More about Fire Emblem: IF’s different versions ⊟

As we’ve mentioned in the past, the next Fire Emblem for 3DS will release in Japan with two distinct versions, both with different storylines and sides you can ally with (A third storyline will be made available as DLC as well. I’m seeing people refer to this as a neutral path?). We knew the White Kingdom edition lets you fight alongside the Hoshido faction and promises a more straightforward, easier experience – great if your first taste of the series was Awakening – but we’ve just learned more about the Black Kingdom release!

If you choose to play with the Nohr faction, you’ll face more challenging stages, picking up less money and fewer experience points. You will also have to deal with more difficult requirements (e.g. breaking through enemy lines and defending an area) and sometimes limited turns for completing maps.

“Of course the story will be completely different, but there will also be major differences in the maps and the way the game is played,” said Intelligent Systems project manager Masahiro Higuchi in an interview with 4gamer translated by Siliconera. “The games are being made so that you can feel satisfied by playing just one, but I believe that if you were to play both, you would be rather surprised at their differences.”

The digital version that will release to the eShop in Japan is a single game, allowing you to play until the fifth chapter before choosing a side and downloading that path. In both the digital and physical editions, you can purchase and download the other storyline(s). Nintendo hasn’t discussed how it will handle the different versions in the West when the strategy RPG releases next year (Japan gets the game this June). Credit to Djyoshi25 for the image!

Masahiro Sakurai on the “DLC scam” ⊟

The Super Smash Bros. series director is referring to a very specific kind of downloadable content in this quote from his column with Famitsu, translated by Source Gaming. Here he’s discussing DLC released immediately after a game’s launch, typically content developed alongside the primary release.

Sakurai notes that his team took a different approach when creating DLC fighters like Mewtwo and Lucas for release many months after launch:

“We could have easily reserved a few characters on the current roster and later sold them as premium DLC. A considerable amount of work went into development, and the game would have already featured a ton of content. Plus, if you were looking to make a profit, DLC would be the way to go. Development is more costly than ever, yet the price of games has remained the same, so more income would help offset that imbalance.

However, the DLC we are releasing for Sm4sh is authentic, developed only after we finished working on the main game.”

If you registered both of your Wii U and 3DS copies of Super Smash Bros. with Club Nintendo, don’t forget to check your email today for a Mewtwo download code! If you didn’t, then, uh, sorry? I am familiar with those particular feels.

Guess we’re importing Fire Emblem cards now ⊟

During a livestreamed presentation about Intelligent Systems’ upcoming trading card game for Fire Emblem (Japan-only so far), the developer and Nintendo announced that starter packs will include download codes that unlock Marth (“Shadow Dragon Chapter” deck) and Lucina (“Awakening Chapter” deck) in upcoming 3DS game Fire Emblem IF. And the card game’s Booster boxes will have DLC codes for Pegasus Knight Minerva. Pics via Serenes Forest.

The game releases this June, and will eventually receive expansions with cards that focus on IF and Path of Radiance. Here’s a guide for importing it!

Lucas character, Mii costume DLC for Smash Bros. ⊟

Finally! I can dress my Mii as Protoman. Also that guy from Mother 3 is coming as DLC, which is nice. Oh, and Mewtwo and Lucas amiibo are on the way!

Nintendo has also launched a Smash Bros. Fighter Ballot page enabling you to vote on other characters you want to see in the game.

The World Ends With You DLC for Theatrhythm ⊟

The latest DLC for Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call in Japan (and presumably the rest of the world) includes two tracks from cult DS RPG The World Ends With You: “Twister” (BMS) and “Calling” (FMS).

Square Enix also put out tracks for Bravely Default and Chrono Trigger, which I’ve included screenshots for above too. Here’s a trailer for all this DLC:

Link, Isabelle, and more coming to Mario Kart 8 ⊟

What. Not sure if this reveal was accidental, but Nintendo UK’s official site posted listings for two upcoming downloadable content packs for Mario Kart 8.

The Zelda pack, coming this November, includes:

  • 3 Characters: Tanooki Mario, Cat Peach, Link
  • 4 Vehicles (is that a Blue Falcon from F-Zero?)
  • 8 Courses (including an F-Zero stage!)

The Animal Crossing pack isn’t due until May 2015:

  • 3 Characters: Villager, Isabelle, Dry Bowser
  • 4 Vehicles
  • 8 Courses (an Animal Crossing stage, yay!)

Each pack is priced at £7.00 or the UK, or around $11.60. The listings note, “As a bonus for purchasing both packs - as a bundle or separately - you can get eight different-coloured Yoshis and eight different-coloured Shy Guys that can be used right away.”

Hatsune Miku Project Diva F 2nd out November 18 ⊟

…in the US, November 21 elsewhere – for PlayStation 3 and PS Vita. There’s also… pre-order DLC! Sure, why not. Pre-ordering the game from “select retailers” gets you the “Americana” costume, which is kind of American-ish, I guess. And GameStop pre-orders (and people who already have Project Diva F!) get an “Extra Character Pack” with three other Vocaloids.

Weirdly, it didn’t get discounted a couple weeks back when the game was on sale, but the Muramasa Rebirth DLC episodes are half off on North American PSN this week – that’s just $2.49 for each original episode, each with a new playable character.

I feel kind of embarrassed, actually, about paying that little for new Vanillaware content. But not that embarrassed, because

Nintendo making it easy to share your Tomodachi Life

Nintendo is doing a lot of weird/neat things with letting people try out Tomodachi Life demos! First it put out the short Move-In Version trial for select Club Nintendo members to test weeks before the game releases – I’ve seen reports that everyone will have access to the demo when the game ships on June 6.

And now the company has announced that each copy of the game in Europe (maybe this will come to the U.S., too?) will include two free eShop download codes for Tomodachi Life: Welcome Version, which presumably is the same thing as the Move In trial.

“Two lucky friends or family members will be able to try their hand at creating Mii characters, all with their own unique voices and personality traits, and once the Mii characters have moved onto the island they will start to interact and players can try to solve their problems. When the Tomodachi Life: Welcome Version is completed, players can unlock a rare panda suit item, which can be worn in the full game.”

What a great way to encourage players to evangelize and share the game! And speaking of free stuff, you’ll be able to download a free item on the release day, as teased in the image above. What could that be?
