“Picross 3D II” Flipnote by Scott Kurtz. The PVP cartoonist drew this amusing Flipnote as a promotion for Picross 3D, which of course it doesn’t need because the game’s wonderful and everyone bought it already.

Kurtz’s other Picross Flipnote:

Maybe it’s just me, but I think Kurtz is really funny when he’s just screwing around like this. I find things like these and the Penny Arcade TV Blamimations hilarious.

Flipnote Studio frogs pose on a DSi, photographed by Hatena’s Aaron Berman (click for a large version).

Did you know Hatena has several online services, not just Flipnote Hatena? In addition to its Youtube-like site for posting Flipnote Studio animations, the Japanese company also has Haiku, Diary, Bookmark, and Fotolife — which are pretty much their equivalents of Twitter, Blogger, Delicious, and Flickr, respectively.

When I last checked, most of those were only available in Japanese, but it looks like Hatena Haiku is now open to English users. Unfortunately, it seems as if the only people who’ve noticed this and taken advantage of the site are Flipnote’s adolescent users.

Something else you likely didn’t know: the Flipnote Hatena team has a Twitter account! You should follow them, not only to keep track of their weekly newsletters, but also because it’s sad that such a great and innovative site has only a hundred or so followers. You should add us on Twitter, too, if you haven’t yet.

Oh, and here’s a great music video someone posted after animating the entire production in Flipnote.

Gone, but not forgotten: Foolipnote

One of the cooler video game-related April Fools’ Day jokes that most sites (including Tiny Cartridge) neglected to report about last week was Foolipnote Hatena, an alternate and temporary edition of Flipnote Hatena, Nintendo’s site for animations created in the DSi’s Flipnote app.

Foolipnote Hatena invited users to upload clips of jokes, lies, and gags, offering a unique hub where users could “share their untruths with the world”.

As fun as the concept sounds, most of the animations I saw at the temporary site were less than entertaining, which I blame on unimaginative kids. The quotes from Hatena’s staff about the Foolipnote’s creation, though, are gold:

Galaxy Intruders 2 for Raroo Fun System announced!

I discovered why everyone forgot about Space Invaders Extreme 2’s release next week — who wants to put in a reservation for yet another Space Invaders game when this crazy shoot’em up is just around the corner?

This sequel boasts better graphics, bigger bosses, three difficulty modes, unlockable ships, and more. One of the dudes who works at Awesome Onion even told me the Japanese edition will come out on a disk with a soundtrack that blows away previous Raroo Fun System releases!

Preorder: Space Invaders Extreme 2 ($19.99)

Three new Raroo Fun System games announced: Police Chicken: Interrogation Specialist, Hungry Walter, and Roger Passes Geometry: An Adventure in Math.

I saw this video playing on the televisions at Awesome Onion this morning as I was putting in my preorder for Diesel Kiss, and I couldn’t wait to run home and share it with you. I was already considering importing a Raroo Fun System after seeing the Galaxy Intruders trailer, but now I’m determined to grab one and play Police Chicken.

I’m not so sure about Roger Passes Geometry, though. The low-polygon graphics aren’t really my thing.

“Galaxy Intruders” for the Raroo Fun System.

Speaking of fixed shooters, I wish I had the money to import a Raroo Fun System and this game. The graphics are INSANE. Also, it has a Halloween-themed boss!

Another brief but rad clip posted on Flipnote Hatena for you to watch in amazement: Tiny on a skateboard (again)! Set the animation to loop for maximum enjoyment.

“DSi Vs Game Boy” by Bryzel. While I disagree that owning an old Game Boy is cause for tears, this is kind of funny. Plus, this is likely the first and only (for now) Flipnote animation with a cameo from Uncle Jesse. Have mercy!

Oh, and I forgot to mention it last week, but commentor Cameron Mc posted a short and cute clip of Tiny riding a skateboard. I love our readers!

Flipnote Hatena’s rad comment system

Hatena is doing a spectacular job with providing a global community for Flipnote Studio animators, not just by allowing visitors to watch and rate clips from every region, but by also implementing a convenient Google Translate button for typed messages posted through the site.

Just like any machine translator, the results are far from 100 percent perfect, but it’s better than opening a separate Google Translate window to copy and paste the text.

This feature isn’t compatible with drawn comments left by people watching animations through their DSi, but that’s a trade-off I can live with for two reasons:

  1. Being able to browse and comment on animations through your DSi is neat and convenient
  2. You can leave much more creative messages, like sketches with a short message

Which reminds me, Western users need to step their Flipnote commenting game up. I see adorable notes like the one above from Japanese commentors all the time, but most of the messages I see from U.S. users look hella sloppy, like they were left by 9-year-olds:

Flipnote Studio tips, PDF manual →

If you’re enjoying Flipnote Studio’s rudimentary toolset for creating your own animations but are having trouble overcoming artistic obstacles with those limitations, you should check out this channel of tricks for the app.

All of the videos so far have Japanese text, but they’re useful visual guides for essential things like getting as much color as possible out of the software’s paltry palette, or making a simple box with straight lines:

If you’re having trouble just uploading your first animation to Flipnote Hatena, there’s already an app a user-made animation for that — and it’s in English, too!

Also, here’s a downloadable PDF version of Flipnote Studio’s manual, so you can have a quick reference to pull up when you need to learn a particular technique while working on your creation.
