DSiWare-bound: New Shantae, Fieldrunners, and Art Style: Digidrive

Nintendo unveiled a surprising collection of first- and third-party titles slated for its DSiWare service, and I think we can all agree that the most exciting title in the batch is Sparkle Snapshots, which I presume is actually Itsudemo Print Club: Kira Deco Premium.

Oh, and another bit Generations game, Digidrive, is receiving a DSiWare/Art Style port, but consider these details before you get too excited about the game:

Also announced from Nintendo’s end: 10 Electroplankton minigames, Art Academy: Second Semester, Picturebook Games: The Royal Bluff (this weird thing), and Pinball Pulse: The Ancients Beckon (I’m curious about this!).

As for other developers, WayForward is finally releasing one of its many Shantae prototypes, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge, after years of fanboys demanding a new game for the genie. It’s the first release of a three-episode series!

Subatomic is also bringing its acclaimed iPhone tower defense title Fieldrunners to DSiWare (and PSP Minis).

All of the games mentioned above (with the exception of Second Semester, releasing September 28th), are slated for the fourth quarter of 2009. Yay!

Buy: U.S. Matte White, Pink, Black and Blue DSi

Import: Japanese Nintendo DSi (White, Black, Pink, Red, Lime Green, Metallic Blue)

10 Electroplankton music apps slated for DSiWare (in Japan) →

Nintendo will bring Toshio Iwai’s bubbly music software Electroplankton to DSiWare in Japan as 10 separate mini-apps, each sold for 200 Points.

Tracy, Hanenbow, Nanocarp, and Beatnes — the last of which enables you to compose NES/Famicom-style chiptunes — will release first on July 8th. The second batch of downloadables will include Rec-Rec and Lumiloop on July 22nd. Nintendo will offer Sun-Animalcule, Luminaria, Marine-Snow, and Volvoice last in August.

While many likely prefer to see new and original titles on DSiWare (notwithstanding those waiting for Nintendo to transform the platform into a portable Virtual Console), rather than excepts from a game hardly anyone bought three years ago, I’m alright wth developer Indies Zero picking up some easy cash. They are, after all, the studio behind Retro Game Challenge.

And I’m sure there are a few dozen Electroplankton fans out there who really wish they could load some of the composition tools even when they have another (non flash) cart popped into their systems. Besides, have you looked at Electroplankton prices lately? Hachi machi.

Electroplankton is hella expensive →

$59.99 used copy of Electroplankton at GameStop.

I’m not surprised that this quirky music software has become a rare title, what with its U.S. release mostly limited to online retailers, but I didn’t expect that it would already command preowned prices up to $60 (which is also how much a new copy sells for).

It gets worse on Amazon, where a new copy can run you anywhere from $69 to $155. eBay is more sensible, but only slightly so, with copies listed from $3.50 to $123.

Who knew that this game that received so much flak for not including a save function would be so high in demand? Maybe everyone is trying to snatch one up for their own gadget orchestra?

Gadget Orchestra by Jetdaisuke.

Similar to the iPhone and DS band video that caught on earlier this year, this performance combines a variety of portable devices, applications, and music tools:

  • Korg Kaossilator Dynamic Phrase Synthesizer
  • iPod Touch with Mokugyo (JP only)
  • iPhone with Bloom
  • Nintendo DS Lite with Electroplankton
  • Nintendo DSi with KORG DS-10
  • Belkin Rockstar

How frickin’ boss is this setup? Totally frickin’ boss. If you haven’t seen it yet, you should also check out Jetdaisuke’s Straw TalkBox with DSi demonstration!
