When was the last time you cared about a Doom mod? Megaman 8-bit Deathmatch is a multiplayer Doom game based on classic Mega Man weapons. The pixel-textured maps are littered with Robot Monster weapons, with which players can temporarily replace their Mega Busters. And with those weapons, you shoot other Mega Men.
CutmanMike just released an alpha version, if you’d like to try it out. I’m pretty sure it requires ZDoom or some other Doom iteration to play. Hella nostalgic! I totally remember downloading weird Doom WADs from CompuServe.

I remember visiting a “computer convention” in 1995, thinking I could maybe find a good deal on my first computer, but that was not the case. One great thing about the event, though, is you couldn’t throw a rock around the show floor without hitting a pile of 1.44 MB disks filled with Doom mods — Doom with Barney, Doom with the Simpsons, all sorts of ridiculous shit.
Apparently someone released a Fist of the North Star mod for Doom several years ago, and now some bored programmer has ported the game to the Nintendo DS. Here’s a music video/trailer of the original PC version that probably makes the hack seem awesomer than it actually is (notice the lack of gameplay clips):

For all my complaining about Chinatown Wars’ instrumental-heavy soundtrack and lack of cocaine rap, its actually not that bad! You can hear a bit of it in this video — my apologies for linking to footage taken from a bootlegged ROM, but Rockstar has released a distressingly small amount of media for the game, despite it releasing next week. Was this the case with Grand Theft Auto IV? Doubt it!
The publisher also released the full (some would say “needlessly extended”) Chinatown Wars track with verses by Ghostface Killah and Doom, and DJ Premier introducing and mixing the track. As far as rap songs created for promotional purposes go, it’s certainly not as bad as Sir Mix-A-Lot’s Target commercial, but I wouldn’t say it’s of the same caliber as Kriss Kross’ Sprite ditty, either.
