DS/3DS Release Dates & Sales // Tiny Cartridge Stickers For Your Games!

Seaman illustration by Jacob Paul Ferguson, soon to be available as a print (click for slightly larger version)!

I wonder what Seaman’s creator, Yoot Saito (who also worked on The Tower, Odama), has been busy with lately. I’m sure he has more original games and ports coming to iPhone/iPad, but I remember he mentioned a few months ago that he’d like to produce a new Seaman game for Nintendo 3DS with some vague Flipnote-style online features. And Saito and his team have considered releasing Seaman on the DS for several years now…

Dreamcast VMU modded to fit an iPod Nano inside. It doesn’t look like you can use the device’s buttons to control playback, but it’s still a neat way to repurpose an extra Visual Memory Unit you have lying around.

And of course, it slips into a Dreamcast controller, allowing you to listen to all of Britney Spears’ greatest hits the next time you’re playing Shenmue or Chu Chu Rocket:

Happy birthday, Dreamcast! You were a beautiful console; don’t let anyone ever tell you otherwise. Also, you still have a few unreleased games that I look forward to playing!

Remembering old friends brings warm smiles. Our old posts have the same effect, which is why I’m linking our list of Dreamcast tributes from last year instead of posting the giant mural of Segata Sanshiro/Gunpei Yokoi/Tupac in heaven that I created to honor the old Sega system.

Dreamcast Boombox by XCKDIY. Yes, the same Chinese modder behind yesterday’s Mini Game Boy arcade cabinet also created this amazing hybrid of a portable stereo and Sega’s beloved 128-bit console.

From what I can tell, the boombox’s tape deck is replaced with a small display and controller ports, and the CD player now accepts game discs (pirated copies, too, apparently).

If you doubt the authenticity of the mod or these photos, refer to this video recorded by XCKDIY:

I can’t say for sure what that whistling sound is, but I presume it’s the game disc spinning. Or maybe the modder had a kettle going while he filmed this, I don’t know.

Super Black Dreamcast console, sold exclusively through Sega’s Dreamcast Direct website (and then again, just now, on eBay). I put serious consideration into buying one of those black Sega Sports Dreamcasts and then trying to remove the logo from the top, because I think black Dreamcasts look way rad.

Someone else agreed with my estimation of the radness of that colorway, to the tune of £235.00 ($387.53).

Dreamcast stuff we should have posted two days ago

You probably heard that this Wednesday was the tenth anniversary of the US launch of the Dreamcast. It would appear that Eric and I didn’t hear that, judging by our total failure to post anything Dreamcast-related on the site, but the truth is we were too busy playing Dreamcast 2 to notice. I had no desire to lose my place on the Seaman Universe leaderboards because I was off blogging.

So here’s some stuff we would have posted, had we not been extremely busy with Chu Chu Chu Chu Rocket:

  • A link to Mister Raroo’s wonderful Dreamcast column, in which he compares his life now to his life at the Dreamcast launch.
  • The feature in which I got Joystiq coworkers to share Dreamcast anecdotes, much like we did for the Genesis. One of our writers is in a Dreamcast game.
  • The final Segata Sanshiro commercial, in which the heroic Sega mascot saves the Dreamcast launch.

  • “Error Enka,” a song hidden on the Segagaga disc that plays when you put the game into a CD player. The song is mostly about how the disc won’t work in a CD player, and about thanking the game’s staff.

Made in Ore Opens Old Wounds for Fanboys

Dreamcast fans never say die! This user-created Made in Ore microgame challenges you to blast a Famicom and PlayStation, leaving Sega’s system behind as the victor. Quite a different outcome from the sixth-generation game console war, when PlayStation 2 knocked Sega out of the hardware business. :o(

Notice that in the above clip, the little melody is taken from sales-disaster Shenmue, and the man pictured in the center is Hidekazu Yukawa, or Mr. Sega. As senior managing director for the company, Yukawa starred in several hilarious Dreamcast commercials in Japan, and actually appeared on the system’s retail box!

Speaking of Made in Ore and console wars, posting this Sony-bashing clip seems appropriate:

I don’t know about you, but I could just go on posting Made in Ore microgames every day until we have to eventually close the site (likely after all of our readers lose interest from this overload of Made in Ore videos).

“Friends Help Friends Who Are Under The Weather”

IGN Boards member Beundertaker posted a small collection of vignettes imagining the gaming console wars as a thing of the past, a time when swords have been beaten into ploughshares and when nasty forum threads have dissolved in a warm bowl of chicken soup.

I’ve seen sketches with similar sentiments before, but I particularly like the look of these, and nearly teared up (in a manly way) when I saw this:

So long as we’re talking about the Dreamcast, let’s enjoy this short animation created with the Nintendo DSi’s Moving Memo Pad software:

I was going to write something about the anniversary of the US launch of the Sega Dreamcast, but then I read Mister Raroo’s column on the subject and decided that I would be doing a disservice if I did anything other than point you there.

He completely nails the feelings I associate with the Dreamcast. The games were all so clever and fun and vaguely arcadey. Everything about the system projected a feeling of upbeat lightness in a way that Nintendo’s hamfisted family-friendly approach never has.

It was also the last system that many of us were able to look at without cynicism. Its end was the beginning of hating the companies who sell me systems.

Time for a Segagaga interlude! I’ve been humming this since Eric linked that interview with Tez Okano.

The translated lyrics to the Segagaga March are also listed in the YouTube video description, but I’m reproducing them here for two reasons: first, to recognize the admirable work of the DELTAHEAD Translation group, and second, because the song is a lot more enjoyable when you realize that it’s Sega propaganda that is both mundane (listing the location of Sega’s offices) and overblown. Rather like Shenmue.

Sega, Sega—Oota-ku, Tokyo,
Keikyu Haneda Airport line, Ohtorii station.
Game creation is our sanctuary in life,
Yet victory is still far away.
We stumble and get depressed, but we move on.
Sega, Sega—oh, move on to tomorrow.

Sega, Sega—near the Tama River.
Take the Haneda-guchi exit off Shuto Highway, then head to Kanpachi.
Arrows and bullets spent, without friends,
Yet our minds and spirits soar higher.
Jump for joy! Let’s help each other and stand together!
Sega, Sega—oh, move on to tomorrow.

Sega, Sega—oh, move on to tomorrow.

Puts a tear in my eye.
