Disk-kun Super Mario Bros. Game & Watch. This special edition Game & Watch, inside a case shaped like the Famicom Disk System mascot, was given away to high scorers in a Famicom Grand Prix F-1 Race contest.

Since the contest has long since ended, and you’d have no shot against whatever dudes have been playing Famicom Grand Prix since 1987, there’s no way to get one of these for yourself. Unless someone were to put one on eBay, like has been done right here.

Unfortunately, there’s something of a high score contest going there, too. The current bid is at $1225.

The Famicom Disk System loading music played on a ukulele. If you slow it down enough, it’s the GameCube menu music played on a ukulele!

YouTube user yayatsumura has a whole channel of uke’d game music, including well-known stuff like Zelda and Mario, and less covered things like 428, Actraiser (which had such awesome music) and the PC-88 version of Silpheed.

In other news, I miss Tanguy Ukulele Orchestra.

Legend of Zelda prototype found →

This is a pretty damn amazing find on the part of the TCRF/Lost Levellers who made it happen: a prototype version of the Famicom Disk System release of The Legend of Zelda has been found and ripped!

The changes mostly involve number of enemies (way more enemies were added to almost every dungeon room in the final release), though there are slight differences in room layouts, music and sound effect changes, and tweaks in gameplay (like the Wizzrobes’ beams hurting less, and the screen not pausing when you use a candle). You can’t even hit the old man!

I say this a lot, but given that I can now download and play a version of my favorite Zelda that I’ve never seen before, it’s a Christmas miracle.

Buy: The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, Phantom Hourglass, and more

Famicom Disk System prizes. eBay seller devster04 is selling three complete Disk System prize games (and a Famicom prize), with their yellow Diskun cases. Golf (Japan Course), Golf (US Course), and 3D Hot Rally were given away in score competitions. The gold Punch-Out!! cart was second prize in the US Course competition, and is included with that auction.

These would be neat to have even if, say, the disk drive in your Twin Famicom doesn’t work (hypothetically).

Metroid’s saved game screen. Most U.S. gamers never saw this screen pop up in their copies of Metroid, as the Western releases featured a password system (making the famous “Justin Bailey” code possible).

In Japan, where the game released for the Famicom Disk System, players were greeted with a selection of three save slots and an awesome “Kill Mode” (delete file) option.

Buy: Metroid: Other M (August 31st)

Yuyuki (Famicom Disk System) commercial. The game is a graphical text adventure parodying the Journey to the West series, which explains why there’s a Zhu Bajie-like pig guy riding a plane in this ad. Sort of.

Wikipedia notes that “The most striking part was the commercial’s jingle; the developers employed a strange song of no particular meaning that ranted the names of the main characters.” Also according to Wiki, this is the last Disk System game to be advertised on TV!

Famicom Disk System Disk Hand Case. This case lets you carry around a few Disk System games, secure in the knowledge that they’re strapped to your wrist for some reason. The eBay store “Japanese Item Shop” has ten of these available, for … $26.59 each.

To me, the most interesting thing about these cases is that they were produced by Nintendo and Mori Games, the company behind the Gundam weapon styli and recent Professor Layton accessories. I didn’t realize the company had been around that long!

Cover for the pirated Famicom Disk edition of Tetris, another gem from Caveman Bowl’s collection of bootleg FDS games. Tetris aficionados will recognize that while the Famicom/NES received two versions of the famous puzzler from Tengen and Nintendo, there’s no record of any commercial Tetris release for Famicom Disk.

Caveman Bowl says this plays like Nintendo’s Tetris except with extra block shapes (e.g. pieces that look like the letter U). Though it’s not as swank as the Famicom game’s box, I really like this bootleg’s cover with its tetriminos spilling out the screen and the Tetris poster in the top right corner.

Famicom Denshimail episode all about Famicom/Famicom Disk System stacking. Did you ever wonder if Hudson made a device purpose-built for holding the Famicom and Disk System together? If so… that’s a really weird thing to wonder about. But also, yes.

The video introduces the Famicon System Rack, a big red chunk of plastic that keeps the Disk System from falling off of the Famicom (perish the thought!) It’s certainly a distinctive look.

The GameCube menu music, sped up 25x. “ABoredGameDev” on the NinDB forum posted this video of the fairly ambient music sped up, revealing the melody. It’s the Famicom Disk System startup music!

I’ve heard this jingle about a million times since buying my Twin Famicom (the disk part still doesn’t work, so I hear this music a lot).

Whooooooooooaaaaaaaaaa

Famicom Disk System ad. The “Disk Card age” (as the ad calls it) didn’t exactly last long, but this commercial sure did the trick of making it seem like an age you wanted to be part of. Of course, the fact that you needed a Disk System to play Zelda also helped build excitement.

While watching this commercial, the music and the tone of the thing made me expect a “But wait! There’s more!”

Speaking of Nintendo peripherals that added game formats, here’s an ad for the Satellaview that features Space Mario! Talking! In Japanese!

Famicom Dojo’s “Famicom Denshimail” on the Famicom Disk System’s batteries. I’m glad someone is out there covering the minutiae of Famicom hardware!
