Metal Slime PlayStation 4 ⊟
Sony is putting out a limited edition Metal Slime PlayStation 4 in Japan, and even though there is nothing tiny or cartridge-y about this news, it is going on the site because we are talking about a Metal Slime console here.
The console will release with Dragon Quest Heroes, a Dynasty Warriors-style collab between Square Enix and Koei Tecmo, similar to Nintendo’s project with the latter company to release Hyrule Warriors for Wii U. Hitting Japan next year, this seems like the first Dragon Quest to hit a Sony console for some time now!
Maybe the game being on a Sony system will increase its chances of coming out to the West, because it’s not looking like we’ll ever get Dragon Quest 3DS or the other Nintendo-platform titles. Images via Inside Games.
Square Enix doesn’t sound confident about bringing Dragon Quest VII 3DS to the West :o( ⊟
So what’s the deal with Square Enix not localizing any of its Dragon Quest games for the 3DS released in Japan? You’d think the publisher would localize the DQVII remake for the 3DS at least, right? Siliconera caught up with Dragon Quest mobile producer Noriyoshi Fujimoto to see if there’s any chance we’ll get that one, but he offered the following response:
“In terms of DQVII, it has a lot of text to go through and translate, and we’ve received so many requests and so much positive feedback about the game, but unfortunately, we have to consider the cost and the manpower needed to handle the sheer load of text. In terms of scenario and script, the game is probably one of the largest in the DQ franchise. If a lot of people can buy it and support it… well, we can’t promise anything.
… We’ve gotten a lot of requests, we really want to do it, but right now, we need to hammer out what kind of resources we’d need to do it. We say this a lot, but, we can’t seem to get to the point where it’s justifiable.”
In absolutely unrelated news, Square Enix will release the original Dragon Quest, as well as subsequent games (II and III have been mentioned), with a new localization to smartphones starting this September. I can’t be too bitter since those older titles have a lot less text to translate, but you’d be amazed how bitter I still manage to be regardless. Image is via F Yeah Dragon Quest!
You Slime up my life ⊟
Here it is, the Dragon Quest Slime Sensor Light, the latest in Square Enix and Taito’s line of things that are shaped like the iconic Dragon Quest enemy.
Now, I have a lot of things in my house that bear the image of the Slime. Magnets, plush toys, a soft drink bottle, a USB battery charger, the beloved Slime Speaker Stand… even my 3DS looks like a Slime.
Anyway, what I’m trying to say is that none of those things light up, so now I need this too. NCSX will ship it in December for $20.

Still relevant. After the break, we’ve got three new videos for Dragon Quest X 3DS, including a five-minute trailer and two Japanese commercials for the handheld MMORPG.
Oh hi there, fluffy Dragon Quest headphones ⊟
The Watabou is a cute monster from the DQ Monsters series, and it’s also what keeps your ears warm while you’re listening to Love Hz. NCSX will happily sell you these lil’ guys for shipment in November.

Still looks fantastic, and I still don’t trust that this is what the 3DS version will look like.
But wow, what is even going on in this game? Being a Japan-only MMO, I never dared follow the details of DQX, and after watching this I am super curious. A lot of running and jumping, and I guess a ship captain is there?

Dragon Quest X 3DS looks pretty good! ⊟
You’re going to want to watch the video to see for yourself, as my crudely web-generated GIFs fail to capture it all, but Dragon Quest X’s streaming 3DS version looks really nice… at least in the idealized, who-knows-how-real version shown in this morning’s Nintendo Direct.
Being streaming, the quality will of course also depend on your own home internet connection, but at least Square Enix appears to be aiming high. Maybe streaming gameplay won’t require too much bandwidth because the 3DS’s resolution is low…

The Wii/Wii U/PC MMO will be released on 3DS in Japan September 4. Players of the handheld version will be able to share the same game world with the other versions. The control scheme looks really, really awkward and shoehorned, with basically pictures of Wii U buttons on the touchscreen.
It’s apparently built on streaming tech, like the mobile version, which means it isn’t so much a 3DS game as a 3DS client running an OnLive-style stream of the game running on a computer somewhere… else… Despite the actual game not really being on 3DS, it’ll still cost ¥3800 and come in a box (packaging shot above via Famitsu). As a result of the streaming, it’ll look better than most 3DS games but won’t be in 3D.
An in-game code will be available to get exclusive “Lemon Slime” items. I do want Lemon Slime items…

Dragon Quest floor mats ⊟
Add mystery, intrigue, danger and implied dungeons to your home with these Dragon Quest floor mats, on J-List for $23 each. The 50cm square mats come in staircase, journey door or poison swamp styles.
I wonder if you could use a poison swamp tile to keep your cat away from an area… it’s a good look anyway!
Will you be my valentine, Chocolate Golem? ⊟
I NEED to have this guy in my life. It’s the latest concoction from Luida’s Bar, the Dragon Quest-themed cafe in Tokyo. This mix of chocolate and opera cake will join the dessert menu for the next month, in honor of Valentine’s Day and the Japanese release of Dragon Quest Monsters 2 for 3DS.
From now on, when people ask what my favorite kind of food is, I won’t answer with something boring like Chinese food or French cuisine. With a glint in my eye, I’ll tell them my favorite is Dragon Quest monster food, yes, meals that have been fashioned to look like monsters from Dragon Quest, right before I float away into the sky, leaving this limited world to search for something more in the cosmos. … Yeah, that’s what I’ll tell them.
Since I brought up Dragon Quest, I have to point you to my second-favorite new Tumblr, Pixel Digest. It’s a blog about neat sprites, backgrounds, animations, and tricks with pixels in games, and I love it. The latest entry shares a clever trick TOSE employed in Dragon Quest III for the Game Boy Color to make the game look far better than it should have despite the system’s limitations.

Here’s a GIF to remind you the 3DS remake (and its limited edition XL bundle — here’s an unboxing) released in Japan this week. The image comes from Kimimi, who posted a video showing the first half hour of her playthrough with the import at Nintendo Life.
So, again, that makes four Dragon Quest games for 3DS that have released in Japan and nowhere else. Now that Bravely Default is out in North America today, maybe we’ll hear about other plans Square Enix and Nintendo have for this side of the Pacific soon. Might as well put those trademarks to use!
