Tiny Cartridge

Looks like Aksys is going to start supporting the 3DS Virtual Console, which is good news. The specifics of that early support — by which I mean Game Boy Double Dragon — may not be as encouraging, but it’s support nonetheless. That’ll happen in North America on October 20.

More directly exciting is the announcement that Double Dragon 2 will be released on the Wii Virtual Console at some point. Can you believe someone is still out there working on a Wii VC release? HEROIC.

Remade boxart from a recent NES Cover Art Jam. The new Double Dragon II and Iron Sword pieces actually surpass the originals (though I’m sure Fabio fans will disagree)!

List of artists (by order in the slideshow):

  • Double Dragon II by Ben Camberos
  • Castlevania III by Gerardo Ramirez
  • Super Mario Bros. by Mick Collins
  • River City Ransom by Ray Ocampo
  • Iron Sword by Carlos Lerma

This re-illustrated Crystalis cover by Lamar Abrams wasn’t part of the jam but definitely merits mentioning.

Chan also posted this fantastic entry from his journal, recounting the time he beat Double Dragon. Good for him!

I can’t help but think of the Spice Girls’ affectionate song “2 Become 1” whenever I see this Double Dragon piece from the “i am 8-bit” exhibit.

Don’t be fooled by the familiar colors on their console! The game is actually running on a Micro Genius IQ 701, an NES clone released in South America.
