.

Three details that are butt:

  1. Beating Zombie BBQ under the “Normal” difficulty mode unlocks none of the extra modes.
  2. With all the menus and animated sequences, it takes way too long to jump back into a saved game.
  3. For such a wacky game, there’s not a single laugh to be found in the script.

The number at the end of the review:

  • Zombies Ate My Review Score

Animal Boxing is out this week, so it seemed like as good a time as any to share this trailer. The whole turning-the-DS-upside-down thing is a neat idea, and sounds good on paper, but it sort of makes my head spin. It just feels wrong, like stolen candy and horse porn.

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

Continuing with today’s unintentional musical theme: I got a review copy of Zombie BBQ today and decided to capture the first level’s music for you. I had to do some messing around with the file, because I paused the game as soon as I could, causing the BGM volume to drop.

In-game, this theme has to compete with zombie moans and hundreds of explosions. We’ll have more impressions soon!

Zombie Santa doesn’t want your damn cookies

Celebrate Halloween — and the release of our beloved Zombie BBQ — with, uh, Santa Claus. Or some sort of fusion of Santa, violence, and robosleigh. And also some screens and other art, clearly at IGN. Listen, I wouldn’t link you to just any random set of IGN images. I’m not that girl. This is special.

See also: We talk to some dudes about barbecuing, zombie speed, and gameplay (part one and part two).

Tiny Q&A: Zombie BBQ’s Gammick and EnjoyUp, part 2

In Part 2 of our interview with Gammick and EnjoyUp, we cover some of their other works, along with a bit about the companies themselves. But we can’t let one bit of info about Zombie BBQ pass without comment: IGN’s review is in — 8.6!

What is the current status of Chronos Twin? It was rated by the ESRB but has yet to appear in the US. Is it cancelled?

EnjoyUp: Crave Entertainment has the publishing rights for US. They are working on its release. We hope that it will be on American shelves soon.

What lessons did your team learn during the development of Chronos Twin that helped the production of Zombie BBQ?

EU: We have learned how to have better control over the gameplay and the strategy. This can be perfectly seen with the boss fights that the consumer will find in Zombie BBQ. They aren’t just about shooting, as every boss will act in different ways. Of course, all the shooter elements of Chronos Twin were useful for us, as we applied and improved them for Zombie BBQ.

How do you feel Spanish-developed titles differ from games developed in other regions (U.S., Japan)?

EU: Being compared with territories like U.S. or Japan means Spain is in the initial stages of earning respect as game development territory. This makes it more challenging and interesting. The money that companies invest on this is much smaller, so we’re making competitive titles for the current market with the fewer resources. The development of Zombie BBQ in US or in Japan would have cost three or four times more.

As for Animal Boxing, was it always conceived as an upside-down DS game? Are there any other games in development that use the DS this way?

Jose M. Iniguez: When I design a game, I always try to find things that will catch the attention of the people. Something original, different. When I designed Animal Boxing I figured out that in a boxing match, they always hit on the top part of the body and that´s how it came to my mind to turn the console upside down. Answering to your question, it was decided from the very beginning. In Gammick Studios) we plan everything. Random means problems and a more expensive development.

Tiny Q&A: Zombie BBQ’s Gammick and EnjoyUp

If you’ve accidentally glanced at Tiny Cartridge for even a second, you know that we’re fascinated with Gammick/EnjoyUp’s Little Red Riding Hood’s Zombie BBQ. Our interview with the EnjoyUp collective and Gammick producer Jose M. Iniguez covers the details, influences, and development of Zombie BBQ. Part 2 can be found here.

What distinguishes Zombie BBQ from other horror/fairy tale-themed Nintendo DS shooters?

Jose M. Iniguez, Gammick: There are no games for Nintendo DS as crazy and with such a bizarre concept as Little Red Riding Hood’s Zombie BBQ. They way of mixing two separate genres like zombies and fairy tales and distorting everything with a touch of humor makes the game unique.

Why include “BBQ” in the title?

JI: As you can imagine it means, literally, barbecue. Since the flamethrower is the strongest weapon in the game, Little Red Riding Hood and Momotaro can roast zombie flesh in a matter of seconds!

What are the inspirations behind Zombie BBQ’s gameplay?

JI and EnjoyUp: Space Invaders and Cabal are the main inspirations for the gameplay.

What is the average playtime for Zombie BBQ? How many levels are there?

EU: Zombie BBQ has around eight hours of gameplay. The action is divided into seven worlds, with two levels each and a final boss. There are some secrets to be discovered as well.

Are there extra modes? Anything outside the main “campaign?”

EU: Of course! There is a Boss Attack mode, where you have to fight directly against all the bosses of the game without dying, and Survival Mode, where you have to fry as many zombies as you can kill before dying. There are two extra difficulty levels as well.

Momotaro is a character from Japanese tradition. Are there other Japanese elements in the game? If not, why Momotaro? And were any other fable characters considered?

JI: One of the levels of the game happens in Tokyo, far away from the classic fairy tales. We wanted to make the craziest and funniest game for Nintendo DS. The main reason [we used] Momotaro as the secondary playable character is that he is a very well known Japanese fairy tale character. He marks the difference from the classic fairy tales world that we all know. We want this game out in Asia as well, and this will help as well.

Where do you fall in the fast zombies/slow zombies debate that has sprung up since 28 Days Later?

JI: I like both, actually. You can make good use of each kind of zombie. You just need to place them in the best situation and scenario.

EU: I equally enjoy 28 Days Later and Dawn of the Dead. If I had to find myself surrounded by zombies, slow ones are my choice, though.

Only one of the ‘Three Little Pigs’ has fallen to the zombie epidemic. What role do the other two pigs play? If they aren’t zombies, why are they out to kill Red?

JI: Initially, we designed their level so the player would fight with the three of them … like a level with three final bosses. But we didn’t want to kill all the fairy tale characters in a single row. We are saving some for the next Zombie BBQ … already in process.

What are your expectations for Zombie BBQ? What will make it a success?

JI: Destineer is doing fantastic work for the American market with our title. The whole company is excited with the way things are going. The mix between competitive price & original concept is explosive, and we are sure that this game will be a hit on Nintendo DS.

The concept is the key to the success for Zombie BBQ. The bizarre idea of mixing the different worlds as zombies & fairy tales is what everybody is amazed by and the main reason why everybody is talking about the game.

Of course, Little Red Riding Hood’s sexy dodge is helping a lot. ;-)

Why choose the DS for Zombie BBQ?

JI: The Nintendo DS market is completely deformed and artificially oriented to the “supercasualgirly” style, but we understand that there are consumers who bought a Nintendo DS that want something other than take care of a pet, cook or learning languages. They want action, they want to have fun, and this game is perfect for those players.

Tiny Contest: Totally Thematic Halloween Edition

For the latest Tiny Contest, we’ve decided to offer two prizes that each correspond to one aspect of the full Halloween experience. One winner will receive a Zombie BBQ poster, measuring about 24” x 36”, which represents the oooh scary part.

The other winner will receive a Game Boy Color-style DS Lite pouch, handmade by Etsy crafter janis13. It’s basically a Halloween costume for your DS, except that unlike the Beetlejuice suit I wore when I was 8, it’s perfectly appropriate for everyday use.

As usual, all you need to win are your (real, not just ‘GIMME STUFF’) comments.  Starting now and ending at 11:59 PM CST Tuesday, October 21, every comment you make on this and upcoming posts will enter you for these prizes. Commenting on this post counts as one entry, and on any post after this counts as two.

Little Red Riding Hood’s Zombie BBQ’s eponymous heroine in a dress several sizes too small for her.

The slits on the side of her outfit are much, much too high — what would her poor, sick grandmother think? Oh, that’s right, granny has turned into a zombie along with the other fairy tale enemies in this shoot’em-up.

IGN posted five game videos not too long ago, and the “intro movie,” in particular, is worth watching. I love how it begins with spent bullet casings falling like cherry blossom leaves. The in-game clips seem slow, but I hope that’s due to the movies showing only the first stage.

More exclusive art from a Gammick/Destineer title, this time Animal Boxing, the game that will turn your DS upside down! (No, really, you have to turn your DS upside down to play it.)

Exclusive new Little Red Riding Hood’s Zombie BBQ concept art, courtesy of Destineer. I’m not exactly sure what role these guys will play in the game, but my first guess would be that you shoot at them with guns.

It would seem that Tiny Cartridge is slowly turning into a de facto Zombie BBQ fansite. This is quite okay with me.
