Star Radish clip (much better than the previous footage I’ve posted!). This shoot’em up, for those not keeping track of fake retro game releases, is included as an 8-bit diversion in witch-molesting import Doki Majo Plus.

Notice the blowing noise at the beginning of this clip? That’s the player puffing into the system mic to raise Kiara’s skirt. I wasn’t sure what bit of skin the player was fondling around the 00:35 mark (An armpit? A knee? Her clavicle?) until I noticed the tanlines from her garters.
As I understand it, the Doki Majo series has players searching for marks on the game’s cast of characters to uncover the witches that have snuck into their school. For some reason, Kiara’s halloween outfit, elven ears, and horns weren’t enough to incriminate her.

I wasn’t expecting anything else from this game within a game, but this seems to be not much more than a Star Soldier clone. It’s more annoying than the other knock-off released earlier this year, Star Prince from Retro Game Challenge, as it restarts the level when you die instead of bringing you to a checkpoint. At least the music’s great!
To access Star Radish, you’ll need to reach a certain point in Doki Majo Plus that requires (I suspect) going through a lot of Japanese text and menus. If you have a legal, backed up copy of the game, though, you can grab this save file and play the shoot’em up without much effort.

Finally, a decent length Star Radish video that isn’t shoved into a larger video filled with shots of Doki Majo Plus’s underage witches and players molesting them.
Unfortunately, you have to suffer Renge Oda and her brother’s [?] voiceover during the entire movie, and they’re ten times more annoying than the enthusiastic guy Xseed contracted for Retro Game Challenge’s Young Arino. It doesn’t help that the shoot’em up looks a lot less interesting than Star Prince. I guess it’s the idea that matters.
The video is replaced with a black screen around the 1:40 mark for some reason (I’d ask JC to translate what the two kids are babbling about, but he’s on vacation), so no need to watch it beyond that point unless you’re determined to see the SNK Playmore copyright notice.

Nanicon Magazine, from Doki Majo Plus. Apparently the young Renge Oda isn’t just obsessed with the fictional Star Radish, she’s something of a prodigy at the shmup, being referred to on the cover as “Renge Meijin.”
Great, now I want a visual novel about a kid who loves fake Famicom games, instead of a minor subplot about it in a creepy moe game.

In related news, SNK Playmore wants you to pick which cover art you like best for the Star Radish’s 8bit Soundtrack Plus CD. I implore you to vote for “B”.

The theme music on the game’s original April Fools reveal page was so great that it seemed like a shame not to use it for real — and it seems SNK thought the same thing, now that a playable Star Radish will appear in Doki Majo Plus.
SNK is continuing to blend reality and the Doki Majo universe on the game’s blog, advertising an 8-bit CD of Star Radish music. Is it a real item? Who even knows? Most of the posts are written by fictional characters.
Here’s the “Nanicom” console for which Star Radish was designed, from a blog entry by Renge Oda. It’s part Famicom, part Mega Drive, and blue! I want one.

This April Fools Day, SNK announced a (fake) 8-bit shooter called Star Radish. Famitsu reveals that not only has SNK decided to actually make the “Mikadosoft” title, but it’s being included in Doki Majo Plus.
The game comes into play as a competition with Renge Oda, the retrogaming potential witch who held forth about Psycho Soldier on her blog. Star Radish is a “Nanicon” game like one of the Psycho Soldier ports — Famitsu reveals “Nanicon” to be a contraction for “Number One Ninki (Popular) Computer”.
I must now decide whether my love of new Famicom-style games can carry me through hours of text boxes and uncomfortable minigames. Retro gaming is as much a part of otaku culture as gross moe stuff — the cross-pollination of the two had to happen sometime.

The retrogaming-obsessed Renge Oda, a fan of Athena, posted this screenshot comparison of different (parody) console ports of Psycho Soldier. It’s sort of like the fake ports in Game Center CX 2, except that the source game is real — and, critically, it’s being discussed by a fictional junior-high student.
