DSiWare hack hits 'final' release, runs from DSi menu →

While a (relatively small) portion of the DS playing world has moved onto 3DS, a group of hackers has still been toiling away at the DSi, releasing the “final” version of the DSiWarehax exploit.

This program uses one of four DSiWare games (Sudoku, Guitar Rock Tour, Legends of Exidia, or Fieldrunners) to enable homebrew in DSi mode, meaning it has access to the DSi’s extra RAM and the SD card. You can run it straight from the DSi menu when installed.

“This update comes with a catch!” according to GBATemp announcement. “If you currently do not have one of the 4 exploitable titles you will not be able to get them.” This is because you have to update your DSi firmware to download them, and you need an older version of the DSi firmware to operate the hack.

The usual caveats apply. DS hacks are useful and cool when used for things like running homebrew software or translation patches for games you own. But if you use them for piracy-related reasons, you are breaking the law, and you are also just the worst. Seriously, I cannot stress enough what a dick move that is.

Anti-flashcart DSi update released, defeated

Nintendo has put out a new 1.4.2 update for DSi models, and while it’s unclear if the new firmware adds any new functionality to the system (e.g. DSiWare migration), many report this release blocks several popular flashcarts.

Scoffing at these new anti-piracy countermeasures, at least one flashcart manufacturer, R4iDSN claims to have found a workaround and will release an update for its device this week. Expect other teams to follow with similar news.

New DSi and DSi XL covers from Gametech’s WaSaBi line. These are all polycarbonate covers overlaid with Japanese-style fabric, and all cost between ¥3,150 ($39) and ¥3,570  ($44). Which is, yes, really expensive for a case for now-outdated hardware.

Gametech also announced new cases featuring the same fabrics for iPhone 4 and iPad.

New DSi hack can reportedly install channels and launch content — could we soon see a Homebrew Channel setup for DSis? How great would it be to have Moonshell installed on your portable, allowing you to watch videos from you SD card? Or to boot homebrew games (e.g. the Lone Wolf series) just like any DSiWare app?

This is a teaser image for now, so you can’t try it out on your DSi just yet. The unnamed team working on this hack intends to show off a video within a week. Note that the group inserted a new image for the icon, unlike that old RAM patch trick that simply re-used the Flipnote frog.

According to OzModChips, this team has been working on this hack for a year now. For those of you doubting its authenticity, keep in mind that this seller was also the first to show off the PS3 Jailbreak, the Acekard 2i on a non-Japanese DSi, and more.

Media Station for DSi by CTA Digital. Usually, CTA’s accessories are impractical or inflatable, but this one is really nice! Not only does it include storage for games, styli, and SD cards, it also includes an SD card reader, so you can transfer data to and from your computer while you’ve got it plugged into a USB port (which is where the power for the DSi comes from).

On top of that, it’s actually a pretty classy-looking way to store your DSi and some on-hand games. I like it!

Though I spotted this on CTA’s “New Products” page, it’s apparently been out since October. Amazon has it for $19.50.

Limited edition Green and Orange DSi bundles with Mario Party DS, debuting in the U.S. this Friday for $149.99 (click for a larger image). The lime green color was previously limited to Japanese XLs, and I believe the orange model is a first for the handheld in any region!

Neither are as nice as the Super Mario Bros. 25th Anniversary DSi XL, but if you don’t care for the bigger screen size and would rather own Mario Party DS than an extra copy of Mario Kart DS, here’s your chance to get something nice for yourself in Green or Orange. I expect Amazon to begin offering the new bundles soon.

Mario & Luigi DSi bundle for $149.99 →

I neglected to mention it yesterday, but along with the DSi and DSi XL system price cuts, Amazon has also marked down its Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story DSi bundle (select the bundle in the dropdown menu) to $149.99 — not bad for a White DSi and one of the system’s best RPGs.

Also, I wanted to feature this awesome mock-up logo of Mario & Luigi RPG 4, which isn’t a real game but should be. Maybe the plot could explain Waluigi’s Soul Man-esque transformation in the image above.

Supercard defeats DSi anti-piracy update

A day after Nintendo put out a new DSi firmware upgrade preventing system owners from loading pirated games or homebrew software, Chinese flashcart manufacturer Supercard has released an update for its DSTWO product that circumvents those new protections. It plans to also provide a fix for its DSONEi device next week.

Presumably, other flashcart companies will soon release their own updates. Manufacturers found a workaround for these countermeasures in record time — hackers spent a little over a month to get these devices working on the DSi when it first launched with new anti-piracy tech, and over four months when Nintendo added extra security with its last system update in July 2009.

The upcoming Nintendo 3DS is said to have some “sophisticated” protections to guard the portable against flashcart use. Hopefully for Nintendo (and developers looking to make their money back with 3DS software), that technology will hold up longer than a day against pirates.

Nintendo Cuts DSi/XL prices to $150/$170

Months after discounting the systems in the UK and Japan, Nintendo has finally cut its prices for the DSi (now $149.9) and DSi XL (now $169.99) in North America. Huzzah!

Those DSi XLs still seem really expensive, but those screens are huge, and the oversized portables come preloaded with Brain Age Express: Math, Brain Age Express: Arts & Letters, Photo Clock, and the usual free software (Flipnote Studio, Nintendo DSi Browser).

These new prices take effect on September 12th — DS Lites will stay priced at $129.99 Also, Nintendo revealed that Golden Sun: Dark Dawn launches on November 29th.

DSi mode open for homebrew developers →

Forgive me for being hazy on the details, but if you’re smart enough to develop homebrew DS software, you’re also smart enough to figure out what coder Dave J. Murphy is talking about in this post.

Basically, using a complicated combination of save game exploits and wifi file transfer, Murphy claims to have devised a method of homebrew access to DSi mode, something that was first seen in 2009 but still has yet to take off reliably. With any luck, homebrewers will make good use of this method and give us a DSi Game Boy Camera emulator, as well as, um, games.

Aside from the obvious camera uses, DSi mode support could also open the way for homebrew software to take advantage of the system’s improved hardware, like its WPA wireless, extra RAM/faster CPU (should benefit emulators), and more. I’d love to see what developers will manage to accomplish with access to the SD card slot, too!

Domo-kun DSi shell hidden behind a Dragon Quest Slime speaker stand. I love this trend of DSi cases that use the camera for a mascot’s eyes (e.g. Gachapin/Mukku).

DS Lite owners need not feel left out, as there’s a Domo shell for you, too. I would suggest buying one of these protective cases instead of spending money on the Domo mini-games currently available on DSiWare.
