Game Center CX’s Arino playing Excitebike 3D. If the video here doesn’t load for you — Nico Nico Douga can be finicky like that, and it’s not too friendly with Tumblr’s dashboard — you can settle for a condensed commercial Nintendo posted on its Japanese site.

Want a new reason to hate 3DS region-locking (or region-specific content)? While we’re dicking around with Green Lantern movie trailers on the eShop, in Japan, 3DS owners are watching free episodes of Game Center CX.

Each year brings a new reason for Game Center CX fans in the West to feel slighted. :o(

Buy: Retro Game Challenge ($13.99!)

Free Excitebike with 3D, track editor saving coming to U.S. eShop →

When the eShop launches on June 6, North American 3DS owners will recieve the same free bonus that’s releasing in Japan: a free “3D Classics” version of Excitebike that allows you to view the NES game in stereoscopic 3D.

Nintendo will give away Excitebike for just a limited period of time, but it’s worth picking it up even when it’s no longer free, as the game has been modified to allow players to save courses created in the track editor (similar to the Wii Virtual Console release).

And if this and the free Pokedex 3D app aren’t enough to get you excited about the eShop’s launch, maybe you’ll be thrilled to hear that Alleyway, that Game Boy Arkanoid knock-off featuring Mario as he pilots the paddle, is also headed to the eShop’s Virtual Console.

Japanese eShop to give away 3D Excitebike

Speaking at an investors’ briefing yesterday, Nintendo’s CEO and president Satoru Iwata shared the company’s plans for promoting next month’s big firmware update for the 3DS, which will bring the built-in web browser, DSiWare transfers, and the eShop to the system.

When the eShop debuts — offering DSiWare games, Virtual Console releases, 3DS demos, “3D Classics”, and more — the service will offer a 3D-enhanced version of NES racer Excitebike for free in Japan to entice users. It’s not clear yet if the eShops in North America and Europe will also receive Excitebike or any other title for free.

Iwata also mentioned that while the 3DS’ Virtual Console will feature Game Boy and Game Boy Color releases to start, the company hopes to offer games from other platforms in the future. Nintendo  previously announced that Game Gear and TurboGrafx-16 titles will eventually appear on the portable Virtual Console shop.

Startling revelation of the week

The “P” in Super Mario Bros. 3’s P-Wing stands for “Paratroopa”, as in Paratroopa Wing. Mind blown.

Almost as surprising — Nintendo veteran Toshihiko Nakago revealed in a recent interview with company president Satoru Iwata (the same Q&A that betrayed the above secret) that he shared a bed with legendary designer Shigeru Miyamoto on more than one occasion:

DSi music visualizers in motion!

The Excitebike one is pretty cool — presumably, the song’s volume determines the ramps that appear on the track.

You can play simple instruments along with your songs! The barking dog and meowing cat effects in the above clip are way cute.

Also, the video’s second half has that Mario visualizer we’ve talked about a couple times. You can collect coins as music plays — apparently, Lakitu also uses the song’s volume to determine what height he leaves the coins at.

8 things you might not know about the DSi

By now, most of you know about the major improvements behind Nintendo’s DSi hardware — bigger screens, slightly longer stylus, an SD slot, two cameras, digital audio capabilities, improved speakers, a built-in browser, and a content download shop. There are obvious flaws, too, such as the missing GBA slot and lack of MP3 support.

But you already know all about those, so we’ve picked out some of the new system’s obscure details that you might not be aware of yet!

  1. The volume slider is now a rocker switch, like the GBA Micro, and has been moved to the left side.
  2. Two Brain Age titles will debut with the online shop — a “literature edition” and a “science edition.”
  3. Unlike previous models, the DSi will feature WPA/WPA2 support. It will also have “improved security features” for WEP.

  1. “Moving Notebook” software allows you to scrawl out memos and create small animations. You can even use the mic to record some audio for the clip.
  2. The DSi uses a unique AC adapter incompatible with the DS Lite’s adapter or other portables adapters.
  3. DSi Sound, the system’s music playing feature, has different visualizers (e.g. Excitebike, chicks hatching from eggs) to accompany your songs.

  1. The DSi has five brightness settings compared to the DS Lite’s four brightness settings.
  2. While the DS Lite takes 3 hours to charge its battery, the DSi takes only 2.5 hours. Unfortunately, the DSi also has a shorter battery life by an hour.

And a bonus! If you look at the DSi’s two speaker holes and its hinge camera, you’ll totally see a “face in a place.”
